CONCLUSIONS: Inferior vestibular neuritis (IVN) is a relatively minor subtype of vestibular neuritis (VN) and its clinical characteristics are unique.
OBJECTIVES: To clarify clinical characteristics of IVN in comparison with conventional VN.
METHODS: This was a retrospective case series review. Caloric responses and cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential (cVEMP) responses were measured in 71 patients with VN. The patients were classified into three groups: (1) IVN group, who showed only asymmetrical cVEMP responses; (2) superior VN (SVN) group, who showed only asymmetrical caloric res

BACKGROUND: Ménière's syndrome appears to be the final common pathway of the mechanisms the inner ear responds to almost any injury. Although the autoimmune disease seems to play a major role, exposure to intense noise can also be a trigger in the appearance and/or aggravation of the disease.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The case of 41 years old musician with a history of ankylosing spondylitis, diagnosed with Ménière's syndrome 5 years ago, is presented. Recently the symptoms became more polymorphic, revealing the association between benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), Ménière's syndrome a

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article reviews the current literature on neurological disorders causing vestibular signs and symptoms. The review focusses on vestibular migraine, vestibular stroke syndromes, and supratentorial gait disorders.
RECENT FINDINGS: A familiar type of vestibular migraine with autosomal dominant inheritance has been linked to chromosome 5q35. In patients with vestibular migraine, vestibular testing in the asymptomatic interval, including VEMPs, produces heterogeneous and often only minor abnormalities. Migraine headaches can be triggered by vestibular stimulation suggesting

BACKGROUND: Spider (Latrodectus tredecimguttatus) bites are relatively common in North East Iran. They induce morbidity and rarely mortality. We aimed to investigate clinical, electrocardiographic and para-clinical changes in patients with this bite.
METHODS: All consecutive patients admitted with suspected spider bites between September 2005 and September 2006 were studied prospectively.
RESULTS: Spider bites accounted for 56 cases (0.5% of all poisoning, 21% of all admitted envenomated). The patients' mean (SD) age was 32 (16) years. The most common findings were pain (90%) mainly in their

A 39-year-old man acutely developed diplopia, vertigo, unsteady gait, and disturbance of consciousness following an upper respiratory infection. Neurological examination showed ophthalmoplegia, facial paralysis, tetraplegia and loss of deep tendon reflexes. Babinski reflex was positive on the left and there were bilateral flexor withdrawal reflexes. He also developed ballism-like involuntary movements in all extremities, loss of proprioception predominantly on the left, and severe truncal ataxia. Anti-GQ1b IgG antibody was selectively elevated in serum, and CSF protein was elevated to 53 mg/dl

CONCLUSIONS: Finding human herpesvirus (HHV)-7 and dual HHV-6A and -6B DNA in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of two facial palsy (FP) patients is intriguing but does not allow etiologic conclusions as such. HHV-6 or -7 DNA was revealed in 10% of the CSF samples tested from 70 immunocompetent adolescents and adults; a highly unusual result. How these findings are associated with the diseases they accompany remains to be defined.
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether herpes simplex virus (HSV)-1 and -2, varicella-zoster virus (VZV), HHV-6A, -6B, and -7, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), and cytomegalovirus (CMV)

BACKGROUND: In the assessment of vertigo patients with suspected cervicocephalic somatosensory deficit, the studies published thus far have focused on reflectory systems like the cervico-ocular reflex or the postural systems. Our study examines the cervicocephalic kinesthetic sensibility of head and body coordination. We therefore introduce two preliminary test series: the "subjective zero chin-knee-angle of the occipital joints" and the "saccadic repositioning during trunk rotation".
METHODS: Subjective recordings of dizziness complaints were done using the Dizziness Handicap Inventory.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This paper reviews the often-enigmatic relationships between dizziness and psychiatric symptoms. Psychiatric causes of dizziness, neuro-otologic causes of anxiety, underrecognized co-morbid conditions, and medical illnesses that masquerade as 'psychogenic' dizziness are examined. Key clinical features and data from recent treatment trials are presented with potential pathophysiologic mechanisms.
RECENT FINDINGS: Investigations at the interface between psychiatry and neuro-otology have identified the distinguishing features of several clinical conditions that present with no

In this report, we present a 63-year-old woman who had limited cutaneous systemic sclerosis and subsequently developed typical primary biliary cirrhosis after an acute myocardial infarction. The patient initially developed Raynaud's phenomenon, and 4 years later visited the clinic in 1994 complaining of abdominal distress, xerostomia, and xerophthalmia. A diagnosis of limited cutaneous systemic sclerosis was based on Raynaud's phenomenon, sclerodactyly and anti-centromere antibodies. She was also found to have anti-inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptor 3 (IP(3)R3) antibodies, but anti-mitochon

The aim of this study is to describe tinnitus epidemiological characteristics in Ménière's disease (MD), the prognosis and its interaction with other MD symptoms. It is a descriptive transversal study. One hundred two MD patients were referred to a tinnitus clinic. Tinnitus was evaluated according to psychoacoustical tinnitogram, visual analogue scale, and tinnitus handicap inventory (THI). All patients were diagnosed with definitive MD (following AAO-HNS' 95 criteria). Pitch was more commonly identified in low and medium frequencies. Psychoacoustical intensity was matched in 12.7 dB.
