Effectiveness of Two Topical Anaesthetic Agents used along with Audio Visual Aids in Paediatric Dental Patients.

INTRODUCTION: Topical anaesthetic agents enable pain free intraoral procedures, symptomatic pain relief for toothache, superficial mucosal lesions and pain related to post extraction time. Most common anxiety provoking and fearful experience for children in dental operatory is administration of local anaesthesia because on seeing the needle, children usually become uncooperative. One of recent trend of behaviour management technique is using non-aversive techniques out of which audiovisual distraction has emerged as a very successful technique for managing children in dental settings. Effects of an Audiovisual Intervention to Improve Competence to Consent to Research Participation Among Young Gay and Bisexual Men Who Use Stimulants.

PURPOSE: Standard consent practices in HIV research often do not facilitate truly competent informed consent. We examined a brief audiovisual intervention to enhance competence to consent to participate in a hypothetical trial aimed at promoting sexual health and reducing stimulant use among young gay and bisexual men who use stimulants. METHODS: Between June 2024 and January 2025, we enrolled 115 young gay and bisexual men aged 16-24 years who were at risk for HIV transmission or acquisition and reported recent stimulant use. Participants were randomized to standard consent (i.e., written in

Randomised study showed that recorded maternal voices reduced pain in preterm infants undergoing heel lance procedures in a neonatal intensive care unit.

AIM: Alleviating pain in neonates should be the goal of all caregivers. We evaluated whether recorded maternal voices were safe and effective in limiting pain in preterm infants undergoing heel lance procedures in the neonatal intensive care unit of an Italian children's hospital. METHODS: This prospective, controlled study took place from December 2013 to December 2015. We enrolled 40 preterm infants, born at a 26-34 weeks of gestation, at a corrected gestational age 29-36 weeks and randomised them to listen or not listen to a recording of their mother's voice during a painful, routine heel

Culturally appropriate flipcharts improve the knowledge of common respiratory conditions among Northern Territory Indigenous families.

ISSUE ADDRESSED: Flipcharts are widely used as education tools in Indigenous health but there is no published quantitative data on their use. As respiratory illness is the most frequent reason for hospitalisation of young children, we developed culturally sensitive flipcharts to educate carers of children on the 3 most common serious respiratory illness (bronchiolitis, pneumonia and bronchiectasis) affecting Indigenous children in the Northern Territory. In this study, we aimed to determine if use of these flipcharts improved the knowledge of these respiratory conditions among carers of Indige

Memory and interpretation of visual representations of threat in socially anxious and nonanxious individuals.

The present study was designed to replicate and extend results reported by Brendle and Wenzel (Behav. Res. Ther. 42 (2004) 155), who found that socially anxious individuals accurately recalled threat-relevant information but subsequently imposed a biased interpretation upon that same material, using more ecologically valid stimuli. Socially anxious (n=37) and nonanxious (n=47) individuals viewed two positive, two negative, and two neutral video vignettes and completed two cognitive tasks assessing memory and interpretation of factual details immediately and after 48 h. Similar to the results r

Situational cue and strategy influence on speechreading.

The influence of situational cues and reasoning strategies on speechreading was studied in normal-hearing and minimally hearing-impaired adults. Everyday Speech Sentences (Davis & Silverman, 1968) produced by a female talker were videotaped without sound in the context of a visual background scene. A non-verbal acoustic signal was matched to each sentence and dubbed onto the recording. Thus, each test item consisted of an inaudible sentence presented with an optical and acoustic situational cue. The experimental task was structured so that subjects speechread sentences using deductive or induc

Audiovisual Distraction Increases Success Rates of Sedation-Free Pediatric Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

BACKGROUND: The increasing utilization of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in pediatric populations necessitates strategies to mitigate the risks and logistical challenges associated with sedation. Sedation in pediatric MRI procedures poses significant risks and can increase healthcare costs. Therefore, alternative methods to facilitate successful unsedated scans are essential. AIMS: This study evaluates the impact of audiovisual MRI (AV-MRI) technology along with predictive patient factors to perform a diagnostic MRI without sedation. Additionally, image quality with motion artifacts was eva

Graphic analysis for the study of metabolic states.

Graphic analyses have been used in the study of physiology as a means to better understand dynamic processes and to visualize the mechanisms of their interactions. A graphic analysis of glucose homeostasis was constructed by considering the main factors that influence glucose dynamics. The analysis is achieved by equating curves representing both the inflow and outflow of glucose from the circulation as dependent upon the serum insulin concentration. The point where these two curves intersect is the steady-state balance for blood glucose exchange and is termed the equilibrium point. With the u

Client-based adjustments of hearing aid gain: the effect of different control configurations.

OBJECTIVES: Facilitating the fine-tuning of advanced hearing aids requires information about the acoustic environment. The concept of a "trainable" hearing aid may provide a more direct approach to hearing aid fine-tuning if the aid user is allowed to control the most important fitting parameters in his/her own acoustic environments. DESIGN: In a laboratory study, the concept of self-adjustment of the gain-frequency response was tested by 24 hearing aid users using four different controllers with a limited number of control functions. Research questions focused on the reproducibility of the f

Nurses' perceptions of an audiovisual material to support patient education on oral health management in diabetes care.

Educational support for nurses is essential to promote oral health management education for patients with diabetes. However, few studies have focused on supporting nurses in this context. This study explored the effects of an audiovisual material designed to support nurses' patient education on oral health management in diabetes care. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight certified diabetes nurse educators. Data were analyzed using content analysis. Four main themes emerged: (1) enhancement of nurses' individual learning (8/8 participants), including improved knowledge of the co

Systematic adaptation of a visual-aided adolescent nutrition intervention from peri-urban Burkina Faso for rural Uganda using intervention mapping.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) aged 10–24 years in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), including rural Uganda, frequently exhibit low nutrition literacy and poor diet quality, increasing their risk of malnutrition and diet-related non-communicable diseases. Many nutrition interventions are developed in high-income or school-based settings, limiting their relevance for low-income, rural, and out-of-school populations. Context-specific, community-anchored interventions deliverable through existing community health systems remain scarce. This study systematically adapted an adolescent nutr
