Paediatric blepharoptosis: a 10-year review.

PURPOSE: To examine the characteristics of blepharoptosis and the success of surgical intervention in a large group of children presenting t … nt in 14.19%, and 18.70% had a significant refractive error requiring spectacles prescription, with anisometropia present in more than 72% of these patients. CONCLUSIONS: Early referral to an ophthalmologist is necessary even though surgical correction may be delayed. Children with congenital ptosis need to be monitored for amblyopia both pre- and post-operati …

Effects of foveal ablation on emmetropization and form-deprivation myopia.

PURPOSE: Because of the prominence of central vision in primates, it has generally been assumed that signals from the fovea dominate refract … myopia; six of the eight infants that experienced monocular form deprivation developed myopic axial anisometropias outside the control range. CONCLUSIONS: Visual signals from the fovea are not essential for normal refractive development or the vision-induced alterations in ocular growth produced by form deprivation. Conversely, the peripheral retina, in isolat …

Nonveridical visual perception in human amblyopia.

PURPOSE: Amblyopia is a developmental disorder of spatial vision. There is evidence to suggest that some amblyopes misperceive spatial structure when viewing with the affected eye. However, there are few examples of these perceptual errors in the literature. This study was an investigation of the prevalence and nature of misperceptions in human amblyopia. METHODS: Thirty amblyopes with strabismus and/or anisometropia participated in the study. Subjects viewed sinusoidal gratings of various spatial frequencies, orientations, and contrasts. After interocular comparison, subjects sketched the su…

Structural and microvascular changes in anisometropic amblyopia: a comparative analysis of swept-source OCTA.

BACKGROUND: To quantitatively evaluate the retinal foveal avascular zone (FAZ) and choroidal vascular and stromal components in children with anisometropic amblyopia using swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography (SS-OCTA), and to investigate the relationship of these measurements with axial length (AL), best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), and spherical equivalent (SE). METHODS: This cross-sectional comparative study included 131 eyes of 89 children: amblyopic (n = 42), fellow (n = 42), and control eyes (n = 47). Retinal parameters, including the FAZ and central macular thickness

Effect of Amblyopia Treatment on Macular Thickness in Eyes With Myopic Anisometropic Amblyopia.

PURPOSE: To determine whether abnormal macular thickness in myopic anisometropic amblyopia differed after amblyopia treatment. Furthermore, to investigate whether effect of treatment on macular thickness was associated with subject age or improvement in stereoacuity. METHODS: Seventeen children (mean age: 9.0 [±3.0] years, ranging from 5.7-13.9 years) with myopic anisometropic amblyopia (visual acuity [VA] in amblyopic eyes: 20/80-20/400) were recruited and treated with 16-week refractive correction, followed by an additional 16-week refractive correction and patching. Choroidal neovascularization after laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis following penetrating keratoplasty.

PURPOSE: To describe a case of choroidal neovascularization (CNV) after laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) following penetrating keratoplasty (PK). METHODS: Case report. RESULTS: A 30-year-old man underwent PK in both eyes for bilateral keratoconus in 1997. Two years later, best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 20/40 (-6=-4.50 x 170 degrees ) in RE and 20/20 (-1.50=-0.50 x 90 degrees ) in LE. To reduce the anisometropic defect, LASIK was performed in RE. After surgery, the refractive defect in RE reduced to -1.75 x 125 degrees and BCVA improved to 20/25. Six months after LASIK the patien

Amniotic band syndrome with significant orofacial clefts and disruptions and distortions of craniofacial structures.

Amniotic band syndrome (ABS) is a rare disorder in which bands of mesoderm that emanate from the chorionic side of the amnion and insert on the fetal body can generate a wide variety of disfiguring and disabling malformations. It usually is sporadic, and the incidence is approximately 1 in 15,000 live births, and affected children typically require involvement of several pediatric surgical subspecialties. The authors describe a case of ABS with extensive craniofacial anomalies.

Baseline factors associated with myopia progression and axial elongation over 30 months in children 5 to 12 years of age.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to identify baseline factors associated with greater myopia progression and axial elongation in children with myopia. METHODS: This study performed a post hoc analysis of data from a 30-month randomized trial of atropine 0.01% versus placebo in children 5 to <13 years old with baseline spherical equivalent refractive error (SER) of -1.00 to -6.00 D, astigmatism of ≤1.50 D, and anisometropia of <1.00 D SER. Data from atropine 0.01% and placebo groups were pooled given outcomes were similar. Baseline factors of age, SER, axial length, race, sex, parental myopia, and ir…

The presence of strabismus and significant refractive errors were risk factors for unilateral amblyopia, while bilateral astigmatism and bilateral hyperopia were risk factors for bilateral amblyopia. Fall risk in patients with pseudophakic monovision.

OBJECTIVE: Vision changes can precipitate falls in the elderly resulting in significant morbidity and mortality. We hypothesized that pseudophakic monovision and ensuing anisometropia and aniseikonia impact elderly fall risk. This study assessed fall risk in patients with pseudophakic monovision, pseudophakic single vision distance (classic cataract surgery), and cataracts with no surgery. DESIGN: Retrospective single-institution cohort study PARTICIPANTS: Patients with bilateral cataracts diagnosed at 60 years of age or older who underwent bilateral cataract surgery (monovision or single vis…
