The effect of active oxygen-containing toothpaste on Streptococcus mutans and white spot lesions: An in-vivo randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Fixed appliances limit patients' ability to clean their teeth, thus making orthodontic patients highly susceptible to developing white spot lesions (WSLs). Using patient compliance would be one of the simplest methods to prevent WSLs. METHODS: A parallel trial design with 34 patients that met the eligibility criteria were randomized to experimental (received Blue M oxygen for health toothpaste) and control (received Colgate Total fluoridated toothpaste) groups. The eligibility criteria were that the patients should be aged 13-30 years, on fixed mechanotherapy, had undergone ther

Digit-sucking: a review of the literature, clinical observations and treatment recommendations.

Prolonged digit-sucking habits can have a negative impact on dental, speech, physical and emotional development. Children can be helped to eliminate their sucking habits quickly, without coercion, and in a positive way. Admittedly, most of my data is based purely on clinical observation. However, clinical observation is the basis for classical scientific investigation. I welcome this investigation; it is long overdue. Much of the literature available to parents appears to take a rather cavalier attitude with regard to the dental consequences of sucking habits. Parents are frequently left with

The pelvic floor muscles: muscle thickness in healthy and urinary-incontinent women measured by perineal ultrasonography with reference to the effect of pelvic floor training. Estrogen receptor studies.

Maintenance of urinary continence is multifactorial and depends mainly on detrusor control and urethral closure function. The closure forces can be categorized as permanent closure forces active at rest, and adjunctive closure forces active during physical activities. The efficiency of these forces depends on the structural components in the urethral wall, the position of the bladder neck and proximal urethra, the periurethral striated muscles, and the pelvic floor muscles. By means of pudendal blockade and simultaneous recordings of pressure and cross-sectional area in the urethra, it has bee

Orthognathic and TMJ surgery: postsurgical patient management.

Postsurgical patient management is a critical factor for high-quality patient treatment and predictable outcomes in orthognathic and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) surgery. Lack of understanding of proper patient management on the part of the surgeon and orthodontist can result in compromised or even disastrous results. Surgeons and orthodontists must have the knowledge and ability to implement postsurgical management protocols and strategies to provide the best care and outcomes possible for their orthognathic and TMJ surgery patients. Information is presented here in reference to postsurgical

Hypoxic preconditioning: effect, mechanism and clinical implication (Part 1).

Hypoxic preconditioning (HPC) refers to exposure of organisms, systems, organs, tissues or cells to moderate hypoxia/ischemia that is able to result in a resistance to subsequent severe hypoxia/ischemia in tissues and cells. The effects exerted by HPC are well documented. The original local in situ (LiHPC) is now broadened to remote ectopic organs-tissues (ReHPC) and extended crossly to cross pluripotential HPC(CpHPC) induced by a variety of stresses other than hypoxia/ischemia, including cancer, for example. We developed a unique animal model of repetitive autohypoxia in adult mice, and studi

Absence of daytime 50 Hz, 100 microT(rms) magnetic field or bright light exposure effect on human performance and psychophysiological parameters.

The purpose of this study was to reproduce and extend two earlier studies of the effects of human exposure to 50 Hz magnetic fields (MF). In a recent paper, we described results of two double-blind investigations performed to examine effects of 100 microT(rms) 50 Hz MF exposure on psychological parameters in the same group of healthy human volunteers. In each exposure session, at 1 week intervals, with sham, continuous, and intermittent (15 s ON/OFF cycles) MF conditions, mood ratings, performance measures, and electrophysiological measures were taken. Facial soft tissue changes in patients following rapid maxillary expansion in children: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Non-surgical rapid maxillary expansion (RME) has been widely investigated regarding skeletal effects, although fewer studies have assessed the associated soft tissue changes, which is an important factor to consider, as orthodontic treatment aims to achieve occlusal harmony and an aesthetically pleasing soft tissue balance. This systematic review examines the existing literature on facial soft tissue changes following rapid maxillary expansion (RME) in children with a maxillary transverse deficiency. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A systematic search was conducted up to July 2025 in four m

Extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields as effectors of cellular responses in vitro: possible immune cell activation.

There is presently an intense discussion if electromagnetic field (EMF) exposure has consequences for human health. This include exposure to structures and appliances that emit in the extremely low frequency (ELF) range of the electromagnetic spectrum, as well as emission coming from communication devices using the radiofrequency part of the spectrum. Biological effects of such exposures have been noted frequently, although the implication for specific health effects is not that clear. The basic interaction mechanism(s) between such fields and living matter is unknown. Numerous hypotheses have

[Orofacial myofunctional reeducation assisted by a prefabricated reeducation appliance: a systematic review of the literature].

INTRODUCTION: Several cross-sectional studies have shown the association of a dysfunctional orofacial environment with a greater prevalence of malocclusions. Orofacial myofunctional reeducation (OFMR) is the rehabilitation of the muscles, functions and resting postures of the orofacial complex. It is used in the therapeutic management of orofacial dysfunction in patients of all ages and with a wide range of disorders and comorbidities. RMOF mainly uses isotonic and isometric exercises targeting the oral and oropharyngeal structures, combined with specific exercises for ventilation, swallowing

Depression outcomes correlated to exposure to per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

Per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are fluorinated organic compounds known as forever chemicals that are used in many materials, from cooking appliances to industrial detergents. Given their high chemical stability due to their lipophilic properties and widespread use, PFAS tend to bioaccumulate in the cardiac, hepatic, renal, gastrointestinal, and neural tissues, resulting in a variety of malignant and non-malignant diseases. Depression is a prevalent mental health condition that affects an individual's activities of daily living. Depression is associated with numerous other chronic

Comparison of Surface Roughness of Different Orthodontic Archwires: Atomic Force Microscopic Study.

BACKGROUND: Surface roughness (SR) of dental components is significant because it impacts the surface area of the contact surface, which in turn affects corrosion behavior and biological compatibility. Orthodontic archwires (OA) with SR can affect the coefficient of friction, which in turn affects how effectively sliding biomechanics work and how the orthodontic appliance works efficiently. AIM: The objectives of the present investigation were to examine the SR of five distinct kinds of OA using an atomic force microscope (AFM) and to assess the merits of using AFM to analyze orthodontic mate

Longitudinal Microbiome Changes in Supragingival Biofilm Transcriptomes Induced by Orthodontics.

INTRODUCTION: Common oral diseases are known to be associated with dysbiotic shifts in the supragingival microbiome, yet most oral microbiome associations with clinical end points emanate from cross-sectional studies. Orthodontic treatment is an elective procedure that can be exploited to prospectively examine clinically relevant longitudinal changes in the composition and function of the supragingival microbiome. METHODS: A longitudinal cohort study was conducted among 24 adolescent orthodontic patients who underwent saliva and plaque sampling and clinical examinations at time points: before
