A Study on Serum Lactate Dehydrogenase and Uric Acid in Preeclampsia and Eclampsia: Can they Predict Adverse Fetomaternal Outcome?

BACKGROUND: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy affect 3%-5% of all pregnancies, contributing immensely to maternal morbidity and mortality. According to the WHO, the incidence of deaths due to preeclampsia and eclampsia in developing and developed countries is 2.8% and 0.4%, respectively. Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and uric acid are good predictors of disease severity. AIM: This study aims to determine the fetomaternal outcome in relation to abnormal serum levels of LDH and uric acid. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out in 1200 patients with preeclampsia and ecla

Longer duration of gestation in term singletons is associated with better infant neurodevelopment.

BACKGROUND: Longer gestation at term and post-term age is associated with increased perinatal mortality. Nonetheless, recent neuroimaging studies indicated that longer gestation is also associated with better functioning of the child's brain. AIMS: to assess whether longer gestation in term and post-term (in short: term) singletons is associated with better infant neurodevelopment. STUDY DESIGN: cross-sectional observational study. SUBJECTS: Participants were all singleton term infants (n = 1563) aged 2-18 months of the IMP-SINDA project that collected normative data for the Infant Motor Pr

FUNDC1-mediated mitophagy triggered by mitochondrial ROS is partially involved in 1-nitropyrene-evoked placental progesterone synthesis inhibition and intrauterine growth retardation in mice.

Intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) is a major cause of perinatal morbidity and mortality. Previous studies showed that 1-nitropyrene (1-NP), an atmospheric pollutant, induces placental dysfunction and IUGR, but the exact mechanisms remain uncertain. In this research, we aimed to explore the role of mitophagy on 1-NP-evoked placental progesterone (P4) synthesis inhibition and IUGR in a mouse model. As expected, P4 levels were decreased in 1-NP-exposed mouse placentas and maternal sera. Progesterone synthases, CYP11A1 and 3βHSD1, were correspondingly declined in 1-NP-exposed mouse placentas

Transplacental non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs versus expectant management in fetal Ebstein anomaly with circular shunt: Systematic review and meta-analysis.

Ebstein anomaly (EA) is a rare congenital cardiac malformation associated with high perinatal mortality. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we aimed to investigate the outcomes of pregnancies affected by EA or tricuspid valve dysplasia (TVD) with circular shunt, focusing on two prenatal management approaches: (1) expectant management (EM) and (2) transplacental non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) therapy. We searched PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science systematically from its inception until June 2023. The random-effect model was used to pool the data. Heterogeneity was asse

Implementing weight management during and after pregnancy to reduce diabetes and CVD risk in maternal and child populations.

Maintaining a healthy weight during pregnancy is critical for both women's and children's health. Excessive gestational weight gain (GWG) can lead to complications such as gestational diabetes, hypertension and caesarean delivery. Insufficient GWG can cause fetal growth restriction and increase infant mortality risk. Additionally, postpartum weight retention raises risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes and other chronic diseases for both mother and child. This review seeks to identify current obstacles in weight management research during and after pregnancy and explore evidence-based strategies to

Pregnancy outcomes in women with sickle cell disease in California.

Adverse pregnancy outcomes occur frequently in women with sickle cell disease (SCD) across the globe. In the United States, Black women experience disproportionately worse maternal health outcomes than all other racial groups. To better understand how social determinants of health impact SCD maternal morbidity, we used California's Department of Health Care Access and Information data (1991-2019) to estimate the cumulative incidence of pregnancy outcomes in Black women with and without SCD-adjusted for age, insurance status, and Distressed Community Index (DCI) scores. Black pregnant women wit

Comparison of the Effects of Citicoline and Piracetam on Hypoxic-ischemic Brain Damage in Neonatal Rabbits.

OBJECTIVES: Perinatal hypoxic-ischemic brain injuries have been a major cause of mortality and neurodevelopmental morbidities in newborns. Citicoline and Piracetam have been used as nootropic agents in a number of studies. In this investigation, we aimed to determine the effects of these agents solely and in combination in hypoxic-ischemic brain damage in rabbit neonates. MATERIALS & METHODS: Hypoxic-ischemic brain damage was induced by the occlusion of both uterine arteries of dams for eight minutes. The subjects were randomly divided into five groups as follows (n=6 per group): control grou

Association of Placental Parameters with Low Birth Weight Among Neonates Born in the Public Hospitals of Hadiya Zone, Southern Ethiopia: An Institution-Based Cross-Sectional Study.

INTRODUCTION: Placenta indices are the significant determinants of perinatal outcome and neonatal mortality. A clinician can predict neonatal status based on the findings from the placental indices. However, there are limited studies on the relationship between placental parameters and neonatal birth weight in Ethiopia. Hence, this study aimed to assess placental parameters and their association with birth weight among neonates born at public hospitals in southern Ethiopia. METHODS: A facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted on 249 systematically selected placentae with the attached

Upregulation of METTL14 contributes to trophoblast dysfunction by elevating FOXO3a expression in an m6A-dependent manner.

INTRODUCTION: Preeclampsia, a specific complication of pregnancy, is a leading cause of perinatal and maternal mortality worldwide. N6-methyladenosine (m6A) is a prevalent and reversible modification of mammalian mRNAs, and is known to play an important role in various physiological and pathological processes. However, little is known about its possible effects on trophoblasts in preeclampsia. METHODS: Colorimetric RNA m6A methylation quantification assay and dot blotting were used to assess the levels of global RNA m6A modification in placental tissues collected from females with normal preg

miR-31-5p from placental and peripheral blood exosomes is a potential biomarker to diagnose preeclampsia.

BACKGROUND: Preeclampsia, a multisystem disorder of unknown etiology, is one of the leading causes of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. Identifying sensitive, noninvasive markers can aid its prevention and improve prognosis. microRNAs (miRs), which function as negative regulators of gene expression, are closely related to preeclampsia occurrence and development. Herein we investigated the relationship between the DLK1-Dio3 imprinted miR cluster derived from placental and peripheral blood exosomes of pregnant women with preeclampsia and routine clinical diagnostic indicators, and

The effect of iron supplementation on maternal iron deficiency anemia does not differ by baseline anemia type among Tanzanian pregnant women without severe iron deficiency anemia.

PURPOSE: Whether anemia type modifies the risk of pregnancy and newborn outcomes and the effectiveness of iron supplementation is unclear. We examined the association of iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and non-iron deficiency anemia (NIDA) on the risks of these outcomes and the extent to which anemia type modifies the impact of prenatal iron supplementation. METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of a placebo-controlled trial of iron supplementation among 1450 HIV-negative women in Tanzania. Eligibility criteria included gestational age < 27 weeks, hemoglobin > 85 g/L, and ferritin > 12 µg/L. In

Aspirin-Mediated Reset of Preeclamptic Placental Stem Cell Transcriptome - Implication for Stabilized Placental Function.

Preeclampsia (PE) is a pregnancy-specific disease, occurring in ~ 2-10% of all pregnancies. PE is associated with increased maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality, hypertension, proteinuria, disrupted artery remodeling, placental ischemia and reperfusion, and inflammation. The mechanism of PE pathogenesis remains unresolved explaining limited treatment. Aspirin is used to reduce the risk of developing PE. This study investigated aspirin's effect on PE-derived placenta mesenchymal stem cells (P-MSCs). P-MSCs from chorionic membrane (CM), chorionic villi, membranes from the maternal and

Factors associated with Medicaid participation among infants born with birth defects in Texas, 2010-2014.

BACKGROUND: Birth defects are major contributors to healthcare resource use, disability, and mortality, particularly during the perinatal period. As the nation's public insurance program for low-income individuals, Medicaid funds a large proportion of healthcare costs associated with birth defects. Here, we explore birth defect-related factors associated with Medicaid participation in the first year of life. METHODS: Infants born with birth defects between 2010 and 2014 were linked from the Texas Birth Defects Registry to the state's Medicaid claims database. Variation in Medicaid participati

Decreased moderate admission hypothermia in extremely preterm newborns.

BACKGROUND: Admission temperature is inversely correlated with mortality and morbidity risk in extremely preterm newborns (EPNs). As almost all EPNs require advanced resuscitation at birth, we improved a simple and comprehensive management protocol to reduce admission hypothermia. This study reports the changes over the past 15 years in the rate of admission hypothermia in all EPNs. It clarified the distribution of admission temperature and the risk factors for developing admission hypothermia in recent EPNs. METHODS: This single-center study retrospectively analyzed the EPNs delivered at our

Maternal fish and shellfish consumption and preterm birth: a retrospective study in urban China.

Preterm birth is the leading cause of perinatal mortality and morbidity. Some prospective cohort studies suggested that fish and shellfish consumption may affect the incidence of preterm birth. However, conflicting evidence exists on the relationship between fish and shellfish consumption and preterm birth. A total of 10 179 women from Gansu province were interviewed after delivery to collect information on their past intake of fish and shellfish using FFQ. Logistic regression models were used to estimate OR and 95 % CI to examine the association between fish and shellfish consumption and pret
