A comparative analysis of DNA content and cell cycle phases in pleomorphic adenoma and carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyze the DNA ploidy profile of pleomorphic adenoma (PA) using flow cytometry, with a particular focus on its malignant transformation. STUDY DESIGN: Tissue samples were obtained from normal glands, primary and recurrent PA, and carcinoma ex PA (CXPA) (residual PA and malignant areas) for analysis. The data were analyzed using dedicated software and relevant increased literature resources. RESULTS: The study revealed a decline in the number of cells in the G1 phase and an increase in those in the 5cER phase in CXPA compared to their benign counterparts. CONC

Parapharyngeal parotid pleomorphic adenoma: a case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Parapharyngeal space (PPS) tumors are uncommon, accounting for 0.5%-1% of head and neck neoplasms. Diagnosis and treatment of parotid pleomorphic adenomas (PPA) extending to the PPS are difficult because the PPA is situated deep in the tissue. CASE PRESENTATION: A 49-year-old woman presented with a sore throat, odynophagia, and foreign body sensation in the throat for 6 weeks. Physical examination revealed a bulge in the oropharynx. Imaging revealed a clearly demarcated lesion in the right PPS of the neck. PPA diagnosis was confirmed using fine-needle aspiration c

Schwannoma-like pleomorphic adenoma: A pathological quandary.

Pleomorphic adenoma usually presents as a painless growing mass in locations of the salivary glands and is notorious for local recurrence if previous surgical resection is incomplete. Schwannoma is a benign peripheral nerve tumor with microscopic features of sheets of spindle-shaped cells with nuclear palisading. However, when a pathologist encounters a salivary gland tumor with microscopic morphological features of biphasic components with areas of schwannoma-like morphology, it is crucial to make a prudent diagnosis by differentiating Schwannoma-like pleomorphic adenoma and its differential

Pediatric Sinonasal Pleomorphic Adenoma: A Case Report.

While primarily observed in adults, this case contributes valuable insights into the manifestation and management of this benign salivary gland tumor within the pediatric population. This paper reports the first documented case of sinonasal pleomorphic adenoma in pediatric otolaryngology, presenting a unique perspective on this rare nasal tumor in a 9-year-old boy. The patient presented with progressive nasal obstruction and epistaxis and underwent a smooth endoscopic resection of a 2-cm pleomorphic adenoma on the right anterior nasal septum. The subsequent discussion covered background, histo

Lacrimal gland pleomorphic adenoma with extensive necrosis.

Lacrimal gland pleomorphic adenomas (LGPA) are benign mixed tumors. Diagnosis is based on clinical and radiological findings which usually prompts complete excision of the lesion to minimise recurrence and a cumulative risk of malignant transformation. Necrosis in pleomorphic adenoma has been rarely reported in salivary gland PA, either spontaneously or due to iatrogenic interventions. Necrosis is suggestive of a malignant process and makes interpretation of histology specimens difficult. A 23 year old woman, while awaiting biopsy for a mass in the left lacrimal gland, which had been symptomat

Surgical Management of the Palatal Pleomorphic Adenoma.

INTRODUCTION: Surgical excision is the basic treatment option of the palatal pleomorphic adenoma (PA), it is generally accepted to prevent for recurrence. The purpose of this study was to determine the decision criteria for the management of the palatal PA through evaluating the postoperative results of palatal PA correlation with the clinical appearance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All of patients were evaluated the mucosal ulceration, palatal erosion, and size with CT images in all 18 palatal PAs. The clinical features, surgical methods, and surgical results of these 18 PAs were reviewed. RESUL

Tracheal pleomorphic adenoma with coexisting pulmonary tuberculoma.

Tracheal tumors are rare and difficult to diagnose. Moreover, delays in diagnosis are very common because the symptoms are nonspecific. As a result, tracheal tumors are commonly mistreated as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or bronchial asthma. We report a case of a 49-year-old male who presented with a 3-month history of dyspnea and cough. Chest computed tomography scan showed a 1.5×1.3 cm homogenous tumor originating from the right lateral wall of the tracheobronchial angle into the tracheal lumen as well as a 0.5×0.4 cm round nodular lesion at the right upper lobe with multiple medias

Complications after superficial parotidectomy for pleomorphic adenoma.

BACKGROUND: The significance of complications after superficial parotidectomy remains unclear, since prospective studies are lacking. The aim of this study was to evaluate facial nerve dysfunction and other postoperative complications after superficial parotidectomy for pleomorphic adenoma of the superficial lobe and to identify the associated risk factors. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Prospective and descriptive clinical study on 79 patients undergoing formal superficial parotidectomy with the modified facelift incision, dissection of the facial nerve and reconstruction with the superficial musculo

Metastasizing pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland.

Salivary gland tumours are estimated to represent approximately 3% of all head and neck tumours. About 70-80% of these neoplasms occur in the major salivary glands, with the parotid gland being the most commonly affected site. The metastasizing pleomorphic adenoma (MPA) has histological characteristics of pleomorphic adenoma, but it has the capacity to generate local recurrences and distant metastases (mainly bones, lungs, and lymph nodes). Despite the fact that some authors consider it to be a benign neoplasia, the 2015 World Health Organisation (WHO) classification of head and neck tumours c

Recurrent Pleomorphic Adenoma of the Parotid Gland.

Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common type of salivary gland tumor and the most common tumor of the parotid gland. Because of its propensity for invasion, pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid requires superficial parotidectomy or total parotidectomy to minimize the risk of tumor recurrence. We report a case of pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland with repeated recurrences. A 23-year-old male patient presented with a protruding neck mass. Six years prior to this presentation, the patient had undergone superficial parotidectomy for the removal of pleomorphic adenoma of the right parotid gland

Recurrent Pleomorphic Adenoma of the Submandibular Gland.

Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is the most common benign tumor of salivary glands. Most PAs occur in the parotid (80%), followed by the submandibular gland (10%) and minor salivary and sublingual glands (10%). Submandibular gland PAs usually manifest in the submandibular area as a painless hard mass. Although several recurrent parotid gland PA cases have been reported in the literature, recurrent submandibular gland PA is quite rare. Complete surgical removal of tumor of the submandibular gland and keeping the capsule intact are important to prevent recurrence. Here we present a rare case of submand

Pleomorphic adenoma of the buccal salivary gland.

Salivary gland swellings can result from tumors, an inflammatory process or cysts. It can sometimes be difficult to establish; whether pathology arises from the salivary gland itself or adjacent structures. Neoplasms of the salivary glands account for less than 1% of all tumors, 3-5% of all head and neck tumors and benign pleomorphic adenoma (PA) of minor salivary glands arising de novo is very rare. PA is the most common tumor of the salivary gland. While the majority arises from the parotid gland, only a small percentage arises from the buccal minor salivary gland. A case of PA of minor sali

A rare case of nasopharyngeal pleomorphic adenoma.

Salivary gland tumors are rare. The majority of these tumors are benign and about 70% are pleomorphic adenomas (PA). Nasopharynx is an unusual site for the PA tumor. Only six cases are presented in the literature from 1990 to 2011. The diagnosis of this disease is linked to the sum of imaging tests, clinical and histological study of the mass of the above. The radiologic features of noninvasion of surrounding structures give the first clue to the benign lesion. From the review of the literature and our experience is identified as the gold standard in surgical treatment for this condition. Than

Pleomorphic adenoma: a rare intraoral pediatric tumor.

Minor salivary gland tumors are rare in the pediatric population. The most common minor salivary gland neoplasm is pleomorphic adenoma of the hard palate. We report a case of a 7-year-old patient presenting with a slow-growing palatal lesion, which upon diagnosis we confirm to be a pleomorphic adenoma. These lesions require radical excision with careful dissection due to risks of malignant transformation, pain, interference with dentition, and tumor seeding. Given the risk of recurrence, it is important that these patients be monitored long term following extirpation. Our patient remains recur

Giant pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland.

Pleomorphic adenomas are the most common benign tumors of the salivary glands. These adenomas generally present without pain and are slowly enlarged. However, they can reach enormous sizes, because they are often neglected by the patient and due to late diagnosis and intervention because of fear of surgery or sociocultural factors. This may lead to functional, aesthetic and social problems. In this article, we present a 55-year-old female patient with a giant pleomorphic adenoma in size of 15x15x20 cm, who presented with the complaint of a mass enlarged and swollen for 20 years in her left nec

Bronchial pleomorphic adenoma coexisting with lung cancer.

Pleomorphic adenoma usually occurs in the salivary glands but rarely in the trachea or bronchi. A 71-year-old man had abnormal shadows on a chest X-ray. Chest CT revealed one tumor in the right basal segment of the lung and another, in the left main bronchus. Bronchoscopic biopsy of the right tumor revealed well-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma. Right lower lobectomy and lymph node dissection were performed (pT2N0M0, stage IB). At the orifice of the left main bronchus, bronchoscopy identified a polypoid lesion nearly obstructing the airway. The lesion was resected with hot snare ablation

Recurrent pleomorphic adenoma: results of surgical treatment.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent parotid pleomorphic adenoma surgery increases the risk of facial nerve injury, and there is also a risk of ulterior recurrence. METHODS: Postoperative results from 62 consecutive patients operated for recurrent pleomorphic adenoma were analyzed. It was the first recurrence for 49 patients (79%), the second or more for 13 patients (21%). RESULTS: Total parotidectomy was performed in 69.4% of cases. Skin resection was performed in 47 patients (75.8%). Resection of a facial nerve branch was performed in seven patients (11.3%). Pathologic examination findings revealed carci
