BACKGROUND: Community photoscreening for amblyopia had successfully been adopted by many communities, however many clinics curtailed screening as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. We modified three conventional devices and tested them for outdoor, drive-by socially distanced photoscreening and refraction.
METHODS: External frames that provide luminance control and focus distance were fashioned for plusoptiX S12 (Nuremberg, Germany), Adaptica 2WIN in Kaleidos case (Padova, Italy) and the Rebion blinq (Boston, USA). Children were screened by each device and then Retinomax (Righton, Japan) befo

The goal of this study was to precisely and unambiguously identify foreign particles in human tissues using a combination of polarized light microscopy and Raman microscopy, which provides chemical composition and microstructural characterization of complex materials with submicrometer spatial resolution. This identification for patient care and research has been traditionally studied using polarized light microscopy, electron microscopy with X-ray analysis, and electron diffraction, all with some limitations. We designed a model system of stained and unstained cells that contained birefringen

The cauda epididymidis is the major sperm storage region whose androgenic supply, essential for the sperm viability, is provided by the vasculature and is dependent upon testosterone diffusion through the stromal tissue to reach the epithelial cells. We have focused our efforts on examining the regulation of this important epididymal region by evaluating the impact of the androgen disrupter cimetidine on the epithelial-stromal androgenic microenvironment. Male rats received 100 mg/kg cimetidine (CMTG) or saline (CG) for 50 days, serum testosterone levels were measured and the epididymal cauda

Gout is a common metabolic disease and is characterized by episodic acute and chronic arthritis caused by the deposition of monosodium urate (MSU) crystals in joints and connective tissues. The most commonly involved joint is the first metatarsophalangeal joint. It may also present with nonspecific complaints caused by gouty tophi in unusual sites of the body such as the spine, bone, and middle ear. Such involvements can be disabling and impair the quality of life. In this report, we describe the case of a patient who had complaints of hearing loss and otorrhea. A 34 year-old male patient pres

Calcium pyrophosphate deposition (CPPD) disease is an arthropathy caused by calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate (CPP) crystal deposits in articular tissues, most commonly fibrocartilage and hyaline cartilage. According to EULAR, four different clinical presentations can be observed: 1) asymptomatic CPPD; 2) osteoarthritis (OA) with CPPD; 3) acute CPP crystal arthritis; 4) chronic CPP inflammatory crystal arthritis. Acute CPP crystal arthritis is characterized by sudden onset of pain, swelling and tenderness with overlying erythema, usually in a large joint, most often the knee, wrist, shoulder, an

BACKGROUND: Talcosis, a granulomatous inflammation of the lungs caused by inhalation of talcum dust, is a rare form of pneumoconiosis. Besides inhalative occupational exposure, intravenous abuse of adulterated drugs is a major cause for this condition. Minerals such as talcum (magnesium silicate) and sand (predominant silicon dioxide) are used to increase both volume and weight of illicit substances. In intravenous heroin-abuse, talcosis is a well-known complication. Here we describe a case of talcosis caused by inhalative abuse of adulterated marijuana.

Talc is a hydrated magnesium silicate used in the chemical, ceramic, cosmetic, leather, paper and building industries. Interstitial lung disease - talcosis - due to exclusive talc inhalation is a rare form of pneumoconiosis. More often, pulmonary disease due to talc is encountered after intravenous administration of talc during drug abuse. Talc can contain asbestos or quartz particles which induce asbestosis or silicosis. Here we present a case report about a worker who was exposed to talcum during his work in tire manufacturing. During his lifetime an occupational disease was not recognised.

Talc is a mineral widely used in the ceramic, paper, plastics, rubber, paint, and cosmetic industries. Four distinct forms of pulmonary disease caused by talc have been defined. Three of them (talcosilicosis, talcoasbestosis, and pure talcosis) are associated with aspiration and differ in the composition of the inhaled substance. The fourth form, a result of intravenous administration of talc, is seen in drug users who inject medications intended for oral use. The disease most commonly affects men, with a mean age in the fourth decade of life. Presentation of patients with talc granulomatosis

BACKGROUND: Ultrasonic activated devices are currently used both for sealing of blood vessels and dissection of parenchymal organs. Recently, ultrasonic energy has been used to seal the cystic duct during successful clip-less cholecystectomy, but no study examined the mechanisms of tissue welding by ultrasonic energy or the biomechanical properties of the seal. This was the aim of our investigations.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Eight patients (7 women and 1 man, mean age 42+/-7 y) subjected to laparoscopic cholecystectomy had a cystic duct sealed and sectioned by Ultracision; after removal of the s

BACKGROUND: Prosthetic joint replacement is frequently used for the treatment of degenerative joint disease, rheumatoid arthritis, bone tumors and traumatic lesions. The prostheses contain such materials as titanium, cobalt and chromium. We describe a patient who, after total hip arthroplasty, developed an inguinal-pelvic mass. Fine needle aspiration revealed metallic particles, also seen on light microscopy in reactive pelvic lymph nodes. Ultrastructure was consistent with the presence of foreign particles, while energy dispersive x-ray microanalysis established the presence of chromium. To o

Deficiencies in different steps of purine metabolism give rise to a number of human inherited disorders. Lesch-Nyhan syndrome is a severe neurological disorder, caused by a deficiency in the purine salvage enzyme hypoxanthine phosphoribosyltransferase (HPRT). HPRT-deficient mice have been generated, but have proved to be an unsuccessful model of the human disease. We have suggested that this may be due to a greater dependency in rodents on the other purine salvage enzyme, adenine phosphoribosyltransferase (APRT). We have generated an APRT-deficient mouse line by gene targeting, with a phenotyp

We performed a histomorphological and morphometric analysis of the effects of short daily periods of micromotion and phagocytosable particles of high density polyethylene (PE) on bone ingrowth into a 1 x 1 x 5 mm canal within a titanium chamber in rabbits. The micromotion chamber (MC) was implanted in the tibia of nine mature New Zealand white rabbits. After osseointegration and first harvest of tissue, 40 micromotions (amplitude = 0.5 mm) were applied daily at a rate of 1 Hz for a 3-week period. The tissue within the chamber was then harvested. For the second treatment, PE particles (10(8)/mL

Kuru plaque is a pathognomonic feature in the brain of patients with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) and in the brain of CJD-infected mice. Kuru plaques from CJD-infected mice were immunolabeled with rabbit anti-murine prion protein (PrP) absorbed with human PrP, but not so with mouse anti-human PrP. Therefore, the murine kuru plaque is composed of the host (mouse) PrP and can be distinguished antigenically from human PrP. Immunostaining using the anti-murine PrP and formic acid enhancement on tissue sections revealed not only birefringent kuru plaques but also nonbirefringent diffuse and smal

Vascular expansive remodeling is involved in atherosclerosis/restenosis; however, its mechanisms need further investigation. Protein-disulfide isomerase (PDIA1), a redox chaperone from the endoplasmic reticulum and cell surface, supports vascular smooth muscle mechanoadaptation. Vascular injury repair reportedly associates with marked PDIA1 overexpression, while PDIA1 inhibition limits expansive remodeling. However, the effects of overexpressed PDIA1 in vessel remodeling are unknown. Here, we investigate the effects of transgenic constitutive PDIA1 overexpression (TgPDIA1) in carotid artery ex

The current intense study of ferroelectric nematic liquid crystals was initiated by the observation of the same ferroelectric nematic phase in two independently discovered organic, rod-shaped, mesogenic compounds, RM734 and DIO. We recently reported that the compound RM734 also exhibits a monotropic, low-temperature, apolar phase having reentrant isotropic symmetry (the IR phase), the formation of which is facilitated to a remarkable degree by doping with small (below 1%) amounts of the ionic liquid BMIM-PF6. Here we report similar phenomenology in DIO, showing that this reentrant isotropic be

Urochloa decumbens is an important forage grass for Brazilian livestock and is widespread throughout the national territory. Despite its nutritional properties, U. decumbens is one of the most common causes of hepatogenous photosensitization in cattle and sheep in the country, and poisoning in goats is extremely rare. This study aimed to report the epidemiology, clinical signs, and gross and microscopic lesions of an outbreak of U. decumbens intoxication in goats in Northeastern Brazil. In this study, we propose the characterization of a previously unreported subacute clinical condition, which
