A two-year term aging test was carried out on a building limestone under different urban conditions in the city of Granada (Southern Spain) to assess its Cultural Heritage sustainability. For this purpose stone tablets were placed vertically at four sites with contrasting local pollution micro-environments and exposure conditions (rain-sheltered and unsheltered). The back (rain-sheltered) and the front (rain-unsheltered) faces of the stone tablets were studied for each site. The soiling process (surface blackening) was monitored through lightness (ΔL*) and chroma changes (ΔC*). Additionally at

Emerging evidence suggests that excessive exposure to traffic-derived air pollution during pregnancy may increase the vulnerability to neurodevelopmental alterations that underlie a broad array of neuropsychiatric disorders. We present a mouse model for prenatal exposure to urban freeway nanoparticulate matter (nPM). In prior studies, we developed a model for adult rodent exposure to re-aerosolized urban nPM which caused inflammatory brain responses with altered neuronal glutamatergic functions. nPMs are collected continuously for one month from a local freeway and stored as an aqueous suspens

BACKGROUND: Exposure to traffic-generated emissions is associated with the development and exacerbation of inflammatory lung disorders such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD) and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Although many lung diseases show an expansion of Proteobacteria, the role of traffic-generated particulate matter pollutants on the lung microbiota has not been well-characterized. Thus, we investigated the hypothesis that exposure to diesel exhaust particles (DEP) can alter commensal lung microbiota, thereby promoting alterations in the lung's immune and inflammatory

To identify potential sources of fine particles (PM2.5, with aerodynamic diameter (Da) ≤ 2.5 μm) in urban Dongguan of south China, a comprehensive campaign was carried out in the whole 2019. Hourly PM2.5 and its dominant chemical components including organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), water-soluble inorganic ions (WSIIs) and thirteen elements were measured using online instruments. Gaseous pollutants including NH3, HNO3, NO2, NO and O3 and meteorological parameters were also synchronously measured. PM2.5 was dominated by carbonaceous aerosols in summer and by WSIIs in the other season

Recent studies have suggested a potential association of particulate matter (PM) and noise with diabetes and obesity, but studies examining other environmental exposures and their sex-specific and joint associations remain limited. Therefore, we investigated sex-specific individual and joint associations of annual exposure to multiple environmental factors with diabetes and obesity-related measures using cross-sectional data from the population-based multi-center German National Cohort (NAKO). Outcomes included self-reported diabetes mellitus, body mass index (BMI), obesity (BMI ≥30 kg/m2), an

BACKGROUND: Traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) exposure causes adverse effects on wellbeing and quality of life, which can be studied non-invasively using self-reported symptoms. However, little is known about the effects of different TRAP concentrations on symptoms following controlled exposures, where acute responses can be studied with limited confounding. We investigated the concentration-response relationship between diesel exhaust (DE) exposure, as a model TRAP, and self-reported symptoms.
METHODS: We recruited 17 healthy non-smokers into a double-blind crossover study where they were

Understanding how aquatic organisms respond to complex chemical mixtures remains one of the foremost challenges in modern ecotoxicology. Although oil spills are typically high-profile disasters that release hundreds or thousands of chemicals into the environment, there is growing evidence for a common adverse outcome pathway (AOP) for the vulnerable embryos and larvae of fish species that spawn in oiled habitats. Molecular initiating events involve the disruption of excitation-contraction coupling in individual cardiomyocytes, which then dysregulate the form and function of the embryonic heart

Although current research supports associations between residential environment and inflammation and/or adiposity, evidence remains limited and partly contradictory for combined exposures, especially in vulnerable populations. To address this issue, this cross-sectional study, taking place in 2023 and 2024, investigated the associations between residential factors and adiposity and proinflammatory markers in 90 obese adults with metabolic syndrome from Bulgaria. All underwent clinical, anthropometric, and laboratory examinations, and completed a questionnaire. We measured their serum proinflam

INTRODUCTION: Digital public health governance needs to identify community-level health risks beyond data generated after residents enter medical-service settings. In this study, resident-side health information refers to resident-reported information on residential noise perception, sleep disturbance, and health behavior that can supplement medical-service data. Noise pollution is a frequently perceived environmental problem in everyday life, and China's source-based noise governance framework needs resident-side evidence on whether different noise sources correspond to different sleep-relate

Breast cancer is a significant global health concern, with millions of cases diagnosed annually. Risk factors for breast cancer include obesity, physical inactivity, poor diet, and alcohol use. Urbanization introduces exposures such as traffic-related air pollution (TRAP), which may impact breast cancer risk. To assess the impact of TRAP, measured in this study using nitrogen dioxide (NO2), on the risk of post-menopausal breast cancer we conducted a secondary analysis of baseline and follow-up data from the Alberta Tomorrow Project (ATP) cohort, linked to geographic data at the postal code lev

BACKGROUND: Urban environments are characterized by many factors that may influence children's energy balance-related behaviors (EBRBs), but there is limited research on the impact of prospective exposure to multiple urban factors in preschoolers. We evaluated prospective associations between various urban exposures and EBRBs in preschoolers across Europe, with EBRBs considered both individually and combined into lifestyle patterns.
METHODS: We used data from 4,073 preschoolers (aged 3-4 years) participating in three European cohorts from the EU Child Cohort Network: BiB (United Kingdom), EDE

To investigate photochemical ozone (O3) formation and provide localized control strategies, an intensive sampling of O3 and its precursors (i.e. volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and nitrogen oxides (NOx = NO + NO2)) were conducted at an urban site in Leshan, Sichuan province during 4-13 August 2019. The mixing ratios of O3, total VOCs (TVOCs) and NOx were 40.0 ± 5.3, 22.5 ± 2.6 and 14.6 ± 3.8 ppbv, respectively (±95% confidence intervals). O3 and its precursors existed a well negative correlation, indicating intensive local O3 formation. To further explore the O3-precursors relationship and o

Green space has a variety of health benefits. However, little is known about its impact on autism, the fastest-growing neurodevelopmental disorder in children. This study examined the relationship between green space and childhood autism prevalence. Autism count data in 2010 were obtained for 543 of ~560 public elementary school districts in California. Multiple types of green space were measured in each school district, including percentages of forest, grassland, and average tree canopy and near-road tree canopy. Their associations with autism prevalence were evaluated with negative binomial

BACKGROUND: More than half of the world's population lives in urban environments. Due to urban related factors (e.g. higher air pollution), urban residents may face higher risk of adverse health outcomes, while access to green space could benefit health.
PURPOSE: We explored associations between urban and green land-use and birth weight.
METHODS: Connecticut, U.S., birth certificate data (2000-2006) were acquired (n=239,811), and land-use data were obtained from the National Land Cover Database. We focused on three land-uses; urban space, urban open space, and green space (i.e. forest, shrub

Machine learning has the potential to support the growing need for high-resolution greenhouse gas monitoring in urban and industrial environments, where deploying extensive sensor networks is often limited by cost and operational challenges. This study presents a novel approach for estimating greenhouse gas (GHG) concentrations using routinely collected air quality and meteorological data from existing monitoring stations. Focusing on the Seoul metropolitan area in the Republic of Korea, we developed and evaluated three machine learning models - Random Forest, Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), an

The epidemiological research benefits from an accurate characterization of both spatial and temporal variability of exposure to air pollution. This work aims at proposing a method to combine the high spatial resolution of Land Use Regression (LUR) models with the high temporal resolution of fixed site monitoring data, to model spatiotemporal variability of NO2 over a wide geographical area in Northern Italy. We developed seasonal LUR models to reconstruct the spatial distribution of a scaling factor that relates local concentrations to those measured at two reference central sites, one for the

BACKGROUND: As one of the most common traffic-related pollutants, diesel exhaust (DE) confers high risk for cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. However, its impact on pulmonary vessels is still unclear.
METHODS: To explore the effects of DE exposure on pulmonary vascular remodeling, our study analyzed the number and volume of small pulmonary vessels in the diesel engine testers (the DET group) from Luoyang Diesel Engine Factory and the controls (the non-DET group) from the local water company, using spirometry and carbon content in airway macrophage (CCAM) in sputum. And then we construc
