Antibiotic Residues in Animal Products from Some African Countries and Their Possible Impact on Human Health.

This review investigates the levels of antibiotic residues in animal products, types of antibiotics, and their possible impact on human health in Africa. The literature search involved the use of a systematic survey using data that were published from Africa from 2015 to 2024. The search terms used the Boolean operators with keywords such as antibiotics, antibiotic residues, antibiotics in animal products in Africa, and impact on human health. Only research conducted in Africa was used in the present study. The findings showed that the most prevalent groups of antibiotic residues were aminogly

Development of a complex 3D in vitro alternative model to evaluate the safety of advanced materials.

Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) i.e., liver damage caused by pharmaceutical and other chemical substances, represents a significant clinical challenge in both its diagnosis and treatment, with DILI remaining a major factor in drug attrition and market withdrawal, accounting for approximately 50 % of reported cases of acute liver failure. For decades, conventional in vitro two-dimensional (2D) monolayer cultures and in vivo animal models have been the gold standard in preclinical studies of DILI. However, these models exhibit critical limitations in the accurate replication of metabolic functi

Progress in cell based assays for botulinum neurotoxin detection.

Botulinum neurotoxins (BoNTs) are the most potent human toxins known and the causative agent of botulism, and are widely used as valuable pharmaceuticals. The BoNTs are modular proteins consisting of a heavy chain and a light chain linked by a disulfide bond. Intoxication of neuronal cells by BoNTs is a multi-step process including specific cell binding, endocytosis, conformational change in the endosome, translocation of the enzymatic light chain into the cells cytosol, and SNARE target cleavage. The quantitative and reliable potency determination of fully functional BoNTs produced as active

Harnessing microbial modulators to mitigate antibiotic-induced gut dysbiosis: from phytochemicals to faecal microbiota transplantation.

Antibiotics remain indispensable for the management of infectious diseases; however, their use inevitably perturbs the gut microbiota. Advances in metagenomics and multiomics approaches have demonstrated that antibiotic exposure profoundly disrupts microbial diversity and community structure, leading to the depletion of key commensals, the expansion of opportunistic pathogens, metabolic dysfunction, and the emergence of antimicrobial resistance. These alterations are increasingly associated with a broad spectrum of dysbiosis-related diseases (DRDs), encompassing metabolic, neuropsychiatric, an

Phytogenic feed additives as alternatives to antibiotics in poultry production: A review.

The overuse of antimicrobials in food-producing animals, particularly poultry, has led to growing concerns about multidrug microbial resistance, posing significant risks to both animal and human health. Subtherapeutic doses of antibiotics have traditionally been used to enhance growth and improve economic efficiency in poultry farming. However, these practices have facilitated the emergence of resistant microbial strains, threatening global health security and prompting a search for sustainable alternatives. This review highlights the significance of phytogenic as feed additives (PFAs) as prom

Antimicrobial promotion of pig growth is associated with tissue-specific remodeling of bile acid signature and signaling.

The spread of bacterial resistance to antimicrobials (AMA) have intensified efforts to discontinue the non-therapeutic use of AMA in animal production. Finding alternatives to AMA, however, is currently encumbered by the obscure mechanism that underlies their growth-promoting action. In this report, we demonstrate that combinations of antibiotics and zinc oxide at doses commonly used for stimulating growth or preventing post-weaning enteritis in pigs converge in promoting microbial production of bile acids (BA) in the intestine. This leads to tissue-specific modifications in the proportion of

Toward clinically relevant automated corneal biomanufacturing with human-derived FBS alternatives.

The replacement of animal-derived components from cell culture protocols is essential for the development of human-compatible and clinically translatable systems. Fetal bovine serum (FBS) is still widely used for cell expansion, although its xenogeneic origin and batch variability limit regulatory compliance. In this study, human platelet lysate (hPL) and human serum (HS) were assessed as low-serum (2%) alternatives to FBS during the subculture phase of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (BM-MSC) prior to keratocyte differentiation for corneal tissue engineering. BM-MSC were gradual

The Anti-Inflammatory and Immunomodulatory Activities of Natural Products to Control Autoimmune Inflammation.

Inflammation is an integral part of autoimmune diseases, which are caused by dysregulation of the immune system. This dysregulation involves an imbalance between pro-inflammatory versus anti-inflammatory mediators. These mediators include various cytokines and chemokines; defined subsets of T helper/T regulatory cells, M1/M2 macrophages, activating/tolerogenic dendritic cells, and antibody-producing/regulatory B cells. Despite the availability of many anti-inflammatory/immunomodulatory drugs, the severe adverse reactions associated with their long-term use and often their high costs are impedi

Soil-Borne Nematodes: Impact in Agriculture and Livestock and Sustainable Strategies of Prevention and Control with Special Reference to the Use of Nematode Natural Enemies.

Soil-borne parasitic nematodes cause severe deterioration in the health of crops and supply animals, leading to enormous economic losses in the agriculture and livestock industry worldwide. The traditional strategy to control these parasites has been based on chemically synthesised compounds with parasiticidal activity, e.g., pesticides and anthelmintic drugs, which have shown a negative impact on the environment. These compounds affect the soil's beneficial microbiota and can also remain as toxic residues in agricultural crops, e.g., fruits and legumes, and in the case of animal products for

Detection of developmental toxicity of the anti-COVID-19 drug molnupiravir using gastruloid-based in vitro assays.

In pharmaceutical drug development, animal tests are traditionally required to conduct comprehensive toxicity assessments before initiating human clinical trials. However, animal tests are time-consuming and can hinder the rapid development of drugs needed to combat urgent health crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, faster non-animal alternatives are critical to accelerating preclinical toxicity assessments. Molnupiravir, an antiviral medication authorized for emergency use to treat COVID-19, is an oral pro-drug that is metabolized into its active form, N4-hydroxycytidine (NHC). T

What's in a name? Examining the confusion of meat-like terminology on meat imitating plant-based products.

Meat alternatives are becoming increasingly popular amongst consumers. The names on these products, specifically the use of meat-like designations on non-animal products, remains a major point of contention. The aim of this study was to investigate whether meat-like vs. non-meat-like names are potentially confusing or even misleading. In this study, a categorisation task was used where participants classified products as animal-based or plant-based. Our results show that the presence of a meat-like name on a meat alternative label leads to significantly more mistakes when classifying a product

The activity of methacrylate esters in skin sensitisation test methods: A review.

Skin sensitisation associated with allergic contact dermatitis is an important occupational and environmental disease. The identification of skin sensitisation hazards was traditionally performed using animal tests; originally guinea pig assays and subsequently the murine local lymph node assay (LLNA). More recently there has, for a variety of reasons, been an increased interest in, and requirement for, non-animal assays. There are now available both validated in vitro assays and a variety of approaches based on consideration of quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSAR). With the in

Zoonotic Diseases and Phytochemical Medicines for Microbial Infections in Veterinary Science: Current State and Future Perspective.

Diseases caused by bacterial infections in small-scale and industrial livestock are becoming serious global health concern in veterinary science. Zoonotic bacteria, including Staphylococcus, Campylobacter, and Bartonella species, that infect animals and humans cause various illnesses, such as fever, diarrhea, and related complications. Bacterial diseases in animals can be treated with various classes of antibiotics, including fluoroquinolones, beta-lactams, aminoglycosides, and macrolides. However, the overuse and misuse of antibiotics have led to drug resistance in infectious agents, e.g., me

Nothing is perfect, not even the local lymph node assay: a commentary and the implications for REACH.

For many regulatory authorities, the local lymph node assay (LLNA) is the preferred assay for the predictive identification of skin-sensitizing chemicals. It is the initial requirement for sensitization testing within the new REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemical substances) regulations in the European Union. The primary reasons for the preferment of the LLNA are the animal welfare benefits it provides compared with traditional guinea-pig methods (refinement and reduction of animal usage) and the general performance characteristics of the assay with regard

Porcine-derived materials in urology Practical ethical guidance for caring for Muslim and Jewish patients.

INTRODUCTION: Porcine-derived materials are used widely in urology, including hemostatic agents, acellular dermal matrices, sutures, bulking agents, and several anticoagulant medications. Although clinically effective, their animal origin is rarely discussed during preoperative counseling or routine prescribing. For many patients whose religious or ethical values influence medical decision-making, this information is meaningful even when use is permitted. Islamic jurisprudence (Fiqh) and Jewish law (Halakhah) generally allow porcine-derived medical products when medically necessary, but many p

Chronic Intestinal Disorders in Humans and Pets: Current Management and the Potential of Nutraceutical Antioxidants as Alternatives.

Chronic intestinal disorders (CID) are characterized by persistent, or recurrent gastrointestinal (GI) signs present for at least three weeks. In human medicine, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a group of chronic GI diseases and includes Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). On the other hand, the general term chronic enteropathies (CE) is preferred in veterinary medicine. Different therapeutic approaches to these diseases are used in both humans and pets. This review is focused on the use of traditional therapies and nutraceuticals with specific antioxidant properties, for the

Current Status of Angiogenic Cell Therapy and Related Strategies Applied in Critical Limb Ischemia.

Critical limb ischemia (CLI) constitutes the most severe form of peripheral arterial disease (PAD), it is characterized by progressive blockade of arterial vessels, commonly correlated to atherosclerosis. Currently, revascularization strategies (bypass grafting, angioplasty) remain the first option for CLI patients, although less than 45% of them are eligible for surgical intervention mainly due to associated comorbidities. Moreover, patients usually require amputation in the short-term. Angiogenic cell therapy has arisen as a promising alternative for these "no-option" patients, with many stu
