Nutritional assessment and lifestyle counseling for pregnant women in primary health care units in Mexico: implementation evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Maternal malnutrition, expressed as both undernutrition and excessive gestational weight gain, remains a major public health challenge in Mexico. Primary health care units are the main platform for the provision of evidence-based nutritional interventions, including nutritional status assessment and counseling on healthy eating and physical activity. However, there is limited knowledge about their systematic implementation in routine prenatal care. This study aimed to evaluate the implementation of these interventions in primary health care units in Morelos, Mexico, focusing on key

Measurement Properties of an Electronic Patient-Reported Outcome Measure for Patients with Non-Dialysis-Dependent CKD.

KEY POINTS: The Kidney Disease Symptom Survey demonstrated temporal stability in patients with stable CKD. Kidney Disease Symptom Survey measurements of general health and depressive symptoms converged with responses to Medicare Annual Wellness Visit questionnaires. Kidney Disease Symptom Survey responsiveness, with detection of a meaningful difference in scores, was seen in approximately 40% of patients with worsening kidney function. BACKGROUND: Patients with non-dialysis-dependent CKD (NDD-CKD) develop progressive symptoms which affect quality of life. We distributed the Kidney Disease Sym

Green space and early childhood development: a systematic review.

Background The urban environment presents significant health challenges for children, such as discouraging physical exercise and increasing exposure to air pollution, excessive noise and higher temperatures. Reducing exposures to these negative environmental factors can have great benefits on a child's well-being and lower their risk of developing chronic diseases later in life. There is increasing evidence that suggests that the presence of urban green space can offer benefits to human health and well-being. While studies have reported the impact green space exposure has on the individual hea

Community-partnered cluster-randomized comparative effectiveness trial of community engagement and planning or resources for services to address depression disparities.

BACKGROUND: Depression contributes to disability and there are ethnic/racial disparities in access and outcomes of care. Quality improvement (QI) programs for depression in primary care improve outcomes relative to usual care, but health, social and other community-based service sectors also support clients in under-resourced communities. Little is known about effects on client outcomes of strategies to implement depression QI across diverse sectors. OBJECTIVE: To compare the effectiveness of Community Engagement and Planning (CEP) and Resources for Services (RS) to implement depression QI on

Lost in Transition: Health Care Experiences of Adults Born Very Preterm-A Qualitative Approach.

Introduction: Adults Born Very Preterm (ABP) are an underperceived but steadily increasing patient population. It has been shown that they face multiple physical, mental and emotional health problems as they age. Very little is known about their specific health care needs beyond childhood and adolescence. This article focuses on their personal perspectives: it explores how they feel embedded in established health care structures and points to health care-related barriers they face. Methods: We conducted 20 individual in-depth interviews with adults born preterm aged 20-54 years with a gestatio

A multivariate analysis of factors associated with depression: evaluating the role of health literacy as a potential contributor.

BACKGROUND: High rates of low health literacy among elderly populations along with a high prevalence of chronic conditions may lead to increased levels of depression symptomatology. We sought to determine whether older adults with inadequate health literacy were more likely to report depressive symptoms and whether health literacy was an independent predictor of depression symptomatology. METHODS: A total of 3260 new Medicare enrollees 65 years or older were interviewed in person between June and December 1997 from 4 managed care plans (853 in Cleveland, Ohio, 498 in Houston, Tex, 975 in Sout

Unpacking the relationship between autism, sport participation, and adolescent health: A causal mediation analysis.

BACKGROUND: Autistic children are less likely to participate in sport than non-autistic children, and sport participation may improve health and health related quality of life. It is therefore possible that sport participation may partially mediate the association between autism and adolescent health and health related quality of life. Sport participation may have distinct effects for autistic and non-autistic children, and these effects may also differ between team and individual sports. OBJECTIVES: The study had two objectives. First, to estimate cumulative effects of sport participation (t

The longitudinal negative impact of early stressful events on emotional and physical well-being: The buffering role of cardiac vagal development.

Early stressful events negatively affect emotional and physical well-being. Cardiac vagal tone (CVT), which is associated with better emotional and physical well-being, usually gradually increase in early childhood. Nonetheless, children's CVT developmental trajectories are greatly variable, such that CVT can increase or decrease across the years. The present study examines the longitudinal effects of early stressful events and the role of 4 years CVT developmental trajectory on children's emotional and physical well-being. Forty-two 4-year-old children were enrolled. Number of stressful event

Self-reported physical activity in essential tremor: Relationship with tremor, balance, and cognitive function.

BACKGROUND: Physical inactivity may be the result of medical comorbidities. Inactivity itself may also lead to important health consequences, especially in older patients. Essential tremor (ET) patients may have a variety of physical and cognitive problems that could detrimentally impact on level of physical activity. Yet, to our knowledge, there have been no studies of physical activity in these patients. METHODS: Self-reported physical activity was assessed using the Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly (PASE) in 100 ET cases (mean age 80.5years) enrolled in a clinical study. Additional

Physical victimization, gender identity and suicide risk among transgender men and women.

We investigated whether being attacked physically due to one's gender identity or expression was associated with suicide risk among trans men and women living in Virginia. The sample consisted of 350 transgender men and women who participated in the Virginia Transgender Health Initiative Survey (THIS). Multivariate multinomial logistic regression was used to explore the competing outcomes associated with suicidal risk. Thirty-seven percent of trans men and women experienced at least one physical attack since the age of 13. On average, individuals experienced 3.97 (SD = 2.86) physical attacks;

A smartphone-assisted brief online cognitive-behavioral intervention for pregnant women with depression: a study protocol of a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy is strongly associated with increased risk for depression. Approximately 25% of pregnant women develop depression. Treatment for depression during pregnancy has several complexities: the use of psychiatric medications during pregnancy might result in developmental problems in the child and must be used with caution. Psychosocial interventions are effective, but they require specialized professionals. Low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) such as Brazil do not have enough mental health professionals needed to meet this demand. In this context, smartphone-based interventi

Strengthening primary care gatekeeping for healthy aging in China: family doctor contract service and multidimensional health outcomes among older adults.

OBJECTIVE: Expanding access to community-based primary care is central to addressing the health challenges posed by population aging in China. This study examines associations between Family Doctor Contract Service (FDCS) participation and multidimensional health outcomes among community-dwelling older adults. METHODS: Using nationally representative data from the 2023 China Longitudinal Aging Social Survey (N = 11,455), we assessed three health dimensions: self-rated health, physical discomfort, and life satisfaction. OLS regression provided a transparent baseline of adjusted associations, o

Intersectional discrimination and mental health in later life: ageism as a core dimension.

OBJECTIVES: Despite extensive literature that examines the relationship between discrimination and health, less is known about specific discrimination attributions and how they may differentially associate with health. To address this gap, the current study investigated the latent typology of discrimination attributions and the intersectional attributions' relationships with mental health in later life. METHODS: Data came from 6,282 respondents in the 2016 Psychosocial Leave-Behind Questionnaire of the Health and Retirement Study. Participants ascribed their everyday discrimination experience

Health and economic impact of caregiving on informal caregivers of people with chronic diseases in sub-Saharan Africa: A systematic review.

With a disproportionate burden of chronic diseases and severe shortage of health workers in sub-Saharan Africa, the region implicitly relies on informal caregivers (ICGs) to support the patients both within and outside the health facilities. The aim of this review is to systematically summarise evidence on the health and economic impact of caregiving on informal caregivers of patients with chronic diseases in sub-Saharan Africa. Medline (Ovid), CINAHL (EBSCOhost), PsycINFO (Ovid), Embase (Ovid), Global Health, and Web of Science databases were systematically searched to identify original artic

Direct and indirect barriers to hypothetical access to care among Canadian forces health services personnel.

BACKGROUND: Though research among Canadian Forces Health Services (CFHS) personnel is limited, the literature suggests formal healthcare is underused. Though much research has been conducted on particular barriers (e.g., stigma), examining a breadth of barriers could better inform behavioral interventions. Furthermore, work has yet to examine the indirect effects of barriers through their impact on intentions to access care. METHODS: CFHS participants were randomly assigned to complete either a mental health (N = 503) or physical health (N = 530) version of the survey. The survey included que

Major depressive disorder in post-secondary students attending foodbanks in France.

INTRODUCTION: Poor mental health among youth is a major public health issue that has risen to the forefront since the COVID-19 crisis, especially among post-secondary students and precarious populations. The objectives of this work were to evaluate the rate of major depressive disorder (MDD) among precarious post-secondary students in the greater Paris region, to describe its risk factors, and to identify determinants for not seeking care. METHODS: We conducted a multi-site, cross-sectional survey of post-secondary students attending a selection of 13 student foodbanks in the greater Paris re

Profiles of lifestyle health behaviors and cognitive decline in older adults.

INTRODUCTION: We aimed to identify profiles of modifiable, late-life lifestyle health behaviors related to subsequent maintenance of cognition and explore sociodemographics and health characteristics as effect modifiers. METHODS: Analyses used data from 715 older adults without baseline dementia from the Rush Memory and Aging Project and with lifestyle health behaviors (physical activity, cognitive activity, healthy diet, social activity) at baseline and ≥ 2 annual assessments of cognition. We used latent profile analysis to group participants based on behavior patterns and assessed change in

Evidence for the Effectiveness and Acceptability of e-SBI or e-SBIRT in the Management of Alcohol and Illicit Substance Use in Pregnant and Post-partum Women.

Alcohol and illicit psychoactive drug use during pregnancy have increased worldwide, putting women and their children's health and development at risk. Multiple drug use, comorbid psychiatric disorders, sexual and physical abuse are common in women who use alcohol and drugs during pregnancy. The effects on the mother include poor reproductive and life-long health, legal, family, and social problems. Additionally, the exposed child is at increased risk of long-term physical health, mental health, and developmental problems. The stigma associated with substance use during pregnancy and some clin

Combining mHealth and health-coaching for improving self-management in chronic care. A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Self-management approaches are widely used to improve chronic care. In this context, health care professionals call for efficient tools to engage patients in managing their illness. Mobile health (mHealth), defined by WHO as medical and public health practice supported by mobile devices, is demonstrated to enhance self-management and health-coaching as an engaging tool in supporting behaviour change. Nevertheless, it is unclear how health-coaching and mHealth can benefit from each other. OBJECTIVE: We conducted a scoping review to provide a literature-overview and identify any exi
