Traumatic ulcers and pain during orthodontic treatment.

In the present investigation the frequency of oral ulcers and pain in 161 orthodontic patients was recorded. Of all patients, 95% had experienced pain, but 84.5% said that the pain lasted a few days only. About 11% maintained that the treatment was constantly painful. Significantly more patients coming from private clinics complained of pain than those attending treatment at the Department of Orthodontics. About 50% said that activating or changing archwire was most annoying, whereas 28.7% said ulceration and 21% said headgear was the most annoying part of the treatment. According to 75% of th

Histomorphometric and biochemical study of osteoclasts at orthodontic compression sites in the rat during indomethacin inhibition.

Prostaglandins affect the number of osteoclasts at compression sites in orthodontic tooth movement. They may also have a role in tooth movement and influence the extent of root resorption. The purpose was to examine the effect of indomethacin on the activity of resident osteoclasts, recruitment of new osteoclasts and root resorption at orthodontic compression sites. Two separate populations of osteoclasts were studied: those resident at the sites after initial appliance activation and those recruited by a subsequent activation. Orthodontic appliances were activated to provide mesially directed

Therapeutic approach to Class II, Division 1 malocclusion with maxillary functional orthopedics.

INTRODUCTION: Interceptive treatment of Class II, Division 1 malocclusion is a challenge orthodontists commonly face due to the different growth patterns they come across and the different treatment strategies they have available. OBJECTIVE: To report five cases of interceptive orthodontics performed with the aid of Klammt's elastic open activator (KEOA) to treat Class II, Division 1 malocclusion. METHODS: Treatment comprehends one or two phases; and the use of functional orthopedic appliances, whenever properly recommended, is able to minimize dentoskeletal discrepancies with consequent imp

THE ORTHODONTIC APPLIANCES FOR TREATMENT OF OPEN BITE PROPRIETARY CONSTRUCTION.

In orthodontic practice, removable orthodontic devices are used to treat anomalies and deformations of the dentoalveolar apparatus during the period of the transition occlusion. The creation of new orthodontic appliances or the modification of existing appliances is actual today. The aim is to create easy-to-use therapeutical-prophilaxis orthodontic appliances that can be used to treat open bite and anomalies of the individual teeth position. The mechanism of action of the proposed appliance by P. Flis - V. Filonenko for the treatment of open bite (Ukraine's declarative patent No. 69548 for th

Celecoxib treatment does not alter recruitment and activation of osteoclasts in the initial phase of experimental tooth movement.

In a previous study, we reported that the short-term treatment with celecoxib, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) attenuates the activation of brain structures related to nociception and does not interfere with orthodontic incisor separation in rats. The conclusion was that celecoxib could possibly be prescribed for pain in orthodontic patients. However, we did not analyze the effects of this drug in periodontium. The aim of this follow-up study was to analyze effects of celecoxib treatment on recruitment and activation of osteoclasts and alveolar bone resorption after inserting an

Photoelastic analysis of stress distribution of surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion with and without separation of the pterygomaxillary suture.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate in vitro the mechanical effect over teeth and bone structures of surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion (SARME) in photoelastic analogs by observing stress produced during Hyrax-type and Haas-type appliances activation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two photoelastic analogs were fabricated by use of birefringent materials to simulate an adult skull that contained teeth, bone, and maxillary sinus. Hyrax-type and Haas-type appliances were applied to the anchor teeth and incrementally activated. SARME was simulated by subsequent cuts of the lateral

A Virtual Noninvasive Way of Constructing a Nasoalveolar Molding Plate for Cleft Babies, Using Intraoral Scanners, CAD, and Prosthetic Milling.

Presurgical nasoalveolar molding (PNAM) is a key step in the early management of cleft babies. It involves making an impression of the alveolar segments and the lip elements, after which an appliance is fabricated and activated to achieve optimal alveolar and nasal positions for a superior surgical result. These appliances are fabricated and activated in babies as young as 10 days, and the molding is ideally carried on till the baby is ready for the primary lip repair. This article outlines in detail a digital method of fabricating the PNAM appliance using a combination of intraoral scans, com

Treatment with Twin-block appliance followed by fixed appliance therapy in a growing Class II patient.

A girl, aged 11 years 4 months, with a skeletal Class II pattern and a severe overjet (10 mm) was treated with a Twin-block appliance. After 9 months of appliance therapy, the skeletal Class II was overcorrected. After 26 months of retention, when the occlusion was stable and the growth rate was diminishing, fixed orthodontic appliances using temporary skeletal anchorage devices were initiated. The total active treatment time with fixed orthodontic appliances was 30 months. Posttreatment records after 18 months demonstrated excellent stability: a functional occlusion and a pleasing facial bala

Effect of orthodontic appliance reactivation during the period of peak expansion in the osteoclast population.

BACKGROUND: Delays in the appearance ofosteoclasts at compression sites occur following orthodontic appliance reactivation when this is done during the period of osteoclast recruitment. This study examined changes in alveolar bone after appliance reactivation at a time coinciding with the peak expansion of the osteoclast population following the first appliance activation. METHODS: Orthodontic appliances were activated with 40 g on maxillary molars followed by a reactivation with the same force after 4 days in one group and sham reactivation in the other. Rats were killed at 0, 1, 3, 6, and 1
