BACKGROUND: Although Dega acetabuloplasty is widely used for the treatment of developmental dysplasia of the hip, there is a paucity of data on long-term outcomes. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the rate of residual acetabular dysplasia after Dega acetabuloplasty.
METHODS: Patients of a previously reported consecutive series of 35 patients (43 hips) operated by a single surgeon were recontacted for long-term follow-up. Of these, 25 patients (32 hips) consented, with a follow-up rate of 71% (74% of hips). The mean age at the time of surgery was 35 (18 to 65) months. The presence of r

Hip arthroscopy has become widely used for intra-articular lesions, such as labral tears and femoral acetabular impingement. However, its use in patients with developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) has been controversial and has historically demonstrated mixed results, as acetabular dysplasia may cause instability due to insufficient bony coverage of the femoral head, thus causing excessive stress on the repaired labrum and cartilage. We devised a combined hip arthroscopic labral repair and a less invasive open-shelf procedure using a small skin incision as an anterolateral portal in hip art

This investigation examined the validity of the hypothesis that the acetabulum in congenital dislocation of the hip will develop satisfactorily provided accurate congruous and concentric reduction is obtained as early as possible, and is maintained throughout growth. Seventy-two patients with eighty-five hips were studied. The children were more than one year old on admission and over ten years at the time of review. Acetabular development was assessed radiologically by measurement of the acetabular angle. Angles of less than 21 degrees were regarded as normal, and more than 21 degrees as indi

BACKGROUND: Patients with developmental dysplasia of the hip may require pelvic osteotomies to improve acetabular coverage. The purpose of this study was to compare the changes in acetabular version, tilt, and regional coverage angles following the San Diego acetabuloplasty (SDA), the modified San Diego acetabuloplasty (mSDA), and the Pemberton acetabuloplasty (PA).
METHODS: Fourteen patients with developmental dysplasia of the hip and computed tomography (CT) imaging were identified. From CT images, 2 identical pelvises were 3-dimensional-printed for each patient. Bone was printed with rigid

BACKGROUND: Adenoid cystic carcinoma of sublingual gland is a rare malignant tumor. When adenoid cystic carcinoma metastasizes to the acetabulum, it is highly challenging to choose a minimally invasive surgery. The treatment of acetabular metastatic tumors needs to not only maintain the original tumor treatment plan but also relieve pain and reconstruct the acetabular structure and mechanical stability. Therefore, the treatment of acetabular metastasis from sublingual gland adenoid cystic carcinoma is a complex issue.
CASE PRESENTATION: We treated a 72-year-old Han Chinese woman with acetabul

The aim of the study was to retrospectively review results of operative treatment for coverage deficit of femoral head in children with severe epiphysis displacement in Legg-Calvé-Perthes (LCP) disease. The material included 23 shelf acetabuloplasty procedures for LCP disease. The average age at diagnosis was 8.1 years (range 4-12). Mean follow-up was 5.8 years (range from 2.2 to 11.2 years). Mean Reimer's index decreased statistically significantly from a mean of 32% before surgery to 10.0% at the last follow-up (P < 0.00001). The mean Wiberg center-edge angle increased also statistically sig

Traditionally graft displacement following Pemberton and Dega acetabuloplasties involves internal fixation for treatment of developmental dysplasia of hip (DDH). This study was performed to assess the acetabular remodeling by conservative management of graft displacement among patients with DDH. This was a retrospective study of 20 patients 17 (85%) women and 3 (15%) men; mean age 22.90 ± 6.96 months with DDH who underwent Pemberton and Dega acetabuloplasties at King Khalid University Hospital, Riyadh between January 2013 and January 2018. All patients after losing acetabular correction during

AIMS: This study compared the long-term results following Salter osteotomy and Pemberton acetabuloplasty in children with developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). We assessed if there was a greater increase in pelvic height following the Salter osteotomy, and if this had a continued effect on pelvic tilt, lumbar curvature or functional outcomes.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We reviewed 42 children at more than ten years post-operatively following a unilateral Salter osteotomy or Pemberton acetabuloplasty. We measured the increase in pelvic height and the iliac crest tilt and sacral tilt at the most

We evaluated radiological hip remodelling after shelf acetabuloplasty and sought to identify prognostic factors in 25 patients with a mean age of 8.9 years (7.0 to 12.3) who had unilateral Perthes' disease with reducible subluxation of the hip in the fragmentation stage. At a mean follow-up of 6.7 years (3.2 to 9.0), satisfactory remodelling was observed in 18 hips (72%). The type of labrum in hip abduction, as determined by intra-operative dynamic arthrography, was found to be a statistically significant prognostic factor (p = 0.012). Shelf acetabuloplasty as containment surgery seems to be b

BACKGROUND: Avascular necrosis (AVN) and residual acetabular dysplasia are the two main complications of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) treatment. Although early reduction of the hip may decrease the incidence of residual dysplasia, it may increase the incidence of AVN and vice versa. However, we do not know if changes in surgical technique may lead to a modification in these outcomes.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: Does an incomplete periacetabular acetabuloplasty, as an added step to delayed open reduction, (1) diminish the risk of developing acetabular dysplasia; or (2) increase the rate of

BACKGROUND: Transtrochanteric anterior rotational osteotomy for osteonecrosis of the femoral head should be performed to obtain >34% of the ratio of transposed intact posterior articular surface to the acetabular weight-bearing area. Therefore, the presence of acetabular dysplasia is unfavorable in obtaining this ratio. Between 1999 and 2005, we performed the modified Spitzy shelf acetabuloplasty combined with anterior rotational osteotomy for three patients (four hips) with acetabular dysplasia. In this study, we retrospectively evaluated the midterm results of this combined surgery.

We describe three distinct types of congenital hip disease in adults. The first type is dysplasia, in which the femoral head is contained within the original true acetabulum. The second type is low dislocation, in which the femoral head articulates with a false acetabulum, the inferior lip of which contacts or overlaps the superior lip of the true acetabulum, giving the appearance of two overlapping acetabula. The third type is high dislocation, in which the femoral head has migrated superoposteriorly and there is no contact between the true and the false acetabulum. We describe and classify t

BACKGROUND: Shelf acetabuloplasty has been applied to secondary osteoarthritis of the hip due to congenital dislocation or acetabular dysplasia; however, there are few reports on the long-term outcomes of this operation. Here, we aimed to investigate the long-term effects of our shelf acetabuloplasty for developmental dysplasia of the hip in adults.
METHODS: Outcomes for 28 hips (7 with pre-arthrosis, 21 with initial stage of arthrosis) were retrospectively reviewed clinically and radiologically at a minimum of 20 years after operation. Mean age of the patients at operation was 34 years (rang

AIMS: Endoscopic shelf acetabuloplasty (ESA) has been reported as an effective approach to prevent the progression of borderline developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), typically utilizing autologous iliac bone graft (BG) to address acetabular bone defects. However, BG fails to restore articular cartilage. Autologous osteoperiosteal grafting has shown promising results in repairing osteochondral defects, yet its application in DDH remains unreported. This study aimed to verify the efficacy of autologous osteoperiosteal graft (OPG) in ESA for DDH treatment in a rabbit model.

BACKGROUND: Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is among the most common congenital musculoskeletal disorders and may lead to early hip osteoarthritis if left untreated. Modified Pemberton acetabuloplasty is an established, growth-preserving osteotomy technique for surgical correction in childhood. However, robust clinical long-term outcomes with follow-up periods exceeding two decades have not yet been published. The aim of this study was to retrospectively evaluate functional and patient-reported outcomes after an average follow-up of 25.6 years.
METHODS: In this monocentric retrospect

The natural history of Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease (LCPD) in children older than 8 years is usually poor without treatment. The treatment goal is to prevent deformity and incongruity of the hip by achieving a stable spherical femoral head in a deep, congruent, sharp-edged acetabulum, with a good range of hip movement at skeletal maturity. Lateral shelf acetabuloplasty in LCPD can increase the coverage of the femoral head, benefiting the remodeling of the femoral head and acetabulum. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of lateral shelf acetabuloplasty for severe LCPD in patients o

BACKGROUND Dega acetabuloplasty is commonly used to correct acetabular deficiency in children with developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) and cerebral palsy (CP). This retrospective study aimed to evaluate the clinical and radiographic outcomes following Dega acetabuloplasty in 11 children with DDH and 13 children with CP. MATERIAL AND METHODS We retrospectively analyzed 32 hips in 24 patients (8 males, 16 females; mean age, 61.35±41.09 months) who underwent Dega acetabuloplasty by a single surgeon between September 2015 and May 2019. The cohort included 11 patients with DDH (14 hips) and 13
