OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated changes in ocular parameters in patients with progressive myopia receiving 0.01% atropine.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 35 children (18 girls, 51.4%; and 17 boys, 48.6%) aged 4-15 years. Among them, 20 (57.2%) had one myopic parent and 2 (5.7%) had both parents with myopia. Uveitis is the most common ocular manifestation of syphilis, while scleritis is rare. A case of nodular scleritis, peripheral keratitis and uveitis in a patient with genital ulcer is presented in this report. This patient had a clinical profile suggestive of syphilis, though the serology was negative for treponemal antibodies. Other possible differential diagnosis imitating syphilis are discussed.

We report a 23-month old girl who presented with bilateral epiphora who underwent bilateral lacrimal probing and syringing, during which a cocaine adrenaline solution was used. Two hours after the procedure she developed acute pulmonary oedema secondary to myocardial ischaemia. The patient was treated with intravenous glyceryltrinitrate and milrinone infusions; cardiac enzymes and left ventricular function normalised over the subsequent 72 hours. Topical administration of cocaine and adrenaline solution may have dangerous systemic cardiac effects and should always be used judiciously.

BACKGROUND: Many countries face the challenge of a rising number of patients with or at risk of developing glaucoma.
