We aimed to evaluate sarcopenia and sarcopenic obesity (SO) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), possible relationships with serum irisin and myostatin levels, and the effect of glycemic control on SO.Ninety T2DM patients were included in this a cross-sectional study. Sarcopenia was determined by evaluating muscle mass (bioelectrical impedance analysis), muscle strength (HGS), and gait speed (GS). Patients with muscle mass loss with functionally reduced muscle strength and/or performance were considered sarcopenic. In addition, participants were divided into 3 groups according to

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) causes several systemic changes, including muscular homeostasis, and eventually results in muscle atrophy. CKD-induced muscle atrophy is highly prevalent, and exercise is well known to enhance muscle function in these cases, although the exact mechanism remains unclear. Here, we aim to assess whether the protective effect of aerobic exercise in 5/6 nephrectomized (CKD) mice is associated with mitochondrial dysfunction, autophagy, or inflammation. C57BL/6J mice were randomly allocated into 3 different experimental groups: Sham, CKD, and CKD+aerobic exercise (CKD+AE)

Brandner, CR, and Warmington, SA. Delayed onset muscle soreness and perceived exertion after blood flow restriction exercise. J Strength Cond Res 31(11): 3101-3108, 2017-The purpose of this study was to determine the perceptual responses to resistance exercise with heavy loads (80% 1 repetition maximum [1RM]), light loads (20% 1RM), or light loads in combination with blood flow restriction (BFR). Despite the use of light loads, it has been suggested that the adoption of BFR resistance exercise may be limited because of increases in delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) and perceived exertion. Mechanical unloading induces muscle atrophy and bone loss; however, the time course and interdependence of these effects is not well defined. We subjected 4-month-old C57BL/6J mice to hindlimb suspension (HLS) for 3 weeks, euthanizing 12 to 16 mice on day (D) 0, 7, 14, and 21. Lean mass was 7% to 9% lower for HLS versus control from D7-21. Absolute mass of the gastrocnemius (gastroc) decreased 8% by D7, and was maximally decreased 16% by D14 of HLS. mRNA levels of Atrogin-1 in the gastroc and quadriceps (quad) were increased 99% and 122%, respectively, at D7 of HLS. Similar increases in MuRF1

In the rehabilitation literature, fatigue is a common symptom of patients with any neurological impairment when defined as a subjective lack of physical and mental energy that interferes with usual activities. Some complaints may, however, arise from fatigability , an objective decline in strength as routine use of muscle groups proceeds. By this refined definition of fatigue, exercise or sustained use reduces the ability of muscles to produce force or power, regardless of whether the task can be sustained. Fatigability may be masked clinically because (1) the degree of weakening is not profou

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Resistance training is the cornerstone of sarcopenia management. However, whether combining it with amino acid-based supplementation, including essential amino acids, branched-chain amino acids, leucine, and derivatives such as HMB, provides additional benefits remains unclear.
METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials until February 2025. Meta- and subgroup analyses were performed using a random-effects model. The Cochrane ROB2 tool and GRADE framework were used to assess the risk of bi

This study examined the effects of weightlifting (WTG) and plyometric (PTG) training on ankle mobility, strength, power, and running performance in highly trained adolescent basketball players. Participants (male, n = 23; female, n = 35) were randomly assigned to WTG or PTG, training three times weekly for four weeks. Assessments included ankle dorsiflexion, hip strength (ABD-ADD ratio and asymmetry), handgrip strength, lower limb power (Counter Movement Jump -CMJ- and Broad Jump), and running performance. Both interventions significantly improved ankle dorsiflexion (left: p < .001, d = 1.10;

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Malnutrition may be a hidden but relevant health condition in individuals with obesity and osteoarthritis. The Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) consensus includes muscle mass as one of the key phenotypic criteria, potentially enhancing its ability to detect malnutrition in individuals with obesity. We comprehensively profiled the nutritional status of individuals with obesity and advanced knee osteoarthritis and explored associations with health outcomes.
METHODS: Data from the Prevention Of MusclE Loss in Osteoarthritis (POMELO) study was used, which inc

BACKGROUND: Hypoxic-ischemic (HI) insult in infants induces brain injury and results in motor coordination impairments associated with cerebral palsy; however, preventive measures for HI brain injury in preterm infants remain unclear. We investigated the impact of progesterone (P4) in a rat HI insult model that mimics HI brain injury in preterm infants.
METHODS: Neonatal male rats with their right common carotid artery coagulated were exposed to a 1-h hypoxia (6% oxygen) on postnatal day (PND) 3. P4 (0.2 mg) was subcutaneously administered daily from PND4-12. Motor coordination function and m

We aimed to analyse the longitudinal association between physical fitness (PF) and body composition (BC) with a metabolic risk score (Met4) in children and adolescents and to elucidate whether the association between PF and Met4 differs when using relativized or absolute fitness variables. A total of 188 children (86 females) and 195 adolescents (97 females) were included. Cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) was determined by the 20-m shuttle run test, and muscular fitness (MF) was determined by hand grip and standing long jump tests. Height and weight were measured, and the body mass index (Kg/m2

This study aimed to investigate the association between the development of dysphagia in patients with underlying sarcopenia and the prevalence of sarcopenic dysphagia in older patients following surgical treatment for hip fracture. Older female patients with hip fractures (n = 89) were studied. The data of skeletal muscle mass, hand-grip strength, and nutritional status were examined. The development of dysphagia postoperatively was graded using the Food Oral Intake Scale by a certified nurse in dysphagia nursing. The patients' mean age was 85.9 ± 6.5 years. The prevalence of sarcopenia was 76

BACKGROUND: Anatomical and functional differences between Asian and Caucasian populations have been described and are important in treatment of wrist pathology. The purpose of this study was to establish and compare normal values in an Asian and Caucasian population. We hypothesized that a normal Asian population will have greater wrist ROM and reduced grip- strength when compared to a normal Caucasian population.
METHODS: One hundred and-seventy-one normal Asian and 156 normal Caucasian wrists were evaluated. We excluded wrists with current or a history of wrist pathology including past surg

Scapular dyskinesis is quite frequent and can lead to shoulder pain. The diagnosis is essentially clinical. The main cause is muscle imbalance, between the trapezius, rhomboids, and pectoralis minor. In these cases, rehabilitation is the best treatment. We present a case of a young male patient with dyskinesis due to axonal involvement of the long thoracic nerve and paresis of the anterior serratus muscle. After a swimming program to increase muscular strength and imbalance, he experienced pain reduction and functional recovery of the upper limb, with reduction of the winged scapula.

Malnutrition may be an important complicating factor in acute and chronic lung disease. Animal studies have demonstrated significant atrophy of diaphragm muscle fibers following prolonged undernutrition resulting in a marked reduction in diaphragm muscle strength as well as alteration in other contractile and fatigue properties of the muscle. In severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), malnutrition is common and may, in conjunction with the influences of hyperinflation on diaphragm performance, predispose to respiratory muscle fatigue and failure. The course of progressive weight l
