Antioxidant enzyme status and lipid peroxidation in various tissues of diabetic and starved rats.

The effect of short term (2-wk) diabetes induced by streptozotocin and starvation (1-wk) on antioxidant enzymes and lipid peroxidation in the liver, kidney and heart of rats was investigated. The activity of mitochondrial oxidative markers was increased in diabetic liver and kidney, while the activity in tissues of starved rats tended to be decreased. Immunoreactive manganese superoxide dismutase was increased only in diabetic liver and was unchanged or decreased in the rest of the tissues. Glutathione peroxidase activity was increased in tissues of diabetic but not starved rats. The changes i

Larger Genomes Linked to Slower Development and Loss of Late-Developing Traits.

Genome size varies widely among organisms and is known to affect vertebrate development, morphology, and physiology. In amphibians, genome size is hypothesized to contribute to loss of late-forming structures, although this hypothesis has mainly been discussed in salamanders. Here we estimated genome size for 22 anuran species and combined this novel data set with existing genome size data for an additional 234 anuran species to determine whether larger genome size is associated with loss of a late-forming anuran sensory structure, the tympanic middle ear. We established that genome size is ne

Safe major hepatectomy in HCC patients with remnant-to-standard liver volume below 40% and preserved ICG clearance.

BACKGROUND: A future liver remnant (FLR) ≥40% is commonly recommended for major hepatectomy in patients with chronic liver disease; however, volumetry alone may not adequately reflect functional reserve. We evaluated whether FLR <40% increases posthepatectomy liver failure (PHLF) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). METHODS: This retrospective study included 269 consecutive patients who underwent major hepatectomy for HCC between October 2016 and December 2024. Patients were stratified into FLR <40% (n = 84) and FLR ≥40% (n = 185). Clinically relevant PHLF was defined as ISGLS grade B-C, and li

Association of an Aquaporin-4 Haplotype With Cognition, Brain Volume, and Dementia Risk in Community-Dwelling Individuals Without Dementia.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The aquaporin-4 (AQP4) water channel plays an integral role in clearing brain waste. However, little is known about whether variations in the AQP4 gene contributes to brain health or dementia risk. We aimed to determine whether a functional AQP4 haplotype was associated with cognition, brain volumes, or incident dementia. METHODS: This study included participants from 2 prospective cohort studies. First, participants from the original, offspring, new offspring spouse, and generation 3 cohorts from the Framingham Heart Study (FHS; enrolled 1948-2005) were included wi

Metal-organic cage-mediated synergistic tumor microenvironment remodeling and self-enhanced photodynamic therapy.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a promising non-invasive antitumor strategy, but its clinical efficacy is severely hampered by two critical bottlenecks: aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) of photosensitizers (PSs) and the hypoxic tumor microenvironment (TME). Herein, we rationally construct a multifunctional nanoplatform (PFD@FeZn@PEG) based on a porphyrin-derived metal-organic cage (MOC) for self-boosting synergistic PDT. The rigid framework of the FeZn MOC spatially isolates porphyrin monomers, efficiently suppressing π-π stacking and ACQ to retain robust singlet oxygen (1O2) generation capaci

Genomics of kidney volumes: one size does not fit all.

To characterize the genetic basis of chronic kidney disease, genome-wide association studies focused on chronic kidney disease-defining traits that were most readily measurable in large population samples. Today, convolutional neural network analysis of magnetic resonance imaging allows for accurate, large-scale kidney morphology assessment, enhancing research into chronic kidney disease determinants at population scale. Applying convolutional neural networks to UK Biobank data, Monteiro-Martins et al. generated genomic maps of kidney cortex, medulla, and sinus volumes, enabling more detailed

MRI-based cerebrospinal fluid volumetric indices for predicting tap test response in idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus.

Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) is a potentially reversible disorder; however, predicting symptom-specific improvement after cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) tap testing remains challenging. This exploratory study investigated whether MRI-derived CSF compartment volumes are differentially associated with gait and cognitive responses after tap testing. In this retrospective observational study, 50 patients with clinically diagnosed iNPH underwent 3.0-T MRI with 3D T1WI prior to tap testing. Third ventricle and bilateral choroid plexus volumes were quantified using automated FreeSurfer

PSA density for clinically significant prostate cancer detection: a retrospective cohort study on the influence of age and prostate volume.

PURPOSE: PSA density (PSAD) may improve detection of clinically significant prostate cancer (csPCa) by normalizing PSA for prostate volume. Current practice applies a uniform PSAD threshold of 0.15 ng/ml/cm³; however, whether this approach performs adequately across prostate volumes remains unclear. This study evaluated the diagnostic performance of PSAD for csPCa and investigated the influence of age and prostate volume on its accuracy. METHODS: A total of 3,923 MRI-guided biopsy sessions from 3,087 patients were retrospectively analyzed. PSAD was calculated from total PSA (ng/ml) and MRI-de

Acute and Subacute Toxicity Study of α-Arbutin: An In Vivo Evidence.

α-Arbutin, a glucoside of hydroquinone, is utilized as a skin-lightening agent that inhibits human tyrosinase activity. Although it exhibits antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, limited research exists on its toxicological effects. This research investigates the oral toxicity of α-arbutin in both acute and subacute settings using Sprague-Dawley rats as test subjects. Female Sprague-Dawley rats underwent acute oral toxicity testing in accordance with OECD TG 425 guidelines. The rats received oral doses of 175, 550, 1750, and 2000 mg/kg. Additionally, a subacute oral toxicity study foll

Development of a Pediatric Age-Based and Weight-Adjusted Nomogram for Bladder Volumes Associated With Successful Completion of Transabdominal Pelvic Ultrasound.

OBJECTIVE: To develop a nomogram for pediatric bladder volumes associated with the successful completion of transabdominal pelvic ultrasound (TPU) in female pediatric patients presenting with lower abdominal and/or pelvic pain in the emergency department. This study hypothesizes that the target bladder volumes for successful TPU vary by age and weight. METHODS: We retrospectively calculated bladder volumes on all successful transabdominal pelvic ultrasound studies during a 2-year period for patients 8 to 18 years old by ellipsoid bladder volume formula using the largest cross-sectional areas

Brain volumes discriminate clinical dementia rating scale categories.

Brain atrophy is well documented in various kinds of dementia, particularly in Alzheimer's disease. Here, we evaluated gray matter volume of 87 cortical and subcortical areas in 460 individuals characterized according to the Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR) as cognitively unimpaired (n = 352), undetermined (n = 72), or mild dementia (n = 36). We found a highly significant correspondence between increased dementia severity and reduced brain volume, particularly for the amygdala and temporal cortical areas, including the hippocampus, middle temporal gyrus, and inferior temporal gyrus. The negative

In vivo imaging markers of glymphatic dysfunction in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: Analysis of ALPS index and choroid plexus volume.

BACKGROUND: The glymphatic system, essential for brain waste clearance, has been implicated in neurodegenerative diseases, including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Emerging imaging markers, such as the analysis along the perivascular space (ALPS) index and choroid plexus volume (CPV), may provide insights into glymphatic function, but their relevance to ALS remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To assess glymphatic dysfunction in ALS patients using the ALPS index and CPV. METHODS: In this prospective single-center study, we analyzed 51 ALS patients and 51 age- and sex-matched healthy controls (H

Volumetric alterations of hippocampal and amygdala subfields in Azheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: Numerous studies have shown that patients with Azheimer's disease (AD) or amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) have atrophy in the hippocampus and amygdala. However, there are few MRI studies that have jointly analyzed the volumes of the 19 hippocampal subfields and the 9 amygdala subfields. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we used the method of analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) to analyze the volume differences of hippocampal and amygdala subfields among three groups of 40 normal control (NC), 40 aMCI and 53 AD, and conducted correlation analysis between t

Correlation of electrocardiographic and echocardiographic parameters in assessing left atrial dysfunction.

BACKGROUND: Electrocardiographic (ECG) indices, such as the morphology-voltage-P-wave (MVP) score, and echocardiographic parameters like left atrial volume index (LAVi), left atrial reservoir strain (LASr), and left atrial appendage (LAA) emptying velocity (LAAev) are associated with atrial fibrillation (AF) risk. However, the relationships between these markers remain incompletely understood. AIMS: This study aimed to investigate correlations between the ECG MVP score and echocardiographic indices of LA size and function. METHODS: In this prospective study, 60 patients in sinus rhythm, incl
