Metabolic acidosis is commonly found in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), and its causes are: impaired ammonia excretion, reduced tubular bicarbonate reabsorption and insufficient renal bicarbonate production in relation to the amount of acids synthesised by the body and ingested with food. As the consequence, numerous metabolic abnormalities develop, which may lead to dysfunction of several organs. In observational studies, it has been found that CKD patients with metabolic acidosis are characterised by faster progression of kidney disease towards end stage kidney failure, and by in

Human activities have increased the global circulation of mercury, a potent neurotoxin. Mercury can be converted into methylmercury, which biomagnifies along aquatic food chains and leads to high exposure in fish-eating populations. Here we quantify temporal trends in the ocean-to-land transport of total mercury and methylmercury from fisheries and we estimate potential human mercury intake through fish consumption in 175 countries. Mercury export from the ocean increased over time as a function of fishing pressure, especially on upper-trophic-level organisms. In 2014, over 13 metric tonnes of

Fishes are the first group of vertebrates that respond when the environment is contaminated with pollutants resulted from anthropogenic activities. The development of the toxicity tests is bringing new evidence about the toxicological effects of the pollutants upon the life forms. Behavioural abnormalities in the swimming performance and cognitive processes were well associated with the response of organisms to pollutants from environment. The aim of the paper was to study the behavioural changes of zebrafish (memory, swimming performances and aggression) and oxidative stress (superoxide dismu

Potato is the most economically important non-cereal food crop. Tuber formation in potato is regulated by phytohormones, cytokinins (CKs) in particular. The present work studied CK signal perception in potato. The sequenced potato genome of doubled monoploid Phureja was used for bioinformatic analysis and as a tool for identification of putative CK receptors from autotetraploid potato cv. Désirée. All basic elements of multistep phosphorelay required for CK signal transduction were identified in the Phureja genome, including three genes orthologous to three CK receptor genes (AHK 2-4) of Arabi

The oral ingestion of ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) has attracted considerable attention because of the wide usage in food packaging and additives. The small intestine is the major absorption site for ZnO NPs. Unfortunately, studies on the absorption of ZnO NPs in the GIT were still scarce. This study evaluated the absorption characteristics of ZnO NPs (30 nm) and bulk ZnO (rod morphology with a mean size of 139-846 nm). Results showed that ZnO NPs and bulk ZnO were absorbed and redistributed in various organs of mice at 4 h after exposure. Significantly higher levels of MT1 were observed in the duo

The release of pollutants, especially heavy metals, into the aquatic environment is known to have detrimental effects on such an environment and on living organisms including humans when those pollutants are allowed to enter the food chain. The aim of this study is to analyse the damage to Clarias gariepinus' liver caused by exposure to different concentrations of copper. In the present study, samples of C. gariepinus were exposed to sub-lethal copper sulphate (CuSO4) concentrations (from 0.2 to 20.0 mg/L) for 96 h. Physiological and behavioural alterations were observed with respect to their

Cysticercosis is caused by the larval form of Taenia solium tape worm, cysticercus cellulose. The life cycle of T. solium consists of 2 host, the definite host is a man who harbours the adult forms of the worm in the intestine, while the intermediate host is the pig, where the larval form (cysticercus cellulose) is found in the skeletal muscle. Cysticercosis develops when human beings incidentally become the intermediate host and the eggs mature within their small intestine. The route of entry of the eggs into the human intestine may occur through autoinfection or by ingestion of contaminated

There is some statistical evidence indicating that Somali refugees and immigrants have high rates of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Somalis in North America call autism the "Western disease" because there is no word for autism in the Somali language and because many believe it does not exist in Somalia. In Toronto, Somali parents have forged an "epistemic community," united around a coherent theory of the development of autism, its defining features, and most successful therapies. They work together with researchers to support the theory that gut bacteria is a causal factor for the developmen

Polysaccharides are the main components of mushroom Inonotus obliquus (I. obliquus) with antihyperglycemic activities. This study was aimed to investigate the anti-diabetic effects and the potential mechanism of I. obliquus polysaccharides (IOPS) in high fat diet and STZ-induced type 2 diabetic mice. Results showed that oral administration of IOPS (900mg/kg) could significantly restore the body and fat mass weight, reduce fasting blood glucose levels, improve glucose tolerance ability, increase hepatic glycogen level and ameliorate insulin resistance compared to those of the control diabetic m

Tenofovir alafenamide is a new oral prodrug of tenofovir resulting in relatively low plasma levels and rapid uptake into peripheral blood mononuclear cells in its active form. The United States Food and Drug Administration has now approved this drug coformulated with elvitegravir/cobicistat/emtricitabine, rilpivirine/emtricitabine and emtricitabine. United States guidelines now list this formulation as one of the preferred components of a variety of antiretroviral regimens, and is included as an alternative in other international guidelines, with the notable exception of the World Health Organ

Cronobacter sakazakii has been implicated in causing serious infections in neonates due to consumption of contaminated infant powdered milk. The zoonotic potential of the organism was not clear due to scarce evidence about the role of food animals in the transmission of infection. C. sakazakii was identified in infant powdered milk (n = 100), infant stool (n = 100), and dairy animal feces (n = 100) with the percentages of 1%, 2%, and 4%, respectively. The outer membrane protein A (ompA) gene was characterized in all isolates of different origin, while gene encoding for zinc-metaloprotease (zpx

In oral cancer, loss of function due to surgery can be unacceptable, designating the tumour as functionally inoperable. Other curative treatments can then be considered. Currently, predictions of these functional consequences are subjective and unreliable. We want to create patient-specific models to improve and objectify these predictions. A first step was taken by controlling a 3D lip model with volunteer-specific sEMG activities. We focus on the lips first, because they are essential for speech, oral food transport, and facial mimicry. Besides, they are more accessible to measurements than

Wildlife can be exposed to human pharmaceuticals via prey that have accumulated the compounds from wastewater, surface water, sediment, and soil. One factor affecting internal absorption of pharmaceuticals is bioaccessibility, the proportion of the compound that enters solution in the gastrointestinal tract. Currently, the bioaccessibility of most pharmaceuticals in prey remains unknown for most wildlife species. The authors evaluated the potential of a 2-compartment in vitro gastrointestinal tract model to compare the bioaccessibility of the antidepressant fluoxetine from invertebrate prey fo

BACKGROUND: An outbreak of sudden death of pregnant farmed mink in Finland occurred during the busiest whelping period in the spring of 2013. The affected farms were all located in western Finland in a rather narrow geographic area, Ostrobothnia. Dead mink from 22 farms were submitted for laboratory diagnostics to the Finnish Food Safety Authority (Evira). The carcasses were necropsied and tissue specimens were prepared for histology. Samples of internal organs and peritoneal fluid were cultured bacteriologically.
RESULTS: Major pathological findings included hemorrhagic vaginal discharge, se

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Sarcoidosis is a chronic granulomatous disease typically affecting the lung, lymph nodes, and other organ systems. Evidence suggests that the morbidity and mortality rates for sarcoidosis in the USA are rising, despite widespread use of anti-inflammatory therapies. In this review, we survey new therapies that target specific inflammatory pathways in other diseases (such as rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn's disease, and psoriasis) that are similar to pathways relevant to sarcoidosis immunopathogenesis, and therefore, represent potentially new sarcoidosis therapies.

Prebiotics are non-digestible food ingredients (oligosaccharides) that reach the colon and are used as substrate by microorganisms producing energy, metabolites and micronutrients used for the host; in addition they also stimulate the selective growth of certain beneficial species (mainly bifidobacteria and lactobacilli) in the intestinal microbiota. In this article, a multidisciplinary approach to understand the concept of prebiotic carbohydrates, their properties and beneficial effects in humans has been carried out. Definitions of prebiotics, reported by relevant international organizations
