Overexposure to welding fume constituents, particularly manganese, is of concern in the construction industry due to the prevalence of welding and the scarcity of engineering controls. The control effectiveness of a commercially available portable local exhaust ventilation (LEV) unit was assessed. It consisted of a portable vacuum and a small bell-shaped hood connected by a flexible 2 inch (50.8 mm) diameter hose, in both experimental and field settings. The experimental testing was done in a semienclosed booth at a pipefitter training facility. Five paired trials of LEV control vs. no control

This paper presents an integrated open-source platform for resistance welding of thermoplastic composites, developed as a low-cost, self-contained alternative to expensive industrial welding stations. The system combines automated pressure control, real-time instrumentation, and automated data logging within a modular hardware architecture consisting of an aluminum frame and an electrically insulating wooden base that minimizes current leakage, complemented during operation by external ceramic insulator plates, not a permanent component of the equipment, positioned at the sample-electrode inte

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Cranial nerve transection during head and neck surgery is conventionally repaired by microsuture reanastomosis. Laser nerve welding (LNW), using CO2 laser to spot-weld the epineurium of transected nerve endings, has been shown in animal models to be a novel alternative to microsuture repair. This method avoids needle/suture material and minimizes instrumentation of the nerve. We hypothesized that potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP) laser would be superior to CO2 laser in repairing transected nerves. Using a rat posterior tibial nerve injury model, we compared CO2 laser, KT

Many toxic substances including heavy metals, ozone, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen oxides are generated during welding. Ozone (O(3)) is a strong oxidant that generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) in tissue, and ambient ROS exposure associated with particles has been determined to cause DNA damage. Ozone is produced within 30 seconds during welding. However, the length of time that O(3) remains in the air after welding is completed (post-welding) is unknown. The current study aimed to assess the distributions of ambient ROS and O(3) before the start of welding (pre-welding), d

It is estimated that more than 1 million workers worldwide perform some type of welding as part of their work duties. Epidemiology studies have shown that a large number of welders experience some type of respiratory illness. Respiratory effects seen in full-time welders have included bronchitis, siderosis, asthma, and a possible increase in the incidence of lung cancer. Pulmonary infections are increased in terms of severity, duration, and frequency among welders. Inhalation exposure to welding fumes may vary due to differences in the materials used and methods employed. The chemical properti

BACKGROUND: Phototoxic maculopathy most likely results from longer exposure to light from sources such as the sun, welding arcs, tungsten halogen lamp filaments or operation microscopes. The value of the multifocal ERG for the evaluation of functional defects in this rare entity has not been described to date.
CASES: We describe the case of a 38-year-old male patient who presented to his local ophthalmologist with bilateral loss of vision and acute ocular pain after having worked for two hours at an electric welding arc. A foveal lesion was found in both eyes, resulting in a bilateral reducti

Fumes generated from mild steel and stainless steel welding were collected on paper filters and tested in the BHK and SHE cell transformation assays. Fumes from the manual metal arc welding of stainless steel (MMA/SS) had a toxic and transforming effect attributable to their Cr(VI) content. The fumes from metal inert gas stainless steel (MIG/SS) welding also had a toxic effect but this was 2-3 times greater than that expected from their soluble Cr(VI) content based on the activity of soluble Cr(VI) from pure chromium compounds. When collected in an impinger, the fumes from MIG/SS were found to

Damage to the middle ear (ME) caused by penetrating welding sparks can lead to a variety of adverse outcomes. An exhaustive review of the literature is lacking, particularly with regard to clinical presentation, diagnostic-therapeutic work-up, and outcomes. Here we describe the clinical details of an injury caused by the largest welding foreign body ever reported in the ME. In addition, we present a comprehensive review of the relevant literature.

Welding is a process during which fumes, gases, electromagnetic radiation and noise are emitted as by-products. Metal oxide particles are particularly hazardous components of welding fumes. Welding has been found to be associated with respiratory symptoms and our objective in the present study was to study the effects of welding on pulmonary function and serum oxidant-antioxidant status. Fifty-one welding workers and 31 control subjects were recruited. Face to face interviews were conducted using the respiratory illness questionnaire adapted from the American Thoracic Society with the addition

The topical application of wavelength-specific dye and fibrinogen has been used to enhance laser closure of vascular anastomoses. We compared the closure of skin incisions by two different dye-enhanced, fibrinogen-based laser welding systems [argon laser (power density 4.78 W/cm2) with fluorescein isothiocyanate dye (n = 32) and diode laser (power density 9.55 W/cm2) with indocyanine green dye (n = 32)] with closure by interrupted 5-0 nylon suture (n = 64) and examined tensile strength, hydroxyproline production, histology, and cosmesis. Two 3-cm full-thickness incisions were made on the shave

Sixteen welders, welding under typical New Zealand conditions, had ambient air within their welding helmets sampled and analysed for ozone, nitrogen oxides, fluoride, carbon monoxide, aluminium, chromium, iron, nickel, zinc and total dust. Postshift urinary metals were also analysed, and a respiratory questionnaire completed for each welder. Levels above the New Zealand Workplace Exposure Standard (WES) were found for nitrogen dioxide in four welders (two TIG, one MMA and one plasma cutter), and for total chromium in one plasma cutter, who also had a nickel level of 24% of the WES. Dust levels

Residual stress is an inherent consequence of the welding process and can significantly compromise the structural integrity of welded components. To clarify the high-temperature creep damage evolution of the 600 MPa-grade ship hull structural steel base metal, high-temperature creep tests were conducted, aiming to improve the understanding of its deformation behavior and to support reliable numerical predictions. The experimentally calibrated creep constitutive model was subsequently integrated into finite element simulations to analyze the residual stress evolution in welded joints and to qua

Fatigue cracking of rib-to-deck conventional single-sided welded joints is a prevalent issue in orthotropic steel decks (OSDs), significantly impacting their structural integrity and durability. Rib-to-deck innovative double-sided welded joints have the potential to enhance the fatigue resistance of OSD. However, Welding Residual Stresses (WRS) significantly influence the fatigue life of these joints, mandating its consideration in fatigue assessments. This study introduces a novel approach for assessing the fatigue reliability of rib-to-deck double-sided welded joints in OSDs, accounting for
