[Psychological characteristics of deviant sexual aggressors].

Based on psychological examination of 20 paraphilia sexual aggressors the authors focused attention on assessment of specific personality characteristics of this patient group. The results of MMPI, DOPEN and Hand test suggest that their problems are not confined only to the sphere of sexual motivation and sexual socialization. They indicate maladaptation in interpersonal relations (hostility, lack of responsibility, suspicion, lack of empathy), emotional maladaptation (low sensitivity, absence of feeling of guilt) and increased probability of generally aggressive and criminal behaviour (predom

Seasonal affective disorder and the yoga paradigm: a reconsideration of the role of the pineal gland.

Seasonal Affective Disorder is a psychiatric disorder whose pathophysiology and clinical presentation are poorly understood. By applying the ancient paradigm of yoga psychology to this subject, new understandings of the syndrome emerge regarding the possible role of the pineal gland, the clinical presentation of the syndrome, and the possible mechanism of action of phototherapy. The energy depletion model presented here ties together such diverse elements as: dose-response aspects of phototherapy, anergia as a primary symptom of SAD, 'spring fever', myofascial pain disorder, the anti-gonadotro

Enzyme activity and behavior in hyperactive children grown up.

Thirty-one men, originally seen as children for problems with overactivity, distractibility, and impulsiveness, were reevaluated at ages 21-23 years. Subjects were interviewed and tested and provided a blood sample for analyses of dopamine-beta-hydroxylase (DBH), monoamine oxidase (MAO), and catechol-O-methyl-transferase (COMT). A series of Pearson correlations between the biological variables and psychological measures revealed that MAO levels were negatively associated with measures of drug involvement, cigarette use, fire-setting, and sensation seeking; DBH levels were positively associated

Chronic musculoskeletal pain and functional status in juvenile rheumatoid arthritis: an empirical model.

An empirical model is proposed and tested on variables hypothesized to influence functional status in 23 children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis experiencing chronic musculoskeletal pain. Child psychological adjustment, family psychosocial environment, chronic musculoskeletal pain, and disease activity were entered into multiple regression analyses to statistically predict 4 functional status criterion variables: activities of daily living (ADL), activities involvement, school functioning, and social functioning. Predictor variable relationships were found for all 4 functional status crite

Eating disorders in general practice.

A total of 748 patients who attended four south London group practices were screened using the eating attitudes test; 1% of women had bulimia nervosa and a further 3% a partial syndrome eating disorder. Eating and weight control behaviour and psychiatric indicators for an eating disorder were analysed. Patients with bulimia nervosa and partial syndromes were remarkably similar. They were mainly women, from the middle to upper classes, in the normal weight range but having had considerable weight fluctuation in the past, more likely to have had a history of menstrual irregularity, often psychol

Castration complex. Evidence from men operated for hypospadias.

Thirty-three adult hypospadiacs and 36 matched controls were investigated by means of Rorschach's test, in a double-blind design. From psychoanalytic theory predictions were made about the effects of the influences of the genital malformation and its treatment on the psychological adjustment. The hypospadiacs differed significantly from the controls as predicted. They exhibited more neurotic constriction with less ego-strength and less utilization of resources. Their anxiety and hostility levels were judged higher and they showed less self-esteem and activity as well as less capacity for inter

Clonidine ameliorates Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (TS) is a severe, familial neuropsychiatric disorder of childhood onset that is characterized by multiform motor, phonic, behavioral, and psychological symptoms. Clonidine hydrochloride, a centrally active alpha-adrenergic agonist, was observed to ameliorate the disorder in the majority of 25 patients who could not tolerate or did not benefit from treatment with haloperidol. Clonidine had a gradual onset of action. Compulsive behavior, frustration intolerance, speech difficulties, behavioral blocking, attentional problems, and tics were responsive to treatment. T

Mental disturbed violent offenders in Sweden.

Among perpetrators of crimes of violence against persons submitted to psychiatric examination, 16 men with severe mental disorder have been examined by standardized psychologic tests and clinical interviews. Objective anamnestic data have been used to assess social background, individual development and onset of mental disorder. Psychotic as well as nonpsychotic men reacted with violence against threat to the offender's physical existence of his self image. In most instances ego weakness or depleted mental energy exaggerated the feeling of threat or stymied the ability to choose alternative so

The Relationship Between Physical Fitness and Physical Literacy: Empirical Evidence Linking Two Physical Activity-Health Concepts.

Research on promoting physical activity (PA) primarily revolves around two key concepts: physical fitness (PF), defined as a set of measurable physical capacities (strength, speed, endurance and coordination), and physical literacy (PL), a multidimensional construct encompassing physical, psychological, social and cognitive dimensions that support lifelong engagement in PA. While both contribute to health outcomes, they are grounded in distinct conceptual paradigms: PF is typically approached from a biophysical and outcome-oriented perspective, focusing on measurable capacities, whereas PL ado

Sexual Function and Depressive Symptoms in Premenopausal Women with Differentiated Thyroid Cancer: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) is the most common endocrine malignancy, disproportionately affecting women. Despite excellent survival outcomes, DTC treatment, particularly long-term thyrotropin (TSH) suppression therapy, has been associated with differences in psychological well-being and sexual function. Although the association between thyroid dysfunction and female sexual dysfunction (FSD) is well-established, limited data exist regarding FSD in premenopausal women with DTC. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the presence and severity of depressive symptoms and FSD in premenopa

From anxiety and depression to non-suicidal self-injury in youths: the mediating effect of neuroticism and the moderating effect of thyroid hormones.

OBJECTIVE: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a common but maladaptive behavior among adolescents. Previous studies demonstrated a significant association of anxiety and depression with NSSI. However, the psychological and neuroendocrine mechanisms through which negative emotions influence NSSI remain unclear. The present study aimed to investigate whether the personality trait of neuroticism mediates the relationship between negative emotions and NSSI, and whether thyroid hormones moderate this pathway. METHODS: A total of 104 Han Chinese adolescents and young adults (aged 12-22 years) who e

Predicting Job Performance in the Nonprofit Sector: The Role of Self-Efficacy and Type D Personality Traits in Greek Non-governmental Organization Employees.

BACKGROUND: Job performance (JP) in non-governmental organizations (NGOs) is shaped by both facilitating and inhibiting psychological factors. While self-efficacy (SE) enhances motivation and task execution, Type D personality, characterized by negative affectivity (NA) and social inhibition (SI), has been associated with poor work outcomes. However, limited research has examined these variables in nonprofit environments. This study aimed to explore the predictive role of SE and Type D personality on in-role and extra-role job performance among NGO employees in Greece. OBJECTIVE: This study e

BACKGROUND: Androgen Deprivation Therapy (ADT) for prostate cancer causes significant adverse effects including muscle wasting, bone density reduction, increased fatigue, and psychological distress. Despite growing evidence supporting exercise as an effective countermeasure, standardized evidence-based protocols for this population remain underdeveloped in clinical practice. Exercise is beneficial for managing cancer-related side effects, and general exercise guidelines for cancer survivors are available, but tailoring of exercise interventions may be more effective in those with treatment-spe
