Head and neck soft tissue reconstruction with anterolateral thigh flaps with various components: Development of an algorithm for flap selection in different clinical scenarios.

OBJECTIVES: The antero-lateral thigh free flap (ALT) is conventionally designed as a fasciocutaneous flap (FALT). However, the thickness of the flap can be designed in at least in two more variants: myocutaneous (MYALT), and myofascial (MALT). The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of ALT flap as a universal solution for head and neck soft tissue reconstruction and development of an algorithm for flap selection in different clinical scenarios. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Forty patients, 29 males, 11 females, with mean age of 61.6 years (range 36-77) were enrolled. Thirty-three patients were

CD163+ macrophages infiltration correlates with the immunosuppressive cytokine interleukin 10 expression in tongue leukoplakia.

OBJECTIVE: Accumulating evidence suggests that macrophages are involved in the immunoediting of oral squamous cell carcinoma but the role of macrophages in oral carcinogenesis is unclear. We aimed to clarify the role of macrophages in oral leukoplakia, which is the most common oral potentially malignant disorder from immunotolerance viewpoint. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 24 patients who underwent surgical resection for tongue leukoplakia. The relationships between macrophage markers and clinicopathological factors were assessed. Conditioned medium was harvested from the CD163+ h

Triple-modality treatment in patients with advanced stage tonsil cancer.

BACKGROUND: Concurrent chemoradiation (CCRT) and upfront surgery followed by adjuvant therapy both are recommended treatment options for patients with advanced stage squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the tonsil. To the authors' knowledge, the question of whether surgical-based treatments can achieve better survival compared with CCRT has never been compared in a clinical trial. The authors analyzed the National Cancer Data Base to measure the impact of different treatment modalities on overall survival (OS). METHODS: All patients aged ≤70 years diagnosed with clinical stage III to IVB (excludi

Oral complications and management strategies for patients undergoing cancer therapy.

With cancer survival rate climbing up over the past three decades, quality of life for cancer patients has become an issue of major concern. Oral health plays an important part in one's overall quality of life. However, oral health status can be severely hampered by side effects of cancer therapies including surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Moreover, prevention and treatment of these complications are often overlooked in clinical practice. The present paper aims at drawing health care professionals' attention to oral complications associated wit

Hormone replacement therapy and cancer survival: a longitudinal cohort study: protocol paper.

IntroductionHormone replacement therapy (HRT) can help women experiencing menopausal symptoms, but usage has declined due to uncertainty around risks of cancer and some cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Moreover, improved cancer survival rates mean that more women who survive cancer go on to experience menopausal symptoms. Understanding these relationships is important so that women and their clinicians can make informed decisions around the risks and benefits of HRT. This study's primary aim is to determine the association between HRT use after cancer diagnosis and the risk of cancer-specific mo
