Central NPY-Y5 sub-receptor partially functions as a mediator of NPY-induced hypothermia and affords thermotolerance in heat-exposed fasted chicks.

Exposure of chicks to a high ambient temperature (HT) has previously been shown to increase neuropeptide Y (NPY) mRNA expression in the brain. Furthermore, it was found that NPY has anti-stress functions in heat-exposed fasted chicks. The aim of the study was to reveal the role of central administration of NPY on thermotolerance ability and the induction of heat-shock protein (HSP) and NPY sub-receptors (NPYSRs) in fasted chicks with the contribution of plasma metabolite changes. Six- or seven-day-old chicks were centrally injected with 0 or 375 pmol of NPY and exposed to either HT (35 ± 1°C)

What Factors Are Associated With Femoral Component Internal Rotation in TKA Using the Gap Balancing Technique?

BACKGROUND: When using the gap-balancing technique for TKA, excessive medial release and varus proximal tibial resection can be associated with internal rotation of the femoral component. Previous studies have evaluated the causes of femoral component rotational alignment with a separate factor analysis using unadjusted statistical methods, which might result in treatment effects being attributed to confounding variables. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) What pre- and intraoperative factors are associated with internal rotation of the femoral component in TKA using the gap balancing technique? (2) To

Neuroimmune mechanisms of the gut-brain axis in treatment-resistant depression: Implications for microbiome-based therapeutic strategies.

Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) represents a major clinical challenge characterised by inadequate response to conventional antidepressant therapies and high relapse rates. Emerging evidence suggests that TRD may extend beyond monoaminergic dysfunction and may involve dysregulation of the HPA axis, neuroinflammation, impaired neuroplasticity, and disruption of the gut-brain axis (GBA). Gut dysbiosis has been associated with treatment resistance through alterations in monoamine turnover, immune signalling, intestinal barrier integrity, and drug-microbiome interactions affecting antidepressa

Duck-egg white hydrolysate supplementation enhances muscle endurance and fatigue resistance during high-intensity exercise.

Recent processing advances, including separating and marinating duck yolks, provide alternatives to traditional salted duck eggs. However, separated duck-egg white remains a nutritious agricultural byproduct due to its unpleasant odor and low consumer acceptance. Duck-egg white hydrolysates (DEWHs), produced by protease-A hydrolysis, are rich in branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) and imidazole dipeptides like carnosine and anserine. In mice undergoing high-intensity exercise, DEWH supplementation increased hindlimb muscle mass, soleus-muscle-fiber size, and performance in swimming and treadmil

High-fat diet-induced osteoporosis in mice under hypoxic conditions.

In the context of global aging, osteoporosis has emerged as a significant public health concern, with a relatively high prevalence observed in plateau regions. This study aimed to investigate the effects and underlying mechanisms of high-fat diet (HFD) and hypoxic conditions on bone metabolism in mice. The mice were subjected to different dietary regimens (a HFD versus a normal diet) and placed in a hypoxic environment. This study explored relevant mechanisms through comprehensive assessments, including body and bone morphological indices, pathological examinations, biochemical analyses, evalu

Dietary OPL-rich structured lipid modulates the nutritional characteristics of developing muscle and is associated with lipid and amino acid metabolic changes in juvenile largemouth bass.

1-Oleoyl-2-palmitoyl-3-linoleoylglycerol (OPL) is a representative sn-2 palmitate-containing triacylglycerol (TAG) relevant to human milk fat and early-life lipid nutrition. However, whether dietary OPL-rich structured lipid affects developing muscle nutritional characteristics and associated metabolic features remains unclear. In this study, juvenile largemouth bass were used as a developmental model to compare dietary OPL-rich oil with a mixed oil (MO), which had a similar total fatty acid composition but a lower sn-2 palmitate content. Dietary OPL-rich structured lipid significantly increas

Visible/near infrared spectroscopy in muscle beef analysis: How device choice and sampling affect prediction accuracy.

This study evaluated the performance of two portable spectral devices (visible: Vis; near-infrared: NIR) and one benchtop combined Vis/NIR instrument for predicting beef biochemical traits related to meat quality. A total of 497 muscle samples were collected from 55 fattening farms across five European countries. Reference values were obtained exclusively from pooled samples. For the benchtop device, two sampling strategies were compared: 1) direct scanning of pooled samples (n = 99) used for reference analyses, and 2) scanning individual samples followed by spectral averaging to match pooled

Rapid separation and quantification of imidazole dipeptides in meats using a PBr column packed with 3-(pentabromobenzyloxy)propyl group modified silica gel.

Meats are rich in imidazole dipeptides (IDPs) such as carnosine, anserine, and balenine, known for their antioxidant and antifatigue properties. The concentrations and types of these IDPs vary significantly among different animal species, necessitating a quantitative method for the precise measurement of individual IDPs. Simultaneous analysis of multiple compounds is typically conducted using reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC). However, C18 columns, which are commonly employed in RP-HPLC, fail to adequately retain highly hydrophilic IDPs, making separation and quan

Novel metabolic disturbances in marginal vitamin B6-deficient rat heart.

Vitamin B6 deficiency is associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD). Although plasma biomarkers have been proposed, no studies have yet directly profiled heart tissue, and the mechanisms have to be fully defined. Thus, in order to provide better insight into vitamin B6-deficient effects on cardiac functions, we sought to identify the metabolic profile in heart tissue consequent to change in dietary vitamin B6 levels by applying metabolomics. Heart tissues of rats fed a basal diet containing a marginal vitamin B6-deficient, vitamin B6-recommended or vitamin B6-supplemented level were analyzed
