From August 1989 to October 1990, 83 pregnant Chinese women were the subjects for measuring the levels of plasma functional antithrombin III (AT III) activity. The correlations of AT III activity with perinatal outcome and the changes in maternal hepatorenal function were analyzed. The population was divided into four groups: Group I (n = 30), normal pregnancies; Group II (n = 23), mild pre-eclampsia; Group III (n = 26), severe pre-eclampsia; and Group IV (n = 4), eclampsia. The results demonstrated that: 1) AT III activity decreased with the severity of toxemia (p < 0.001), 2) AT III activity

BACKGROUND: We report a heterozygous case of familial qualitative deficiency of antithrombin III associated with cerebral infarction.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 33-year-old man had a history of recurrent transient ischemic attacks from the age of 28. Cerebral computed tomography at age 29 disclosed a low-density area in the left frontal lobe, and an internal carotid angiogram showed branch occlusion of the right anterior cerebral artery and stenosis of the left middle cerebral artery. Occlusion of the right middle cerebral artery developed thereafter. The plasma antithrombin III antigen concentratio

Antithrombin III is an anticoagulant synthesized in the liver cells. The aim of this study was to estimate the serum level of antithrombin III in cirrhotics. Investigations were carried out in 32 patients with cirrhosis and in 20 healthy controls. Antithrombin III measured by radial immunodiffusion was found significantly lower (19.2 +/- 6.8 mg%) than in controls (28.0 +/- +/- 5.2 mg%) (p less than 0.01). The level of antithrombin III is positively correlated with pseudo-cholinesterase and, less significantly with blood albumin. Therefore decreased antithrombin III reflects liver cell disfunct

A qualitative defect of antithrombin III (AT III) was demonstrated in four members of a large Tunisian family by the discrepancy between a normal amount of antigen and decreased or absent heparin cofactor activity. The propositus, a 3-year-old girl, died from massive intracardiac thrombosis despite oral anticoagulant therapy. Heparin cofactor activity measured in the presence of thrombin or F. Xa was undetectable in her plasma. Anti-F. Xa activity was also absent when using low molecular weight heparin or a synthetic pentasaccharide, representing the binding site to AT III. The lack of affinit

Deficiency of Antithrombin III (AT III), which is one of the main inhibitors of blood coagulation, may lead to severe thrombosis and embolism. The authors detected AT III deficiency in two patients with retinal vessel occlusion. Both patients were otherwise healthy. One had recurrent retinal vein thrombosis, the other cilioretinal occlusion. To the authors' knowledge, only one case of retinal vessel occlusion with AT III deficiency has been reported in literature. Furthermore, in the patients reported here retinal vessel occlusion may have been caused by AT III deficiency, which has considerab

Antithrombin-(AT)-III-levels from 22 patients were determined at the day of delivery but also at the first and fifth day post partum. 7 patients had an AT-III-level in a pathologically low range. Furthermore we found a close correlation between the degree of seriousness of gestosis and AT-III-reduction as well as hypercoagulolability expressed in an elevated normotest. With two patients serious complications arised intra- and postoperatively. One patient got a coagulopathy during the sectio, the other patient developed in spite of heparin treatment a deep thrombosis in the leg vein. These wome

When compared to 40 control subjects and to 13 patients with mitral stenosis (8 of them commissurotomized) antithrombin III (AT III) activity, assessed by a clotting technique, was found to be slightly but significantly depressed in the 18 patients with prosthetic valves in mitral position. Decrease of AT III level occurred mainly in patients with metallic Björk-Shiley prostheses in whom mitral valve replacement had been performed more than 12 months before the investigation. Particularly low AT III activities were noted in the three patients who developed thromboembolic complications with let

In a prospective study plasma AT III was determined in 2423 samples obtained from 653 women during pregnancy and post partum. The women were allocated to groups, according to the highest diastolic blood pressure, in the third trimester. AT III levels were normal throughout pregnancy, during labour and after vaginal delivery, except in 57 women with pregnancy induced or aggravated hypertension. We present evidence that AT III depression in pre-eclampsia is caused by increased consumption. AT III levels correlate with maternal morbidity as revealed by hepatorenal damage. A weak but significant c

Presented herein is a case report of a 20-year-old woman with a past history of oral contraceptive use who developed Budd-Chiari syndrome. Onset of her illness was abrupt and stormy, simulating fulminant viral hepatitis or toxic hepatic injury. She died within six months of her initial presentation. Although the patient discontinued the use of oral contraceptives two years prior to the initial presentation of the disease, the morphologic features of the venous thrombosis and hepatic damage were indicative of a chronic, ongoing process of longer than six months' duration, thus raising the possi

Two cases of acute aortic thrombosis, a previously unreported complication of antithrombin III deficiency, are reported. Both patients had abnormally low antithrombin III levels, which improved to normal levels with warfarin ;sodium therapy. The possibility of antithrombin III deficiency should be considered in young patients with acute arterial thrombosis.

We report a newborn male who presented with severe central cyanosis on the third day of life. Partial thrombotic obstruction of the pulmonary trunk secondary to Antithrombin III (homozygous defect of heparin binding site) deficiency was subsequently diagnosed. Surgical thrombectomy, and infusions of Antithrombin III concentrate, led to a successful outcome. We postulate that intrauterine thrombosis occurred to give this unusual presentation.

We investigated changes in the concentrations of thrombin-antithrombin III complex (TAT) and plasmin-alpha 2 plasmin inhibitor complex (PIC) after the intravenous administration of 4000 units of antithrombin III (AT III) concentrate to patients with fulminant hepatic failure (FHF), subacute hepatitis (SH), or liver cirrhosis (LC). FHF patients showed shortening of the initial half-life of exogenous AT III. In addition, a marked rise in plasma TAT was noted 3 to 6 h after the intravenous administration of AT III, even in patients who had a normal plasma TAT level before AT III therapy. In contr

IMPORTANCE: Patients with trauma exhibit a complex balance of coagulopathy manifested by both bleeding and thrombosis. Antithrombin III is a plasma protein that functions as an important regulator of coagulation. Previous studies have found a high incidence of antithrombin III deficiency among patients with trauma.
OBJECTIVE: To assess whether changes in antithrombin III activity are associated with thrombohemorrhagic complications among patients with trauma.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study was conducted from December 2, 2015, to March 24, 2017, at a level I trauma cente

Antithrombin (AT) is the major plasma inhibitor of thrombin (FIIa) and activated factor X (FXa), and antithrombin deficiency (ATD) is one of the most severe thrombophilic disorders. In this study, we identified nine novel AT mutations and investigated their genotype-phenotype correlations. Clinical and laboratory data from patients were collected, and the nine mutant AT proteins (p.Arg14Lys, p.Cys32Tyr, p.Arg78Gly, p.Met121Arg, p.Leu245Pro, p.Leu270Argfs*14, p.Asn450Ile, p.Gly456delins_Ala_Thr and p.Pro461Thr) were expressed in HEK293 cells; then, Western blotting, N-Glycosidase F digestion, a

Congenital antithrombin (AT) deficiency is a congenital coagulopathy that predisposes to venous thromboembolism (VTE), although the number of reported patients is limited; thus, large-scale data on the efficacy of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) in this population are lacking. There have been case reports of DOAC use in the treatment of VTE in patients with AT deficiency; however, it remains unclear whether rivaroxaban is effective in resolving thrombus and preventing long-term recurrence in pulmonary thromboembolism (PE) associated with massive deep vein thrombosis (DVT). The patient was a

PURPOSE: Antithrombin (AT) deficiency is a well-known inherited risk factor for venous thromboembolism (VTE). However, F V Leiden and F II20210a mutations have drawn much more attention in the recent years. Therefore, we have decided to analyze the frequency of antithrombin deficiency in different cohorts of patients and tried to formulate indications for its testing.
RESULTS: Antithrombin deficiency was found in 4% of patients with recurrent VTE ≤ 50 years of age with, in 1% of patients with splanchnic vein thrombosis and in 2% of cases associated with combined oral contraceptives (COC) use

Portal vein thrombosis (PVT) has been reported in many patients with and without liver cirrhosis. The portal vein is a rare site of thrombosis, and various conditions can predispose an individual to PVT. Among those conditions, hereditary thrombophilia has been increasingly reported recently. We herein report the case of a non-cirrhotic 30-year-old man who developed acute PVT with hereditary antithrombin deficiency. Antithrombin (AT) replacement therapy was required along with heparin. Given our experience with this case, we believe that a screening test for prothrombotic disorders, such as AT

A 41-year-old female with hereditary deficiency of antithrombin III (ATIII) was diagnosed with atrial septal defect( ASD) and scheduled for the closure of ASD. She had been taking warfarin since she suffered from deep vein thrombosis 10 years ago. Preoperative management of anticoagulation included discontinuation of warfarin, and supplementation of antithrombin with heparin infusion. On the day of operation, antithrombin activity was maintained above 80% by administering antithrombin, and closure of ASD was carried out under standard cardiopulmonary bypass support using heparin. Heparin infus
