MR imaging of meniscal subluxation in the knee.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to establish diagnostic criteria for meniscal subluxation, and to determine whether there was any connection between meniscal subluxation and other common meniscal and knee-joint abnormalities. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The normal position of the meniscal body was assessed in 10 asymptomatic volunteers. MR signs of meniscal subluxation were evaluated retrospectively in 60 symptomatic patients with pain in the knee, impaired mobility, and/or joint swelling who had no clear diagnosis after the evaluation of case history, clinical examination, and radiography. Toxic effects of chronic fluoride ingestion on the upper gastrointestinal tract.

In a prospective case controlled study, we evaluated the adverse effects of long-term fluoride ingestion on the gastrointestinal tract. Ten patients with otosclerosis who were receiving sodium fluoride 30 mg/day for a period of 3-12 months, and 10 age- and sex-matched healthy volunteers were included. They were all evaluated clinically and subjected to a real time ultrasound examination, upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, and biopsies from the gastric antrum and duodenum. The biopsies were subjected to a rapid urease test as well as light and electron microscopic examinations. Ionic fluoride wa

[Aphasia following apoplexy. Frequency, remission and effect of treatment].

About one fourth of the patients affected by apoplexy develop an aphasic speech defect. The greater proportion of recovery occurs within the first three months after the apoplectic insult. The remainder of the recovery usually occurs in the subsequent three months and this, as a rule, is limited. According to the majority of investigations, significant improvement in speech is relatively rare after six months. The severity of the aphasia is closely connected with the degree of severity of the apoplexy. Patients with severe apoplexy and severe aphasia have poorer prognoses than patients with mi

Aspirin kinetics and inhibition of platelet thromboxane generation-relevance for a solution of the "aspirin dilemma".

Six healthy male volunteers received aspirin (ASA) in a compressed (320 mg) and an enteric-coated (800 mg) formulation as single oral doses ten days apart. Ten plasma samples were obtained from each volunteer between 5 and 120 min after compressed ASA, and seven between 10 and 240 min after enteric-coated ASA. ASA was undetectable (less than 100 ng/ml) in plasma from three subjects receiving compressed ASA and two receiving the enteric-coated preparation. Plasma levels and kinetic parameters of salicylate were the same in subjects with undetectable and detectable ASA plasma levels. More than 9

Pilot study of a low-attenuation anechoic gastrointestinal contrast filling agent for enhancing transabdominal ultrasound examination of the pancreas.

BACKGROUND: Transabdominal ultrasound is constrained by gastric gas and collapsed folds when evaluating the pancreas. This study developed a low-attenuation anechoic gastrointestinal filling contrast agent (LAA-GFCA) composed of food-grade ingredients and performed a safety evaluation. METHODS: Acoustic characterization of LAA-GFCA was performed using the water-immersion insertion substitute method, with phantom experiments designed to evaluate imaging performance. Pre-clinical safety studies were conducted in rabbits, followed by a clinical pilot study in healthy volunteers to assess safety

Multi-contrast dual-resolution UTE for myelin fraction mapping and structural imaging.

PURPOSE: To introduce and evaluate a novel multi-contrast dual-resolution 3D-UTE sequence (multi-UTE) for cerebral myelin fraction (MF) estimation in vivo and benchmark it against electron microscopy-based myelin volume fraction. THEORY AND METHODS: Direct detection of myelin in tissue is challenging due to the ultrashort T 2 ∗ of the myelin bilayer. In this work, a high-resolution UTE pulse sequence with 1-1 binomial water excitation pulses was combined with interleaved multi-echo UTE acquisitions at lower resolution, enabling simultaneous acquisition of quantitative, water-excited, high-

Associations of epigenetic aging and COVID- 19: A 3-year longitudinal study.

Aging and COVID- 19 are known to influence DNA methylation, potentially affecting the rate of aging and the risk of disease. The physiological functions of 54 volunteers-including maximal oxygen uptake (VO₂ max), grip strength, and vertical jump-were assessed just before the COVID- 19 pandemic and again 3 years later. Of these volunteers, 27 had contracted COVID- 19. Eight epigenetic clocks were used to assess the rate of aging during the 3-year period: DNAmAge showed accelerated aging, and five clocks showed slowed aging (DNAmAgeSkinBlood, DNAmAgeHannum, DNAmFitAge, PhenoAge, and DNAmTL). Altered expression of miRNA profile in peripheral blood mononuclear cells following the third dose of inactivated COVID-19 vaccine.

COVID-19 vaccination is the most effective strategy for preventing severe disease and death. Inactivated vaccines are the most accessible type of COVID-19 vaccines in developing countries. Several studies, including work from our group, have demonstrated that the third dose (booster vaccination) of inactivated COVID-19 vaccine induces robust humoral and cellular immune responses. The present study aimed to examine miRNA expression profile in participants who received a homologous third dose of the CoronaVac vaccine. Samples of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were collected from heal

Inspiratory effort increases blood volume in the thoracic cavity and decreases end-expiratory lung impedance: a preliminary prospective study.

PURPOSE: Passive leg raising (PLR) increases intrathoracic blood volume by redistributing blood from the lower to the upper body area. While inspiratory effort is hypothesized to have a similar effect due to pressure differences between the intrathoracic and extrathoracic cavities, direct evidence is scarce. Therefore, this study evaluated whether excessive inspiratory effort increases intrathoracic blood volume using end-expiratory lung impedance (EELI). METHODS: Volunteers, fitted with electrical impedance tomography (EIT) belts, underwent a spontaneous breathing procedure in the supine pos

Different microcirculatory patterns in patients with COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 ARDS: A multicenter cross-sectional study.

PURPOSE: COVID-19 is a systemic illness with widespread microcirculatory involvement. Nevertheless, reports about the characteristics of sublingual microcirculation in patients with COVID-19 are controversial. In fact, total vascular density has been described as decreased, normal, or increased. Our goal was to assess comprehensively the sublingual microcirculation in patients with COVID-19, comparing it with that of patients with non-COVID-19 ARDS and with healthy volunteers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a multicenter cross-sectional study. We included mechanically ventilated patients wit

A nitroalkene derivative of salicylate, SANA, induces creatine-dependent thermogenesis and promotes weight loss.

The emergence of glucagon-like peptide-1 agonists represents a notable advancement in the pharmacological treatment of obesity, yet complementary approaches are essential. Through phenotypic drug discovery, we developed promising nitroalkene-containing small molecules for obesity-related metabolic dysfunctions. Here, we present SANA, a nitroalkene derivative of salicylate, demonstrating notable efficacy in preclinical models of diet-induced obesity. SANA reduces liver steatosis and insulin resistance by enhancing mitochondrial respiration and increasing creatine-dependent energy expenditure in
