Five calves, seven to nine months of age, were put on pasture in the target area of a shooting range in early May. Acute lead poisoning occurred in one of the calves after five days of grazing, the remainder became ill one to three days later. A cattle herd from the experimental farm of INRA in Nouzilly has been treated for hypodermosis since October 1990. Additionally, a regional eradication scheme has been implemented in this area since autumn 1992. Bi-monthly warble counts were performed between March and July each year on an average of 200 animals. The eyes of clinically healthy Simmentaler cattle and those affected by ophthalmia were sampled once a month over a continuous period of 12 months for bacterial, mycoplasmal and ureaplasmal infections. Lying down and other behavioural activities of dairy cows were studied for three 24-hour periods in a straw yard. The cows spent a total of 13.6 hours in the straw yard and lay down for 9.7 hours. Echocardiography was valuable in identifying tumorous growth in the cardiac tissues of a bull with enzootic bovine leukosis. The tumor was discernable as a thickening of the interatrial septum and wall of the right atrium, accompanied by an immobile pedunculated mass that originated from the interatrial septum and extended into the lumen of the right atrium. The mass did not interfere with right atrioventricular valve function. The pedunculated mass and thick portion of the atrial wall had a similar echogenic appearance; both were hypoechoic, when compared with the wall of the right ventricle.

We present the MERISE method for the design of an information system, detailing data modelling. An exploratory research program on peri-partum pathology in intensive dairy herds is used as an example. The information system is divided into thematic subsystems called 'fields', which are represented by a global conceptual scheme. For each field, a detailed conceptual model is then determined through precise modelling guidelines. This division facilitates the validation of models by the partners of the project, and makes it possible to re-use the fields in other research programs.

Three calves vaccinated with the Australian Ka strain of Babesia bovis were fully protected against experimental infection with an isolate from a farm on which four of 210 vaccinated cattle had died from B bovis infection. A degree of cross protection against the isolate was demonstrated in one calf which had been infected previously with Babesia bigemina.

For obtaining the preliminary data on the pathogenesis of sudden death in calves naturally heavily infected with Strongyloides papillosus, we monitored 8 Holstein calves experimentally infected with the larvae on electrocardiographic and pneumographic changes. It has been established that data of acid-base balance in cows' and newborn calves' blood closely correlate with physiological status of animals during their initial days of postnatal ontogenesis and depend on the peculiarities of metabolism in fetus and newborn organisms. Data on the acid-base balance in blood of newborn calves under diarrhea syndrome are discussed from the point of view of the influence of rehydration therapy and "Namacit" preparation on clinical status of animals.

Four hundred and eighty bovine kidneys were collected from an abattoir near Harare between December 1987 and November 1988, and leptospires were recovered from 50 (10.4 per cent) of them. The isolates were identified to serogroup level by the microscopic agglutination test; 32 belonged to serogroup Sejroe, seven were Pyogenes, four Hebdomadis, two Tarassovi, and one isolate each belonged to serogroups Australis, Bataviae, Grippotyphosa, Icterohaemorrhagiae and Pomona.

In this study, we have determined whether immunization with hypodermin A (HA), associated with various adjuvants, could provide protective immunity for calves when challenged with a natural hypoderma infestation. Eighty-one cows with ovarian cysts were treated with one group receiving 1500 IU HCG/150 mg progesterone and the other group receiving 5000 IU HCG/300 mg progesterone.
