An experimental burn wound-healing study of non-thermal atmospheric pressure microplasma jet arrays.

In contrast with a thermal plasma surgical instrument based on coagulative and ablative properties, low-temperature (non-thermal) non-equilibrium plasmas are known for novel medicinal effects on exposed tissue while minimizing undesirable tissue damage. In this study we demonstrated that arrays of non-thermal microplasma jet devices fabricated from a transparent polymer can efficiently inactivate fungi (Candida albicans) as well as bacteria (Escherichia coli), both in vitro and in vivo, and that this leads to a significant wound-healing effect. Microplasma jet arrays offer several advantages o

Thermal and photochemical reactions of NO2 on chromium(III) oxide surfaces at atmospheric pressure.

While many studies of heterogeneous chemistry on Cr(2)O(3) surfaces have focused on its catalytic activity, less is known about chemistry on this surface under atmospheric conditions. We report here studies of the thermal and photochemical reactions of NO(2) on Cr(2)O(3) at one atm in air. In order to follow surface species, the interaction of 16-120 ppm NO(2) with a 15 nm Cr(2)O(3) thin film deposited on a germanium crystal was monitored in a flow system using attenuated total reflectance (ATR) coupled to a Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer. Gas phase products were monitored in t

Bacterial-killing effect of atmospheric pressure non-equilibrium plasma jet and oral mucosa response.

Recently, plasma sterilization has attracted increasing attention in dental community for the atmospheric pressure non-equilibrium plasma jet (APNPs), which is driven by a kilohertz pulsed DC power, may be applied to the dental and oral diseases. However, it is still in doubt whether APNPs can effectively kill pathogenic bacteria in the oral cavity and produce no harmful effects on normal oral tissues, especially on normal mucosa. The aim of this study was to evaluate the bacterial-killing effect of APNPs in the biofilms containing a single breed of bacteria (Porphyromonas gingivalis, P.g.), a

Positive and negative gas-phase ion chemistry of chlorofluorocarbons in air at atmospheric pressure.

This paper presents a report on the ionization/dissociation of some representative chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) induced by corona discharges in air at atmospheric pressure. Both positive and negative ions formed from Freons 1,1,1-trichlorotrifluoroethane (CFC 113a), 1,1,2-trichlorotrifluoroethane (CFC 113), and 1,1,1,2-tetrachlorodifluoroethane (CFC 112a) were analyzed using an atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometry (APCI-MS) instrument. Energy-resolved mass spectra were obtained by modulating the kinetic energy of the ions via adjustment of the sampling cone potential (V(con

Atmospheric pressure ionization mass spectrometry of purine and pyrimidine markers of inherited metabolic disorders.

Purines and pyrimidines are of interest owing to their significance in processes in living organisms. Mass spectrometry is a promising analytical tool utilized in their analysis. Two atmospheric pressure ionization (API) methods (electrospray ionization (ESI) and atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI)) in both negative and positive modes applied to selected purine and pyrimidine metabolites (markers of inherited metabolic disorders) were studied. APCI is less sensitive to alkali metal cations present in a sample and offers higher response than ESI for studied compounds. Both of the te

Analysis of urinary organic acids by liquid chromatography-atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometry.

We developed a new method for the rapid determination of urinary organic acids using liquid chromatography-atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometry. Mass spectra of authentic organic acids obtained in the negative-ion mode showed intense [M-H]- ions with some fragment ions. Urine samples of patients with methylmalonic aciduria, ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency, and phenylketonuria were extracted using anion-exchange columns. The mass chromatograms of the extracts showed some dominant peaks of abnormal metabolites characteristic of each disorder. This is a useful method f

A positive pressure system for selective human exposure to gas and particulate mixed atmospheres.

INTRODUCTION: Exposure to air pollution containing particulates (PM) and gas-phase volatile organic compounds (VOCs), is a leading cause of human morbidity and mortality globally. Devising effective protective public health strategies requires an assessment of the relative contribution of PM and VOCs to the health effects of air pollution exposure. METHODS: To enable studies of VOCs isolated from mixed atmospheres, we developed a positive air pressure exposure system that permits the subject to breathe unimpeded by the pressure drop imposed by filtering respirators. This system uses pumps to

Molecular Mechanisms of the Efficacy of Cold Atmospheric Pressure Plasma (CAP) in Cancer Treatment.

Recently, the potential use of cold atmospheric pressure plasma (CAP) in cancer treatment has gained increasing interest. Especially the enhanced selective killing of tumor cells compared to normal cells has prompted researchers to elucidate the molecular mechanisms for the efficacy of CAP in cancer treatment. This review summarizes the current understanding of how CAP triggers intracellular pathways that induce growth inhibition or cell death. We discuss what factors may contribute to the potential selectivity of CAP towards cancer cells compared to their non-malignant counterparts. Furthermo

Improving the surface properties of an UHMWPE shoulder implant with an atmospheric pressure plasma jet.

Insufficient glenoid fixation is one of the main reasons for failure in total shoulder arthroplasty. This is predominantly caused by the inert nature of the ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) used in the glenoid component of the implant, which makes it difficult to adhesively bind to bone cement or bone. Previous studies have shown that this adhesion can be ameliorated by changing the surface chemistry using plasma technology. An atmospheric pressure plasma jet is used to treat UHMWPE substrates and to modify their surface chemistry. The modifications are investigated using seve

The Role of Free Radicals in Hemolytic Toxicity Induced by Atmospheric-Pressure Plasma Jet.

Atmospheric-pressure plasma (APP) has received attention due to its generation of various kinds of reactive oxygen/nitrogen species (ROS/RNS). The controllability, as well as the complexity, is one of the strong points of APP in various applications. For biological applications of this novel method, the cytotoxicity should be estimated at various levels. Herein, we suggest red blood cell (RBC) as a good cell model that is simpler than nucleated cells but much more complex than other lipid model systems. Air and N2 gases were compared to verify the main ROS/RNS in cytotoxicity, and microscopic

Non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasmas as a novel candidate for preventive therapy of melanoma.

Due to the increased ultraviolet radiation, the incidence of melanoma is increasing worldwide more than that of any other cancer. In this study, the effects of irradiation of non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasmas (NEAPPs) on benign melanocytic tumors from our original hairless model mice (HL-RET-mice), in which benign melanocytic tumors and melanomas spontaneously develop in the skin stepwise, were examined. Expression levels of melanoma cell adhesion molecule (MCAM) and matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) mRNA in melanomas were higher than those in benign melanocytic tumors in the mice. Rep

Application of microwave air plasma in the destruction of trichloroethylene and carbon tetrachloride at atmospheric pressure.

In this study, the destruction rate of a volatile waste destruction system based on a microwave plasma torch operating at atmospheric pressure was investigated. Atmospheric air was used to maintain the plasma and was introduced by a compressor, which resulted in lower operating costs compared to other gases such as argon and helium. To isolate the output gases and control the plasma discharge atmosphere, the plasma was coupled to a reactor. The effect of the gas flow rate, microwave power and initial concentration of compound on the destruction efficiency of the system was evaluated. In this s

Entero-Cutaneous and Entero-Atmospheric Fistulas: Insights into Management Using Negative Pressure Wound Therapy.

Enteric fistulas are a common problem in gastrointestinal tract surgery and remain associated with significant mortality rates, due to complications such as sepsis, malnutrition, and electrolyte imbalance. The increasingly widespread use of open abdomen techniques for the initial treatment of abdominal sepsis and trauma has led to the observation of so-called entero-atmospheric fistulas. Because of their clinical complexity, the proper management of enteric fistula requires a multidisciplinary team. The main goal of the treatment is the closure of enteric fistula, but also mortality reduction

Autofluorescence-guided Removal of Bacterial Biofilms from Tissues Using Cold Atmospheric Pressure Plasma (CAP).

Cold atmospheric pressure plasma (CAP) has the potential to completely remove biofilms from surfaces. The goal of this study is to employ the autofluorescence nature of bacterial biofilms to guide the removal of these biofilms using a CAP scalpel. Pseudomonas fluorescens biofilms, which produce a green fluorescence under 405 nm UV light, were grown on 12 chicken samples. The tissue model (chicken tissue) is placed on a motorized X-Y stage with the plasma discharge device directly above the sample. Fluorescent-guided CAP treatment of biofilm regions was carried out using a 1.37 lpm Ar/H2O plasm

Non-thermal atmospheric-pressure plasma potentiates mesodermal differentiation of human induced pluripotent stem cells.

Non-thermal atmospheric-pressure plasma has been used for biological applications, including sterilization and stimulation of cell growth and differentiation. Here, we demonstrate that plasma exposure influences the differentiation pattern of human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs). We treated hiPSCs with dielectric barrier-discharge air plasma and found an exposure dose that does not kill hiPSCs. Immunohistochemical staining for E-CADHERIN showed that the exposure affected cell-cell attachment and doubled the average size of the hiPSCs. Analysis of mRNAs in embryoid bodies (EBs) from pl
