Multiple cytokines in human tear specimens in seasonal and chronic allergic eye disease and in conjunctival fibroblast cultures.

BACKGROUND: Several cytokines are involved in the recruitment and activation of inflammatory cells in ocular allergic diseases. The purpose of the study was to assay multiple cytokines and chemokines in tears, to compare subgroups of allergic conjunctivitis (AC) with controls, and in culture supernatants to determine whether conjunctival fibroblasts produce some of these cytokines. METHODS: Fifty to one hundred microlitre tears were obtained from patients with active seasonal allergic conjunctivitis (SAC; n=12), vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC; n=18), atopic keratoconjunctivitis (AKC; n=6) a

Expression of gelatinase B in trachomatous conjunctivitis.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Gelatinase B is a matrix metalloproteinase involved in extracellular matrix (ECM) breakdown often associated with scarring and other pathological disorders. It was investigated whether gelatinase B is involved in the pathogenesis of ECM degradation associated with trachomatous conjunctivitis. METHODS: Conjunctival biopsy specimens obtained from six patients with active trachoma, six patients with active vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC), and seven control subjects were studied. Immunohistochemical techniques and a specific monoclonal antibody against human gelatinase B were u

Eosinophil surface antigen expression and cytokine production vary in different ocular allergic diseases.

BACKGROUND: The pathophysiology of chronic ocular allergic disease is not well understood. An eosinophil infiltrate is characteristic of such disease and eosinophil activity can be related to disease severity and to keratopathy, the most serious complication. Recently, eosinophils have been shown capable of cytokine production, particularly in allergic disease, although the disease-specific cytokine spectrum of tissue eosinophils is unknown. OBJECTIVES: We sought to determine eosinophil numbers (absolute numbers and percentage of total leukocytes), cell surface antigen expression, and cytokin

The role of conjunctival epithelial cells in chronic ocular allergic disease.

Recent evidence suggests that mucosal epithelial cells are capable of actively participating in immune reactions via expression of surface antigens, such as adhesion molecules, and synthesis of cytokines. This appears to be important in the pathophysiology of non-ocular allergic disorders. The objectives of the experiments were to compare the expression of HLA-DR, ICAM-I and pro-allergic cytokines in conjunctival epithelial cells in the different chronic ocular allergic disorders with each other and with normal subjects. Conjunctiva from normal patients (n=10) and patients with vernal keratoco

Therapeutic options in ocular allergic disease.

The term ocular allergy encompasses a group of diseases in which there is a high frequency of atopy, ocular itching, stringy discharge and a papillary conjunctival reaction. Conditions confined to the lids and conjunctiva (e.g. seasonal allergic conjunctivitis) have a good prognosis but those involving the cornea may result in visual impairment (e.g. atopic keratoconjunctivitis). Mast cell and eosinophil mechanisms are important in al the ocular allergies, but T cell inflammation is prominent only in vernal keratoconjunctivitis, atopic keratoconjunctivitis and giant papillary conjunctivitis. Molecular basis of photoinduced seasonal energy rheostasis in Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica).

Seasonal rhythms in photoperiod are a predictive cue used by many temperate-zone animals to time cycles of lipid accumulation. The neuroendocrine regulation of seasonal energy homeostasis and rheostasis are widely studied. However, the molecular pathways underlying tissue-specific adaptations remain poorly described. We conducted two experiments to examine long-term rheostatic changes in energy stability using the well-characterized photoperiodic response of the Japanese quail. In experiment 1, we exposed quails to photoperiodic transitions simulating the annual photic cycle and examined the m

Ocular allergy in the Asia Pacific region.

Allergic conjunctivitis (AC) represents a spectrum of disorders, comprising seasonal allergic conjunctivitis (SAC), perennial allergic conjunctivitis (PAC), atopic keratoconjunctivitis (AKC), vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) and giant papillary conjunctivitis. Of these ocular allergy types, SAC and PAC are the most common. The most striking difference within this group of ocular diseases is that SAC and PAC remain self-limited without ocular surface damage, while AKC and VKC can compromise the cornea, causing ulcers and scarring and can ultimately lead to vision loss. Data on AC in the Asia Pa

[Chronic (kerato-) conjunctivitis refractory to therapy in children].

BACKGROUND: Chronic conjunctivitis and keratoconjunctivitis account for a significant ocular morbidity. Early diagnosis and appropriate management are essential to avoid persisting structural damage and visual loss. In children, the correct diagnosis is frequently delayed because of the low individual experience with pediatric ocular inflammation, the uncommon clinical manifestations and the rarity of some conditions. This study aims to identify the problems associated with the diagnosis of chronic pediatric (kerato-)conjunctivitis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 48 consecutive tertiary referrals (med

Salzmann's nodular degeneration of the cornea: a review and case series.

Salzmann's nodular degeneration is a rare, noninflammatory, slowly progressive, degenerative condition. Bluish-white nodules raised above the surface of the cornea characterize it. It has usually developed in corneas with a history of phlyctenulosis, trachoma, vernal keratoconjunctivitis, measles, scarlet fever, and various other viral diseases. However, today the majority of cases have been seen without recognized previous keratitis. It is composed of dense irregularly arranged collagen tissue with hyalinization between epithelium and Bowman's layer or beyond. Manual removal, phototherapeutic
