Prison officers' experiences of aggression: implications for sleep and recovery.

BACKGROUND: Prison officers are at high risk of assault that can impair their mental as well as physical health. Such experiences can also disrupt sleep, with negative implications for well-being and job performance. By impairing recovery processes, work-related hypervigilance and rumination might be key factors in this association. AIMS: To examine prison officers' personal experiences of aggression and associations with sleep quality. Also, to consid

Risk and resilience in the red lights: a mini-review on sex worker lived experiences and mental health outcomes.

Sex workers experience disproportionately high rates of depression, anxiety, PTSD, suicidality, dissociation, and substance use across global contexts. Sex work refers to the consensual exchange of sexual services, performances, or content for compensation; debates persist regarding the impact of coercion and constraint within sex work, particularly in relation to structural and economic pressures. This mini-review synthesizes research on the structural, social, and occupational determinants of sex workers' mental health, emphasizing how legal frameworks, work venues, stigma, and interpersonal

Aggression and violence towards health care providers--a problem in Turkey?

Health care providers are increasingly concerned about the escalating incidence of verbal and physical abuse to healthcare staff. Factors, such as long wait in hospital areas, which lead to client frustration over an inability to obtain needed services promptly, are influencing these situations. Nonetheless, incidents of this nature can cause immense psychological harm as well as physical damage among medical employees. The current study aimed to ascertain from staff members aggressive experiences in the workplace, and the effects on the individual. The results of this study mirrored those of

Mental symptoms and cause-specific mortality among midlife employees.

BACKGROUND: Mental symptoms are prevalent among populations, but their associations with premature mortality are inadequately understood. We examined whether mental symptoms contribute to cause-specific mortality among midlife employees, while considering key covariates. METHODS: Baseline mail survey data from 2000-02 included employees, aged 40-60, of the City of Helsinki, Finland (n = 8960, 80 % women, response rate 67 %). Mental symptoms were measured by the General Health Questionnaire 12-item version (GHQ-12) and the Short Form 36 mental component summary (MCS). Covariates included sex,

The Experiences of Registered Nurses Who are Injured by Interpersonal Violence While on Duty in an Emergency Department.

A successful career as an emergency department registered nurse (RN) requires the ability to respond quickly to a wide variety of potentially life-threatening illnesses and injuries. The unpredictable nature of this work can evoke emotional and physical stress on the RN beyond that which might be experienced by nurses who work in more stable, controlled, and predictable environments. Emergency healthcare is predicated on unexpected illness or injury leading to unscheduled episodic work. Additional stress is placed on the RN by the potential for violence that occurs in emergency departments. Th
