Segmental odontomaxillary dysplasia: an unusual orthodontic challenge.

Segmental odontomaxillary dysplasia has only recently been delineated from other osseo-odontogenic dysplasias. Yet, this seldom-reported developmental abnormality might be diagnosed by a unique combination of clinical, radiographic, and histologic findings. Unilateral maxillary hyperplasia combined with displaced molars and unusual bone trabeculation is quite obvious at an early age. Recognition and subsequent reporting by dental specialists is encouraged to more clearly define the natural progression and the appropriate treatment of this abnormality.

Immunohistochemical localization of HLA-DR-positive cells in unerupted and erupted normal and carious human teeth.

Class II major histocompatibility complex (MHC) antigen-expressing cells are generally associated with the early phase of the immune response. We have studied the distribution of class II-expressing cells in developing, normal, and carious human teeth to clarify when human pulp acquires an immunologic defense potential and how this reacts to dental caries. Antigen-expressing cells were identified immunohistochemically by means of HLA-DR monoclonal antibody. In the pulp of unerupted developing teeth, numerous HLA-DR-positive cells were distributed mainly in and around the odontoblast layer. In

Arrested eruption of the permanent lower second molar.

The incidence of retention/impaction of the permanent lower second molar (M2inf) lies between 0.6/1000 and 3/1000. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to investigate the craniofacial morphology, the frequency of dental anomalies and the inclination of the affected M2inf and the adjacent first molar in patients with arrested eruption of M2inf. The overall goal was to elucidate the aetiology of arrested tooth eruption and to present the characteristics of these patients in order to improve diagnosis and treatment planning. Longitudinal in vivo observations on odontogenic keratocyst over a period of 4 years.

A case is presented of simultaneous adjacent odontogenic keratocyst and dentigerous cyst occurring in the same quadrant. Their in vivo behaviour, influence and effect on each other, surrounding tissues and on tooth development over a period of 4 years are described. This unique case may further advance the understanding of the behaviour of the odontogenic keratocyst in vivo.

Jaundice following oral surgery: Gilberts syndrome.

Jaundice developed in two patients following dental operations under general anaesthesia. Gilbert's Syndrome was established as the diagnosis. Caloric deprivation at the time of surgery resulted in the increased plasma concentration of unconjugated bilirubin. The pathogenesis of this not uncommon disorder and the mechanism of fasting hyperbilirubinaemia is discussed.

Evaluating success of autotransplantation of embedded/impacted third molars harvested using piezosurgery: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the success of autogenous transplantation of embedded/impacted third molars harvested using piezosurgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective pilot study enrolled 20 healthy patients with non-restorable first/second molars and a caries-free retrievable embedded/impacted third molar. Piezosurgery was used for removing inter-radicular bone at the recipient socket as well as for bone removal around the donor teeth. RESULTS: After an average follow-up of 16.4 months (SD = 1.9), 18 cases were successful with formation of periodontal ligament around the teeth. One tooth

Bilateral alveolar bone grafting: a report of 55 consecutively-treated patients.

A retrospective study was undertaken to evaluate the long-term results of bilateral alveolar bone grafting carried out at Great Ormond Street Hospital from 1983 to 1993. Fifty-five consecutive complete bilateral cleft lip and palate patients (36 males and 19 females) who had the operation were included in this study. The total number of cleft sites was 110. At the time of alveolar bone grafting, the mean age of the patients was 12.3 years with a range of 8.4-19.9 years. Cancellous bone from the iliac crest was grafted into the alveolar cleft areas. The cleft sites were studied in two groups ac

A study of the validity of a simulation of third molar eruption based on Markov modelling.

PURPOSE OF INVESTIGATION: The study was undertaken to examine the extent to which a model based on a Markov modelling process would simulate the eruption of lower third molars. BASIC PROCEDURE: A Markov process model was developed to model eruption of lower third molars using a 1-year time increment based on simulated eruption data relating to 100 lower third molars. This model was tested using a Monte Carlo simulation and compared with eruption patterns of 973 actual lower third molars. Statistical analysis of the differences between the simulated and actual groups was undertaken. MAIN FIND

Odontogenic Myxoma Associated to Unerupted Mandibular Molar in a Pediatric Patient: A New Case Description with Comprehensive Literature Analysis.

Background/Objectives: Odontogenic tumors in pediatric patients are uncommon; among all, the intraosseous occurrence of odontogenic myxoma is very rare, accounting for almost 8.5-11.6% of all odontogenic tumors in children. The radiological appearance is highly variable and is often responsible for the diagnostic delay and treatment. Methods: We report a case of odontogenic myxoma occurring in the posterior mandible of a 12-year-old female, found on a panoramic radiograph performed for the delayed eruption of the second inferior molar, treated by conservative surgery. A comprehensive analysis

Maxillary canine position of patients with non-syndromic craniofacial disorder: a retrospective evaluation of panoramic radiographs.

BACKGROUND: The study evaluates the position and displacement tendency of unerupted maxillary canines in orthodontic patients with non-syndromic craniofacial disorders (CD) compared to a control (C) group. METHODS: Canine position and displacement tendency were evaluated using panoramic radiographs (PAN) examined with parameters such as sector classification (sectors 1-5) and inclination angles (α and β). The displacement tendency was defined as the positioning of the tip in sectors 1 or 2, as well as its combination with increased angles (α > 30° and β > 39°). In addition, the correlation of

Histologic Features of External Cervical Resorption Affecting Impacted Maxillary Canines: A Report of 2 Cases.

Reports on the histopathologic features of external cervical resorption (ECR) in unerupted teeth are scarce. This article reports on 2 maxillary impacted canines from different patients that showed ECR lesions and were surgically removed and histologically evaluated. Case 1 showed symptoms associated with oral communication of the dental follicle and pulpal exposure. Radiographs and cone-beam computed tomographic imaging showed that resorption affected a large part of the root and the crown. Case 2 was asymptomatic, and the resorption cavity was restricted to the tooth crown. Both teeth were e

Accelerated enamel mineralization in Dspp mutant mice.

Dentin sialophosphoprotein (DSPP) is one of the major non-collagenous proteins present in dentin, cementum and alveolar bone; it is also transiently expressed by ameloblasts. In humans many mutations have been found in DSPP and are associated with two autosomal-dominant genetic diseases - dentinogenesis imperfecta II (DGI-II) and dentin dysplasia (DD). Both disorders result in the development of hypomineralized and mechanically compromised teeth. The erupted mature molars of Dspp(-/-) mice have a severe hypomineralized dentin phenotype. Since dentin and enamel formations are interdependent, we

Pathognomonic oral profile of Enamel Renal Syndrome (ERS) caused by recessive FAM20A mutations.

Amelogenesis imperfecta (AI) is a genetically and clinically heterogeneous group of inherited dental enamel defects. Commonly described as an isolated trait, it may be observed concomitantly with other orodental and/or systemic features such as nephrocalcinosis in Enamel Renal Syndrome (ERS, MIM#204690), or gingival hyperplasia in Amelogenesis Imperfecta and Gingival Fibromatosis Syndrome (AIGFS, MIM#614253). Patients affected by ERS/AIGFS present a distinctive orodental phenotype consisting of generalized hypoplastic AI affecting both the primary and permanent dentition, delayed tooth eruptio

Extraction of primary canine tooth buds: prevalence and associated dental abnormalities in a group of Ethiopian Jewish children.

Recent publications have described a common belief, held in rural areas in Africa, that unerupted primary canines cause diarrhoea, vomiting and fever in infants. To relieve these symptoms a traditional native healer extracts these tooth buds. The emigration of Ethiopian Jews to Israel in 1991 allowed an investigation of this practice among this community. A group of 59 children (27 boys and 32 girls) aged 3-12 years were examined clinically and radiographically. Evidence was found of extraction of 63 primary canine buds in 35 (59%) of the children. Extraction of one canine was found in 16 chil

Dental characteristics of a large military population useful for identification.

The number and complexity of dental restorations has decreased for younger Americans. Since the presence and extent of restorations are important data for forensic science identification purposes, the Computer-Assisted Postmortem Identification (CAPMI) system was used to assess the practical effect of the decreased selectivity expected as a result of improved dental health. Dental examination data from 7030 soldiers were recorded on optical mark read forms and entered into a database. The data were reorganized and analyzed to generate summary statistics about the incidence of each type of rest

Exposure of unerupted palatal canines: a survey of current practice in the United Kingdom, and experience of a gingival-sparing procedure.

Patients with impacted ectopic canines often present to Orthodontic and Oral and Maxillofacial units, with 85% being displaced palatally. Current orthodontic opinion suggests that the creation of adequate space ultimately allows the spontaneous eruption of most impacted canines, but we are often requested to operate to facilitate their eruption. There are several approaches, techniques that vary depending on whether orthodontically assisted or spontaneous eruption is expected. There are few publications that describe either the techniques or their merits. We have used a gingival-sparing techni
