Odontogenic sinusitis is a common cause of unilateral sinus disease with maxillary sinus opacification.

BACKGROUND: Unilateral sinus disease (USD) carries a broader differential diagnosis than bilateral sinus disease, including various inflammatory and neoplastic conditions. Odontogenic sinusitis (ODS) is a common cause of unilateral maxillary sinusitis, but few studies have examined its incidence among all USD etiologies. The main purposes of this prospective study were to determine the incidences of ODS and other etiologies causing USD with complete maxillary sinus opacification on computed tomography (CT), and to compare CT features of ODS and non-odontogenic USD patients. In addition, clinic

Transmigration of polymorphnuclear neutrophils and monocytes through the human blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier after bacterial infection in vitro.

BACKGROUND: Bacterial invasion through the blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier (BCSFB) during bacterial meningitis causes secretion of proinflammatory cytokines/chemokines followed by the recruitment of leukocytes into the CNS. In this study, we analyzed the cellular and molecular mechanisms of polymorphonuclear neutrophil (PMN) and monocyte transepithelial transmigration (TM) across the BCSFB after bacterial infection. METHODS: Using an inverted transwell filter system of human choroid plexus papilloma cells (HIBCPP), we studied leukocyte TM rates, the migration route by immunofluorescence, tr

Recurrent TERT promoter mutations in urothelial carcinoma and potential clinical applications.

Increased telomerase activity is associated with almost all types of advanced human cancers with unknown molecular mechanism(s). Two recurrent point mutations in the promoter region of telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT)--the key subunit of telomerase--have recently been identified in melanoma as well as a small sample of bladder cancer cell lines. However, the incidence and clinical-pathological significance of these mutations in urothelial carcinoma have not been well established yet. We collected 86 specimens of urothelial carcinoma including upper and lower urinary tract: high grade an

An Advanced Co-Culture Model of the Human Blood-Cerebrospinal Fluid Barrier for Separate Analysis of Choroid Plexus Epithelium and Endothelium.

The highly perfused choroid plexus (CP), located in the ventricular system of the brain, consists of several structural components, including a cuboid epithelium and a fenestrated endothelium, and is the location of the blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier (BCSFB). To investigate the CP in vitro, several different cell culture setups are conceivable. An inverted cell culture filter model with strong barrier function, based on human epithelial CP papilloma (HIBCPP) cells, was established by our laboratory and is used extensively. Recently, we were able to generate a stable immortalized human CP en

Predicting nasal diseases based on microbiota relationship network.

OBJECTIVES: Increasing evidence indicates that the local microbiome can be used to predict host disease states. However, constructing models that obtain better results with fewer features is still challenging. METHODS: In this study, we established a nasal microbiome database consisting of 132 chronic rhinosinusitis patients, 27 nasal inverted papilloma patients, and 45 control patients. 16S rRNA gene sequencing was used to identify the species and abundance of bacteria in each sample, and a nasal microbiome database was generated after low-abundance bacteria were eliminated. The correlation

Frontal sinus "mega-trephination" in a tertiary rhinology practice.

BACKGROUND: Frontal sinus trephination is traditionally performed through a small cutaneous incision and osteotomy, allowing irrigation of the frontal sinus. Utilizing the trephination osteotomy for endoscopic visualization and surgical manipulation requires a larger opening. This "mega-trephination" is thought to carry an increased risk of cosmetic deformity given the increased bony removal at the anterior table. The purpose of our study was to clarify the risks of frontal sinus mega-trephination and examine how this technique is incorporated into a modern, tertiary care rhinology practice.

Virus-associated neoplasms of the nasopharynx and sinonasal tract: diagnostic problems.

A significant fraction of nasopharyngeal and sinonasal tumors are associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) or human papillomavirus (HPV). Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma harbor EBV in practically all cases, although a small proportion of cases of the former harbor HPV. Sinonasal inverted papillomas harbor HPV in about 25% of cases. Sinonasal squamous cell carcinomas harbor transcriptionally active HPV in about 20% of cases, and limited data suggest that this subset has a better prognosis than the HPV-negative subset. This review addresses the diagnostic issues

Modified transnasal endoscopic medial maxillectomy through prelacrimal duct approach.

OBJECTIVE: We previously reported a modified endoscopic medial maxillectomy (modified transnasal endoscopic medial maxillectomy through prelacrimal duct approach [MTEMMPDA]) to resect inverted papilloma (IP), for which the inferior turbinate (IT) and nasolacrimal duct (ND) can be preserved. MTEMMPDA is a safe and effective method to obtain wide, straight access to the maxillary sinus (MS). However, there are few reported cases of patients who underwent MTEMMPDA, and even fewer of patients who underwent partial osteotomy of the apertura piriformis and the anterior wall of the MS. In this study,
