Helmet hazards. Do's & don'ts of football helmet removal.

EMS providers must use extreme caution when evaluating and treating an unconscious football player, especially when the extent of the injury remains unknown. Suspect any unconscious football player has an accompanying spinal injury until proven otherwise. If the football player isn't breathing or the possibility of respiratory arrest exists, it's essential that certified athletic trainers and EMS providers work quickly and effectively to remove the face mask and administer care. In most situations, the helmet doesn't need to be removed in the field. Proper management of head and neck injuries

The role of shoe design in ankle sprain rates among collegiate basketball players.

CONTEXT: Much of the recent focus in shoe design and engineering has been on improving athletic performance. Currently, this improvement has been in the form of "cushioned column systems," which are spring-like in design and located under the heel of the shoe in place of a conventional heel counter. Concerns have been raised about whether this design alteration has increased the incidence of ankle sprains. OBJECTIVE: To examine the incidence of lateral ankle sprains in collegiate basketball players with regard to shoe design. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. SETTING: Certified athletic tra

Patient-Reported Outcome Measures in Sports Medicine: A Concise Resource for Clinicians and Researchers.

BACKGROUND: Despite the importance of assessing patient outcomes during patient care, current evidence suggests relatively limited use of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) by athletic trainers (ATs). Major barriers to PROM use include lack of knowledge, navigating the intricate process of assessing a wide variety of PROMs, and selecting the most appropriate PROM to use for care. A concise resource for ATs to consult when selecting and implementing PROMs may help facilitate the use of PROMs in athletic health care. OBJECTIVE: To review the instrument essentials and clinical utility of

Myositis Ossificans of the Adductor Longus in a Soccer Player.

A 20-year-old male collegiate soccer goalkeeper presented to an athletic trainer during the season complaining of right (dominant kicking leg) groin pain. The athletic trainer identified a mass and hematoma and suspected myositis ossificans. The patient was referred to the team physician, who ordered radiographs and magnetic resonance imaging to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other injuries. Imaging demonstrated an adductor longus muscle strain with myositis ossificans. J Orthop Sports Phys Ther 2020;50(10):586. doi:10.2519/jospt.2020.9573.

Ice-man Down: Using Simulation to Practice the Safe Extrication of Collapsed Hockey Players in a Confined Space.

Sporting event emergencies are common among both spectators and players, with unique sets of challenges associated with patient extrication in unfamiliar and chaotic environments. It is critical for sports physicians and trainers to deliberately train and prepare for emergent situations with limited resources during athletic events. One of the most difficult, yet commonly encountered challenges is determining when and how to safely remove an injured player's helmet and sporting equipment, particularly if a spinal injury is highly suspected. We created a high-fidelity simulation case to practic

Relaxed Alert Electroencephalography Screening for Mild Traumatic Brain Injury in Athletes.

Due to the mildness of initial injury, many athletes with recurrent mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) are misdiagnosed with other neuropsychiatric illnesses. This study was designed as a proof-of-principle feasibility trial for athletic trainers at a sports facility to generate electroencephalograms (EEGs) from student athletes for discriminating (mTBI) associated EEGs from uninjured ones. A total of 47 EEGs were generated, with 30 athletes recruited at baseline (BL) pre-season, after a concussive injury (IN), and post-season (PS). Outcomes included: 1) visual analyses of EEGs by a neurologis

Labeling Avoidance in Healthcare Decision-Making: How Stakeholders Make Sense of Concussion Events through Sport Narratives.

This study documents how cultural sport narratives influence athletic team member sensemaking during concussion events. Analysis of macro-level sport culture narratives and interviews (N = 93) with collegiate athletes and athletic trainers from eleven large universities within the United States revealed that participants utilized five cultural sport narratives when making sense of a concussion event (i.e., Play-through-pain, Commodification, Big leagues, Masculine-Warrior, and Need-for-safety). These narratives functioned in two specific ways as athletic team members made sense of concussion e

A Qualitative Analysis of Concussion-Reporting Behavior in Collegiate Student-Athletes With a History of Sport-Related Concussion.

CONTEXT: Many survey-based methods have been used to explore concussion-reporting behavior. However, because the decision to report or conceal a concussion is likely multifactorial, this may narrow the findings, as the surveys were largely designed by the researchers. OBJECTIVE: To explore student-athletes' perspectives regarding factors that may influence the reporting of sport-related concussion. DESIGN: Qualitative study. SETTING: National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I athletics. PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTICIPANTS: We conducted 17 semistructured interviews with student-athletes

Recognition of adjustment disorder in college athletes: a case study.

The occurrence of a sports-related adjustment disorder can inhibit optimum athletic performance and scholastic achievement and impair the overall functioning of athletes. Physicians and trainers caring for athletic teams must maintain an acute awareness of the athlete's mental and physical well-being to detect subtle signs of a mood or psychological disturbance. The case of the collegiate basketball player discussed here exemplifies the subtle presentation and stages of an adjustment disorder with the predominant manifestation of depression mixed with anxiety and disordered conduct. This playe
