"Aging at Home, Aging Better?": Examining the Relationship Between Aging in Place and Quality of Life Levels of Older Adults.

Population aging raises important questions about how older adults can remain in their homes and communities with dignity and support. This study examined the relationship between aging in place and quality of life among older adults in Türkiye. A correlational survey was conducted with 378 community-dwelling adults aged 65 and over in Burdur using the Aging in Place Scale (APS) and CASP-19 Quality of Life Scale. Women, rural residents, individuals without chronic disease, and those living with spouses or others reported higher APS scores. Quality of life was also higher among women, married p

From aging biology to cardiac biotechnology: emerging platforms for modeling cardiac aging.

Aging is a major contributor to cardiovascular disease and mortality in older adults. Yet most preclinical and experimental cardiac studies fail to account for age as a primary biological variable, leaving a critical gap in our understanding of how aging contributes to disease progression. Bridging this gap requires integrating aging biology, cardiac pathophysiology, and cutting-edge biotechnology to uncover the mechanisms underlying age-related cardiac dysfunction. We offer a new approach methodologies (NAMs) perspective on how emerging bioengineering strategies may reshape the study of cardi

LRRC8A in Aging and Aging-Related Diseases: Emerging Evidence and Therapeutic Potential.

The aging process is a major risk factor for numerous chronic diseases, and the progressive increase in global life expectancy has intensified the need to understand the molecular mechanisms underlying aging and age-related diseases. Volume-regulated anion channel (VRAC) plays a fundamental role in maintaining cellular homeostasis, among which leucine-rich repeat-containing protein 8A (LRRC8A) serves as the essential core subunit. Emerging evidence indicates that LRRC8A participates in diverse biological processes, including cell volume regulation, redox balance, metabolic homeostasis, inflamm

Aging in South Korea: the first penguin of the fastest aging nations.

South Korea is experiencing the world's most rapid demographic transition, having officially become a super-aged society in December 2024, with individuals aged 65 and older exceeding 20% of the total population. This shift-driven by record-low fertility rates and increasing life expectancy-presents unprecedented socioeconomic and policy challenges. This spotlight provides a critical overview of Korea's demographic shift and reviews 5 key issues related to population aging: (a) pensions and social insurance, (b) healthcare and caregiving, (c) employment and retention of older workers, (d) pove

Brain aging and neurodegenerative diseases: physiological insights from anti-aging protein Klotho.

Brain aging is accompanied by progressive disturbances in calcium signaling, mitochondrial function, redox balance, neuroimmune regulation, and barrier-fluid homeostasis, collectively increasing susceptibility to neurodegenerative diseases. Therefore, identifying physiological regulators that stabilize these interconnected processes is central to understanding brain aging. Klotho, an antiaging protein initially characterized by its systemic roles in mineral metabolism and lifespan regulation, has emerged as a key modulator of cellular and tissue homeostasis across multiple organs, including th

Choroid plexus aging: structural and vascular insights from the HCP-aging dataset.

BACKGROUND: The choroid plexus (ChP), a highly vascularized structure within the ventricles, is essential for cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) production and metabolic waste clearance, crucial for neurofluid homeostasis and cognitive function. ChP enlargement is seen in normal aging and neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's disease (AD). Despite its key role of in the blood-CSF barrier (BCSFB), detailed studies on age-related changes in its perfusion and microstructure remain limited. METHODS: We analyzed data from 641 healthy individuals aged between 36 and 90, using the Human Connectome Proj

Metabolites in aging and aging-relevant diseases: Frailty, sarcopenia and cognitive decline.

Aging shows biologically complex features with high individual variability, which reflects the exposure to several stimuli and the adaptation to them. Among them, metabolic changes are well observed as consequences or possible causes of aging. Calorie restriction extends organismal life span in experimental models. Several metabolites; for example, resveratrol or nicotinamide mononucleotide, are reported to mimic calorie restriction effects in vivo. Metabolomic research would be useful to evaluate metabolites as biomarkers in aging-relevant events and to identify metabolic regulation of aging.

Oral streptococci growth on aging and non-aging esthetic restorations after radiotherapy.

The aim of this study was to examine Streptococcus mutans biofilm growth on both aged and non-aged restorative dental resins, which were submitted to therapeutic irradiation. Sixty-four disks of an esthetic restorative material (Filtek Supreme) were divided into 2 groups: aged group (AG) and a non-aged group (NAG). Each group was subdivided into 4 subgroups: non-irradiated and irradiated with 10Gy, 35Gy, and 70Gy. The biofilms were produced by Streptococcus mutans UA159 growing on both AG and NAG surfaces. The colony-forming units per mL (CFU/mL) were evaluated by the ANOVA and the Tukey LSD t

Nutrition, cancer, and aging: an annotated review. II. Cancer cachexia and aging.

The interactions of cancer and malnutrition are discussed with the focus on aging. To establish whether the elderly are more likely to develop cancer cachexia and its complications, this review encompasses the pathogenesis of malnutrition in cancer; the age-related alterations of appetite, gastrointestinal function, energy expenditure, and protein turnover; the diagnosis of malnutrition; and the effectiveness of nutritional support in the elderly. Although metabolic and physiologic changes induced by cancer and age appear synergistic in causing cachexia, more frequent complications of malnutri

Aging Side by Side: Couples' Views of Aging and Health Over Time.

This study tested bidirectional, within-person associations between couples' self-perceptions of aging (SPA) and self-rated, cognitive, and mental health over time. Using a pooled sample of different-gender couples (N = 2,778 dyads) aged 50+ in the Health and Retirement Study across three waves (2008/2010, 2012/2014, 2016/2018), we employed dyadic random intercept cross-lagged panel models to separate within-person fluctuations from stable between-person differences while modeling cross-spousal associations. Findings revealed significant bidirectional within-person associations between individ

An Aging Clock Based on Immune Repertoire Features: COVID-19 Accelerates Aging.

Aging induces immunosenescence, a progressive decline in immune function underpinning age-related pathogen vulnerability, yet T/B cell receptor (TCR/BCR) repertoire remodeling during aging remains incompletely characterized, especially in non-European populations. Additionally, SARS-CoV-2 may perturb immune homeostasis and accelerate aging, but its impact on immune repertoire aging is unclear. Here, we analyzed leukocyte DNA from 195 healthy Chinese individuals (25-93 years) and 94 post-COVID-19 cases via CDR3 high-throughput sequencing. Aging correlated with shorter CDR3 sequences, reduced VD

From local to systemic: Spinal aging in the multi-organ aging network.

Spinal aging is a progressive degenerative process involving structural and functional decline of the spine as a whole and of its individual components, ultimately contributing to the development of degenerative spinal diseases (DSDs). Previous studies have largely focused on local spinal tissues or the intervertebral disc (IVD). However, recent advances in geroscience indicate that spinal degeneration is not an isolated local event, but is influenced by systemic aging through a multi-organ aging network. Accordingly, this review proposes a "from local to systemic" framework to better understa

Aging Concerns Related to Sexuality and Gender: HIV Prevention and Healthy Aging.

Healthy aging is an important area of research across many populations, but less work has focused on this area among sexual and gender diverse individuals relative to the general population. On the whole, it is known that as the U.S. population ages, increasing attention is needed to understand the intersections between aging, health, and wellbeing. One area of consideration to address in regard to healthy aging is that of HIV prevention, in particular, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use. For the current study we assessed these factors in a cross-sectional survey designed to assess disease st

Renal aging and its consequences: navigating the challenges of an aging population.

With the aggravation of population aging, kidney aging and its impact on health have been widely concerned. Renal aging not only involves structural and functional changes but also is significantly linked to the occurrence and progression of some kidney diseases. Mechanisms of renal aging include oxidative stress, reduced Klotho levels, cellular senescence, and chronic inflammation. These changes lead to a sustained reduction in renal filtration, reabsorption, secretion, as well as endocrine function, which in turn affects overall health. Renal structural changes mainly include glomerulosclero

DoliClock: a lipid-based aging clock reveals accelerated aging in neurological disorders.

Aging is a multifaceted process influenced by intrinsic and extrinsic factors, with lipid alterations playing a critical role in brain aging and neurological disorders. This study introduces DoliClock, a lipid-based biological aging clock designed to predict the age of the prefrontal cortex using post-mortem lipidomic data. Significant age acceleration was observed in autism, schizophrenia, and Down syndrome. Additionally, an increase in entropy around age 40 suggests dysregulation of the mevalonate pathway and dolichol accumulation. Dolichol, a lipid integral to N-glycosylation and intracellu

Suppression of FOXO1 attenuates inflamm-aging and improves liver function during aging.

The liver is a key metabolic organ that maintains whole-body nutrient homeostasis. Aging-induced liver function alterations contribute to systemic susceptibility to aging-related diseases. However, the molecular mechanisms of liver aging remain insufficiently understood. In this study, we performed bulk RNA-Seq and single-cell RNA-Seq analyses to investigate the underlying mechanisms of the aging-induced liver function changes. We found that liver inflammation, glucose intolerance, and liver fat deposition were aggravated in old mice. Aging significantly increased pro-inflammation in hepatic m

Taste loss and aging.

BACKGROUND: There is a certain degree of "redundancy" in the taste system to maintain a stable whole-mouth taste sensation. However, as the compensatory redundancy of the taste system becomes inadequate to offset age related structural and functional deterioration, older adults exhibit heightened vulnerability to taste impairment. SUMMARY: Taste thresholds of older people have an upward trend. At suprathreshold levels, older people tend to be less sensitive to the changes of the concentration of tastants. The taste identification capacity also tends to decrease as aging. The extent of age-rel
