A mucosal vaccine against Helicobacter pylori infection could help prevent gastric cancers and peptic ulcers. While previous attempts to develop such a vaccine have largely failed because of the requirement for safe and effective adjuvants or large amounts of well defined antigens, we have taken a unique approach to combining our strong mucosal CTA1-DD adjuvant with selected peptides from urease B (UreB). The protective efficacy of the selected peptides together with cholera toxin (CT) was first confirmed. However, CT is a strong adjuvant that unfortunately is precluded from clinical use becau

UNLABELLED: H. pylori is a well recognized pathogenic factor of chronic gastritis and class I carcinogen. Specimens are collected on gastroscopy performed due to clinical symptoms suggesting upper alimentary tract organic disease for pathomorphological examinations and for the estimation of the presence of H. pylori infection in urease test, histological examination in Giemsa staining method or in a culture. The aim of the project was to compare the detection of H. pylori in gastric mucosa in children by conventional method and polymerase chain reaction technique (PCR).

BACKGROUND: Duodenal ulcer (DU) is widely prevalent in India. Eradication of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is considered to be the most cost-effective first-line therapy for DU in patients without a historyof use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Western investigators recommend initial empirical anti-H. pylori therapy for such patients. However, in India similar recommendations are lacking due to the absence of appropriate clinical studies.
METHODS: An economic analysis for the management of DU with particular attention to H. pylori infection was performed using a decision analysis

BACKGROUND: Virulence factors of Helicobacter pylori are associated with peptic ulcer disease and may be also associated with bleeding peptic ulcers (BPU).
AIM: To determine whether H. pylori and/or the cytotoxin-associated gene (cagA) can increase the risk of bleeding in peptic ulcers.
PATIENTS: Sixty-seven patients were studied. Thirty had BPU, 20 had non-bleeding peptic ulcers (NBPU), and 17 were control subjects (NPU).
METHODS: The prevalence of H. pylori was assessed by the urease fast test, histological examination, serology, and 16S ribosomal RNA and cagA gene amplification by polyme

OBJECTIVE: It has been suggested that the oral cavity and dental plaque might be a reservoir for Helicobacter pylori (Hp). In this study, our aims were to detect the prevalence of Hp colonization in dental plaque and tongue scrapings of patients with chronic gastritis and to investigate the effect of systemic treatment upon this colonization and eradication of Hp from gastric mucosa.
METHOD AND MATERIALS: Eighty-one patients (49 men, 32 women) were included in the study. Dental plaque and tongue scraping specimens were obtained and assessed with Campylobacter-like organism (CLO) test, prior t

OBJECTIVE: The 13C-urea breath test (13C-UBT) is the method of choice in evaluating the success of therapy for eradication of Helicobacter pylori infection. For reasons of cost efficiency and practicability, urea dose and measurement duration have been reduced and the DOB (delta over baseline) cutoff level with the highest predictive value determined. Further, the efficacy of the modified 13C-UBT as a semi-quantitative test method was evaluated by comparison with histologically determined bacterial infiltration.
METHODS: In a prospective study, a modified 13C-UBT with reduced urea dose (75 mg

Activities of twelve hydrolytic enzymes in the digestive tract of young rabbits before weaning (4 weeks old) and adult rabbits (3 months old) were measured. The principal digestive enzymes in both groups of rabbits appeared to be amylase (EC 3.2.1.1), maltase (EC 3.2.1.20), pectinase (EC 3.2.1.15) and proteinases. The stomach of young rabbits contained most of the lipolytic activity and 45.7% of the total proteolytic activity of the digestive tract. The highest specific activities (per g digesta) of amylase, maltase and proteinase in young rabbits were found in the small intestine. Total activ

The close association between Campylobacter pylori (CP), gastritis and peptic ulcer is now well established. Moreover increasing evidence has been collected of a major etiological role of CP in type B chronic gastritis. For this reason, searching for CP is essential in all patients with upper gastrointestinal symptoms. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) is a most reliable technique for studying the distribution of microorganisms and their relationship to the gastric mucosal surface. The aim of this paper is to compare SEM to other routine methods of detection for CP, such as Giemsa staining on

Indwelling urinary catheterization can lead to the development of catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs), an important type of nosocomial infection, as well as other medical issues among institutionalized adults. Recently, Proteus mirabilis was highlighted as the important cause of CAUTIs. The pathogenicity of P. mirabilis is dependent on two multicellular types of surface colonization: the adherence and swarming motility. Adhesion, mostly mediated by fimbrial and nonfimbrial adhesins, is important for the initiation of biofilm formation. Moreover, the production of urease frequ

As an important biomarker for renal related diseases, detection of urea is playing a vital role in human biofluids on clinical diagnosis concern. In this work, a synthetic salicyaldehyde based imine fluorophore was synthesized using sonication method and conjugated with urease which was used as fluorescent biosensor for the detection of urea in serum samples. This enzyme based biosensor has shown a good selectivity and sensitivity towards urea with the linear range from 2 to 80 mM and the detection limit of 73 µM. The sensing response obtain is highly agreeing with existing analytical techniqu

Helicobacter pylori is the new-found cause of duodenal ulcers (DU), but acid secretion remains necessary and is elevated in DU patients. My group and others have asked whether H. pylori itself alters gastric physiology. This infection has been found to decrease local expression of the inhibitory peptide somatostatin, and to increase release of the acid-stimulating hormone gastrin. H. pylori infection can alter acid secretion in both directions. Acid disappears temporarily on first infection, and may dwindle later if H. pylori causes gastric atrophy. DU patients have approximately twice the nor

Campylobacter pyloridis infection of the stomach has been associated with gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer, nonulcer dyspepsia, and gastritis. The etiological role of C. pyloridis in most of those conditions remains unclear. We reviewed what is known about C. pyloridis infections in man. Considerable clinical data on C. pyloridis infections was available in older literature concerning gastritis and gastric urease. C. pyloridis causes a form of type B gastritis. In some individuals the acute infection is associated with abdominal pain and transient hypochlorhydria. C. pyloridis infection is diffic

Enterobius vermicularis typically affects children, while Helicobacter pylori is associated with chronic gastritis and peptic ulcer disease. Reports of E. vermicularis infection in geriatric patients are exceedingly rare, and recovery of the adult worm in stool specimens is unusual. We describe an 82-year-old male on long-term corticosteroids who presented with gastrointestinal symptoms. Stool microscopy demonstrated E. vermicularis, and H. pylori infection was confirmed by rapid urease test, PCR, and histopathology. The patient responded to Albendazole and standard H. pylori eradication thera

Arthrobacter woluwensis is a Gram-positive, aerobic Actinobacteria that is widely distributed in the environment worldwide. Little is known about A. woluwensis infection and it is commonly mis-identified by culturing with commercial kits. To date, only six cases of bacteremia caused by A. woluwensis have been reported in the literature. Herein, we report a case of Arthrobacter woluwensis bacteremia in an immunocompromised host. In this case report, the results of antimicrobial susceptibility testing showed that this clinical isolate of A. woluwensis is sensitive to vancomycin, teicoplanin, but

The design of the medicamental treatment of the patients with duodenal ulcer disease associated with Helicobacter pylori is presented. It allows, as it was shown by our investigations, quickly to eliminate the pain in pyloroduodenal and (or) in epigastric areas and to achieve an adhesion of duodenal bulb ulcers according to the research protocol in 6 weeks. The eradication of Helicobacter pylori on the data of the fast urease test was determined in 9 of 10 patients. For getting more complete information about possibilities of using the given design of the medicamental preparations in the treat

Campylobacter jejuni is the commonest cause of acute bacterial enteritis in the UK. However, in this case a 74-year-old lady underwent gastroscopy for an upper gastrointestinal haemorrhage and was noted to have a gastric ulcer. Gastric biopsy revealed spiral gram-negative bacteria and culture yielded a moderate growth of C. jejuni. Identification was confirmed by growth characteristics, biochemical tests and PCR amplification of the species-specific flagellin gene--fla A. To prevent misidentification, it is important that laboratories routinely culturing gastric biopsies for Helicobacter pylor

Among the patients subjected to esophoagogastroduodenoscopy because of different clinical indications, 108 were examined for the presence of Helicobacter pylori in the antral gastric mucosa. Microbiological analysis of the antral gastric mucosa biopsies were conducted by direct microscopy, the urease test and by growing in nutritious media. Positive findings were recorded in 38 (86.36%) patients with endoscopically diagnosed chronic gastritis, 29 (80.56%) patients with duodenal ulcer and 19 (67.86%) patients with ventricular ulcer. The majority of the positive findings were recorded by direct

The high endogenous urease activity of Campylobacter pylori was exploited in a non-invasive test for the presence of this organism in the stomach. When 13C-urea was administered orally after a test meal, urea-derived 13CO2 appeared in the respiratory CO2 of infected individuals at a constant rate for greater than 100 min. The test was validated in 26 individuals who underwent both the 13C-urea breath test and endoscopic biopsy of the antral mucosa for culture and histological examination. Each positive breath test proved to be correlated with a positive culture or Warthin-Starry silver stain o
