Abnormalities of the autonomic nervous system have been described in several connective tissue diseases, but the relation with primary Sjögren's syndrome is unclear. This report describes a patient with primary Sjögren's syndrome who presented with severe autonomic failure. The present knowledge on dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system in primary Sjögren's syndrome and other connective tissue diseases is shortly reviewed.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The autonomic nervous system is an important regulator of stress responses and exhibits functional changes in chronic pain states. This review discusses potential overlap among autonomic dysregulation, osteoarthritis (OA) progression, and chronic pain. From this foundation, we then discuss preclinical to clinical research opportunities to close gaps in our knowledge of autonomic dysregulation and OA. Finally, we consider the potential to generate new therapies for OA pain via modulation of the autonomic nervous system.
RECENT FINDINGS: Recent reviews provide a framework for

PURPOSE: Autonomic nervous system dysfunction exists in autoimmune diseases. Symptoms of autoimmune gastritis are not specific, and some patients may present symptoms suggestive of delayed gastric emptying. This study aims to investigate whether any autonomic dysfunction exists in autoimmune gastritis patients, and if so, to clarify the relationship between the autonomic nervous dysfunction, delayed gastric emptying, and gastrointestinal symptoms.
METHODS: 75 patients (50 women, mean age 56.73 ± 11.77) diagnosed with autoimmune gastritis were investigated by means of autonomic nervous system

Knowledge of the physiology underlying the autonomic nervous system is pivotal for understanding autonomic dysfunction in clinical practice. Autonomic dysfunction may result from primary modifications of the autonomic nervous system or be secondary to a wide range of diseases that cause severe morbidity and mortality. Together with a detailed history and physical examination, laboratory assessment of autonomic function is essential for the analysis of various clinical conditions and the establishment of effective, personalized and precise therapeutic schemes. This review summarizes the main as

The autonomic nervous system is involved and influenced in patients with epilepsy and mitochondrial diseases in a variety of complex, often multifaceted, mechanisms. Autonomic dysfunction often remains unrecognized due to a lack of attention and awareness under the prominence of other disease symptoms. Recognition of the diverse autonomic manifestations of epilepsy and mitochondrial disease would enhance early diagnosis and appropriate management, ultimately improving quality the of life and reducing morbidity and mortality in the affected patients. In this chapter, we discuss autonomic nervou

Gastrointestinal motility is greatly influenced by both the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and the enteric nervous system (ENS). Dysfunction of ANS and/or ENS produces various kinds of dysmotility from the esophagus to the colon. Generalized autonomic dysfunction, often seen in diabetics, causes abnormal peristaltic waves in the esophagus, abnormal electrical activity of the stomach, delayed gastric emptying and delayed intestinal transit. Localized disorders of the enteric nervous system is seen in patients with achalasia and Hirschsprung's diseases. Functional disorders, without evidence of

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Autonomic disorders sometimes occur in the context of systemic autoimmune disease or as a direct consequence of autoimmunity against the nervous system. This article provides an overview of autonomic disorders with potential autoimmune etiology.
RECENT FINDINGS: Recent evidence highlights a close association between the autonomic nervous system and inflammation. The autonomic nervous system regulates immune function, and autonomic manifestations may occur in a number of systemic autoimmune diseases. In a few instances, autoimmunity directly influences autonomic function. Au

Bone remodeling is thought to be regulated by many factors including nutritional status, humoral factors, and biomechanical stress. However, the involvement of the autonomic nervous system, mainly the sympathetic nervous system (SNS), in the modulation of bone remodeling is beginning to receive more attention. Neural innervation of bone has been demonstrated. Both experimental and clinical evidence has indicated the involvement of autonomic nervous system regulation in bone metabolism. The sympathetic neural pathway is so far the only identified link between the potent leptin-dependent central

An artificial nerve, in the broad sense, may be conceptualized as a physical and logical interface system that reestablishes the information traffic between the central nervous system and peripheral organs. Studies on artificial nerves targeting the autonomic nervous system are in progress to explore new treatment strategies for several cardiovascular diseases. In this article, we will review our research targeting the autonomic nervous system to treat cardiovascular diseases. First, we identified the rule for decoding native sympathetic nerve activity into a heart rate using transfer function

From the perspective of neuropathies with an acute onset mimicking that of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), cases with profound sensory and/or autonomic impairment without any significant weakness have been reported. Although the possibility of infectious or toxic etiologies should be carefully excluded, immune mechanisms similar to those in GBS are suggested to be involved in these so-called acute sensory neuropathies and acute autonomic neuropathies. The types of neuropathy include those with predominant sensory manifestations, predominant autonomic manifestations such as autoimmune autonomic

The peripheral autonomic nervous system regulates the automatic, typically involuntary processes of the body under neural control. As with other types of polyneuropathy, autonomic neuropathies may arise from a variety of causes. Autonomic neuropathies may be generalized (global) or selective (affecting a single or few autonomic functions). Clinical diagnosis of autonomic neuropathies relies primarily on an appropriate clinical history incorporating an autonomic review of systems. Many cases of autonomic neuropathy remain idiopathic. When an underlying cause of autonomic neuropathy can be ident

The autonomic nervous system (ANS), comprised of two primary branches, sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system, plays an essential role in the regulation of vascular wall contractility and tension. The sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves work together to balance the functions of autonomic effector organs. The neurotransmitters released from the varicosities in the ANS can regulate the vascular tone. Norepinephrine (NE), adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and Neuropeptide Y (NPY) function as vasoconstrictors, whereas acetylcholine (Ach) and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) can mediate

The autonomic nervous system is a crucial mediator between the central nervous system and peripheral tissues and is essential for maintaining homeostasis. In this Review, we discuss the bidirectional communication between the autonomic nervous system and metabolic tissues in humans, focusing on the coordination of systemic glucose and lipid metabolism through autonomic signalling across changing physiological states. We also discuss the crosstalk between autonomic and immune pathways and its relevance for metabolic control. An overview of current methodologies to assess autonomic function in h

Autonomic nervous system (ANS) modulates the function of all body organs through both parasympathetic and sympathetic fibers. Orthostatic hypotension is frequently observed in the course of central nervous system diseases including cortical (stroke, epilepsy, dementias), neurodegenerative (Parkinson's disease, multisystem atrophies) and spinal cord diseases. In some cases, the mechanism of orthostatic hypotension associated with central nervous system diseases involves a dysfunction of peripheral ANS fibers.

Microvibration (MV) is the minute vibration observed on surface of the human body. MV on the thenar eminence has been used as an autonomic function test, and is one of the important psychophysiological methods in psychosomatic medicine because the measurement of MV is not invasive. Although the mechanism generating MV has not been definitely clarified, there seems to be two major components, a ballistocardiographic one and a muscular one. The analysis of MV focuses on frequency characteristics. To broaden the clinical application of MV measurement, it is necessary to improve the analyzing meth

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) coordinates multiple reflex actions which are essential for life. The tests employed to evaluate the ANS provide valuable information of the functional state of these reflex arcs. The ideal test should be simple to perform, noninvasive, reproducible, sensitive, specific, safe, and appropriate for longitudinal studies. The availability of computer-based techniques has facilitated the electrophysiological assessment of ANS-mediated reflexes. The information provided by autonomic testing must be analyzed in combination with the clinical history and physical exam
