Radiological evaluation of bone status in the jaw and in the vertebral column in a group of women.

Vertebral bone mineral content was determined in a group of 56 women, ages 30-62. These measurements were compared with the status of supporting bone in the jaws (alveolar, molar and bicuspid) and with gingival health. There was a significant decline in vertebral bone mineral content from the pre- to post-menopausal group. Molar and bicuspid measurements were highly correlated. There was some association between lumbar bone mineral content and molar bone status for postmenopausal women. For postmenopausal women, the cases of greatest percent bone loss in alveolar crest were associated with low

Histopathologic study of squamous cell carcinoma of the gingiva in edentulous and dentulous jaws of hamsters treated with N-methylnitrosourea.

Unilateral maxillary or mandibular molars were extracted from twenty-four, 25-day-old male syrian golden hamsters; 25 days after extraction, 20 received MNU intragastrically twice a week for 3 months. All animals were killed 1 month later. High degrees and incidence of invasion of gingival SCC were observed in dentulous jaws without functional occlusion, followed by dentulous jaws with functional occlusion and edentulous jaws. Invasion of carcinomas with extensive bone destruction was observed commonly in the gingiva of dentulous maxillary jaws without functional occlusion, but was scarcely ob

Longitudinal evaluation of durapatite ceramic as an alloplastic implant in periodontal osseous defects after 3 years.

Seven patients who participated in a clinical study comparing the response of periodontal osseous defects to either grafting with Durapatite ceramic or debridement alone were followed under an active maintenance program for 3 years. Comparison of mean values showed that gingival recession, attachment levels and probeable pocket depths remained essentially stable for Durapatite sites over the 3 years. Attachment levels for debridement sites also remained constant, but these areas showed significant coronal migration of the free gingival margin and increases in probeable pocket depths. These lat

[Periodontal status in a group of Swiss soldiers age 28-32 years].

139 soldiers aged 28-32 years of a medical corps unit of the Swiss army were examined for their periodontal conditions. On 3 surfaces of all teeth, plaque deposits were assessed according to the Plaque Index System (Silness and Löe, 1964) and gingival health determined according to the Gingival Index System (Löe and Silness, 1963). Calculus deposits were evaluated on the 6 representative teeth of Ramfjord (1959). On 4 surfaces of the same teeth, pocket depths and loss of attachment were measured. The mean P1I was 1.38, the mean GI 1.11. The mean pocket depth was 2.52, and the mean loss of atta

Modified Technique of Gummy Smile Treatment: Double M-V Plasty for Esthetic and Functional Lip Reposition Surgery.

Excessive gingival display is a common problem that results in an unaesthetic appearance while smiling. Lip reposition surgery is a powerful, noninvasive surgery approach for gummy smile treatment, frequently performed in outpatient oral and maxillofacial surgery units. The procedure as such, provides camouflage of the increased gingival display through re-attachment of the upper lip and limits the pull effect of the muscles by reducing the depth of the upper vestibule. Few techniques of surgical treatment of maxillary gingiva overexposure have been described so far. Proposed midline double V-

Changes in Periodontal Parameters and Microbiome Composition of Periodontal Pocket in Patients with Chronic Inflammatory Diseases Receiving Targeted Anti-Cytokine Therapy.

Periodontitis is associated with systemic chronic inflammatory diseases. There is limited evidence on the influence of anti-cytokine therapies on the periodontal condition and microbiome in the tooth pocket of such patients, so the aim of this study was to elucidate this issue. In this observational trial, the periodontal status and the gingival crevicular fluid of 13 patients with different chronic inflammatory diseases were obtained before the initiation of anti-cytokine treatment and 14 weeks after. Gingival crevicular fluid was collected for 16S rRNA gene sequencing from a clinically healt

Slow maxillary expansion in adult patient with Hyrax expander: A case report.

Slow maxillary expansion is a technique used to achieve correction of maxillary transverse deficiency or posterior crossbite in patients where the midpalatal suture has closed. This is mostly achieved by buccal tipping of maxillary posterior teeth. The aim of this case report is to discuss the orthodontic treatment of a 20-year-old patient with bilateral posterior crossbite. The patient had moderate maxillary crowding and severe mandibular crowding, crossbites bilaterally on his posterior teeth, and maxillary lateral incisors. The patient had thin gingival biotype with gingival recession on th

Gingiva as the primary site of extrapulmonary tuberculosis: A rare case report with brief review of literature.

Multiple strains of Mycobacteria cause tuberculosis (TB), a chronic, specific infectious granulomatous disease. It mainly occurs with pulmonary involvement when compared to extrapulmonary involvement. Primary oral occurrence is uncommon and oral lesions are usually secondary to pulmonary involvement. When there are no active pulmonary clinical manifestations of TB, the diagnosis of the very rare entity of primary gingival TB poses a great challenge to clinicians. In this case report, we discuss a case of primary gingival TB in a 24-year-old lactating mother. This article briefs the onset and c

Management of an extensive soft tissue deficiency prior to immediate implant in the aesthetic zone: a 4-year follow-up.

Soft tissue deficiency in a tooth extraction site in the aesthetic area is a common and challenging clinical situation. This case report demonstrates the successful treatment of extensive gingival recession and buccal bone dehiscence associated with a hopeless tooth. Initially, a connective tissue graft was used to cover the root and thicken the soft tissue. After 2 months, the tooth was extracted, an implant was immediately placed, and a temporary restoration was installed. After 3 months, the soft tissue exhibited a natural and harmonious architecture. A custom zirconia abutment and crown we

Trigeminal Herpes Zoster With Mucosal Involvement in a Patient on Prophylactic Valacyclovir: An Uncommon Presentation.

This case report details a unique presentation of trigeminal herpes zoster with mucosal involvement in a 72-year-old female undergoing prophylactic valacyclovir treatment for suspected herpes labialis. The patient initially presented for a routine skin examination. Despite the absence of clinical evidence of herpes labialis, she was prescribed prophylactic valacyclovir. Three days later, the patient developed a unilateral rash, gingival darkening, and severe ipsilateral tooth pain. An examination revealed a crusted erythematous rash along the mandibular division of the left trigeminal nerve an

Soft Tissue Grafting Procedures before Restorations in the Esthetic Zone: A Minimally Invasive Interdisciplinary Case Report.

An esthetically pleasing smile is a valuable aspect of physical appearance and plays a significant role in social interaction. Achieving the perfect balance between extraoral and intraoral tissues is essential for a harmonious and attractive smile. However, certain intraoral deficiencies, such as non-carious cervical lesions and gingival recession, can severely compromise the overall aesthetics, particularly in the anterior zone. Addressing such conditions requires careful planning and meticulous execution of both surgical and restorative procedures. This interdisciplinary clinical report pres

Concurrent Perioperative Diagnosis of HIV in a Patient With Plunging Ranula: A Case Report.

Oral manifestations may be the earliest indicators of HIV infection as it has strong association with oral candidiasis, hairy leukoplakia, linear gingival erythema, necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis, necrotizing ulcerative periodontitis, Kaposi sarcoma, and lymphoma. Other conditions such as diffuse infiltrative lymphocytosis syndrome, benign lymphoepithelial cyst, and salivary gland neoplasm have also been reported in HIV patients. Ranulas are caused by salivary leakage from the sublingual gland as a result of ductal obstruction or trauma. At the present time, there is no clear evidence of a

Impact of Oral Mesenchymal Stem Cells Applications as a Promising Therapeutic Target in the Therapy of Periodontal Disease.

Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory condition affecting about 20-50% of people, worldwide, and manifesting clinically through the detection of gingival inflammation, clinical attachment loss, radiographically assessed resorption of alveolar bone, gingival bleeding upon probing, teeth mobility and their potential loss at advanced stages. It is characterized by a multifactorial etiology, including an imbalance of the oral microbiota, mechanical stress and systemic diseases such as diabetes mellitus. The current standard treatments for periodontitis include eliminating the microbial pat

The coronally advanced flap technique revisited: Treatment of peri-implant soft tissue dehiscences.

The coronally advanced flap technique is one of the most commonly used approaches for treating gingival recession. Several modifications of the technique have been proposed over the years, making it a highly predictable treatment option for gingival recession; however, as dental implants are structurally and biologically different from natural teeth, a further modification of the conventional coronally advanced flap technique has been suggested to overcome the challenges posed by the treatment of peri-implant soft tissue dehiscences. The present article aims to describe the state of the art of

How Oral Specialists Can Help Diagnose and Manage Extra-Digestive Inflammatory Bowel Disease Complications.

Identification of extra-digestive manifestations of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is essential. The oral cavity is a preferential site in which gingival enlargement may be one of these manifestations. We present, in this article, two original cases and a concept map that highlights the need for a close collaboration between the dental surgeon or oral specialist, the dermatologist, and the gastroenterologist. In the first case, the strictly local management of a systemic IBD oral complication, can relieve and answer the patient's complaint without modifying or disrupting the systemic treatme

Novel Surgical Approach for Root Coverage Using Coronally Advanced Flap in Conjunction With Transposition of Periosteal Pedicle Graft.

INTRODUCTION: Gingival recession is a complex phenomenon with multifactorial etiology. It is defined as the apical migration of the soft tissue margin beyond the cemento-enamel junction, thereby exposing the root surface. It results in the destruction of both soft and hard tissues. CASE PRESENTATION: Three patients with buccal gingival recession defects underwent surgical treatment consisting of transposition of a periosteal pedicle in conjunction with the coronally advanced flap (CAF) technique. As the cambium layer of the periosteum has greater osteoblastic potential than the fibrous layer,
