Decomposing the Association Between Neighborhood Homicide Rates and Stress-Related Health Outcomes Among Black Men in Chicago.

INTRODUCTION: Individuals living in neighborhoods with high levels of violence are exposed to chronic stress, which can have deleterious effects on health. In addition, subjective appraisal of stress may influence health outcomes. METHODS: The authors conducted structural equation modeling. The authors used data collected between May and August 2022, which included 127 older Black men who resided in Chicago, to explore the extent to which perceptions of stress and violence exposure mediate the relationship between actual neighborhood homicide rate and health outcomes. RESULTS: Bivariate stat

Why or Who Waits for Marriage? The Sociological Rationale for Chastity.

This article evaluates the sociological aspects of saving sex for marriage. Promiscuity is linked to high rates of sexually transmitted infections, abortion, and high rates of divorce, which has multiple negative consequences on children. Single motherhood and cohabitation are also associated with negative consequences for children including lower emotional well-being, emotional problems, poorer physical health, and poorer academic achievement. Cohabitation, which is becoming increasingly common either before marriage or without marriage, is associated with a higher frequency of intimate partn

EpiWEAT: a new digital assessment tool for epigenetic studies.

INTRODUCTION: Intimate partner violence (IPV) profoundly impacts women's health, increasing the risk of chronic and non-communicable diseases. Recent findings underscore the promise of epigenetic indicators to uncover the enduring effects of trauma on the human genome, especially concerning stress-related conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the lasting health impacts of violence against women, developing a digital tool specifically structured to consolidate crucial details about the contexts of violence, the relationship between victim and perpetr

Date SMART's Impact on Aggression in System Involved Girls: Does Victimization Moderate Effects?

Aggression and victimization increase negative outcomes for legal system involved girls. While aggression is often enacted against multiple targets (e.g., peers, dating partners), most interventions only target one violence type (e.g., teen dating violence [TDV]). However, TDV shares risk factors with other violence forms; therefore, TDV-specific interventions may reduce other types of violence (e.g., general aggression). The current study explored the effects of a TDV intervention, Date SMART, on general physical and verbal aggression (i.e., aggression not tied to dating) in legal system invo

Reinforcement sensitivity and the association between exposure to racism and internalizing psychopathology among black young adults.

Black Americans face frequent exposure to racialized forms of stress directly through interpersonal discrimination experiences and indirectly through racialized social contexts that are shaped by structural factors (e.g., exposure to community violence). Research findings link chronic stress exposure to increased risk for internalizing psychopathology, yet internalizing outcomes among Black Americans are varied. Reinforcement sensitivity theory (RST) describes two systems, the behavioral inhibition system (BIS) and behavioral activation system (BAS), which are thought to shape individual diffe

Mental health problems might be the result of child abuse considering that their prevalences are increasing simultaneously in Indonesia. The aim of this study was to determine the association between depression and a history of abuse among adolescents. METHODS: An analytic cross-sectional study was conducted on 786 junior high school students from Bandung City, West Java, Indonesia. Subjects were selected using two-stage cluster sampling. Associations between PTSD and intimate partner and non-partner aggression among substance using veterans in specialty mental health.

BACKGROUND: Risk factors of violence perpetration in veterans include substance use and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD); however, it is unknown whether these factors are associated with greater risk for partner or non-partner violence. This study investigated the associations between probable PTSD, heavy drinking, marijuana use, cocaine use, and partner and non-partner violence perpetration. METHODS: Self-report questionnaires assessing past-year partner and non-partner aggression (CTS2) as well as past-month substance use (SAOM), probable PTSD (PCL-C), and probable depression (PHQ-9) we

Clinical and Criminal Characteristics of Patients With Schizophrenia Exhibiting Homicidal and Non-Homicidal Behavior: A Comparative Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Public concern regarding homicides committed by individuals with schizophrenia has intensified in recent years. Although the overall crime rate in this population is not significantly higher than that of the general population, certain subgroups may present an elevated homicide risk. Identifying associated risk factors and distinguishing between impulsive and premeditated violence are crucial for developing effective forensic psychiatric assessment and prevention strategies. METHODS: Medical records of patients with schizophrenia admitted to the National Forensic Hospital in Korea

Men and intimate partner rape: characteristics of men who sexually abuse their partner.

This article explores men's use of sexual violence against their intimate partner. Although there is a growing body of information about men's use of physical violence, there is less data about men's sexual violence in intimate partnerships. Data were collected from 229 men who were enrolled in an intervention program for men who abuse. Of men in this study, 53% had sexually assaulted their partner at least one time. This article will address the ways in which this sample of men sexually abused their partner and the connection between physical and sexual abuse within their relationships.

Posttraumatic stress symptoms and victimization among Japanese American women.

This study of Japanese American women and immigrant women from Japan investigated the relationship between posttraumatic stress (PTS) symptoms and the perceived abusiveness of partners' emotional and physical violence, with a community-based randon sample. Women who experienced injuries and/or fear for their lives, in addition to partners' emotional and physical violence, had significantly higher PTS symptom counts than those with no lifetime experience of partners' violence. Victimization by nonintimates also increased PTS symptom counts. Satisfaction with social support significantly mitigat

Nearby arrests and violent crime as predictors of student absenteeism.

This study tests the role of violence and policing in predicting student absences at the school level in New York City. It uses a large dataset on daily attendance over six school years (2013-2014-2018-2019) across all New York City public schools, and operationalizes policing by arrests, and violence by reported violent crime. While much literature focuses on the impact of violence on student outcomes, this study finds that arrests are, in fact, a relatively strong predictor of school absences. Perhaps more importantly, nearby arrests have a uniquely strong association in schools with greater
