Characterisation of nocturnal arrhythmia avalanche dynamics: Insights from generalised linear model analysis.

Nocturnal arrhythmia avalanche (NAA) episodes, characterised by transient non-sustained cardiac arrhythmias during sleep, have been demonstrated as a predictor of adverse cardiovascular events. However, their dynamics and association with sleep architecture and events remain unclear. While generalised linear models (GLM) have captured sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) dynamics, their application to NAA remains underexplored. This study explored whether changes in sleep architecture contribute to nocturnal arrhythmias and if the impact of sleep stages, SDB, and arousal events on these arrhythmia

Acceptance of Risk and Confidence Assessing Avalanche Terrain and Conditions: A Large Cross-Sectional Study.

IntroductionThe COVID-19 pandemic affected the ski industry globally, including limiting access to ski resorts and prompting more skiers and snowboarders to explore the backcountry. In this study, we quantified the willingness to take risks (risk propensity) and self-perceived ability to assess hazards in the backcountry and to explore correlations between these factors.MethodsWe based our study on a previously reported data set gathered under the supervision of our senior author, who collected anonymous responses to a 29-question online survey completed by 4792 self-identified backcountry ski

Characterizing bone injuries in avalanche fatalities in the French Alps: Comparing anthropological and surgical classifications.

Avalanches are a major cause of death in mountainous regions, primarily from asphyxia. However, increased recreational activities and climate change may be leading to more traumatic injuries, such as bone fractures, which are currently understudied. This study compared two distinct bone fracture classification systems, to better understand specific injury mechanisms in avalanche victims. We conducted a retrospective analysis of post-mortem CT scans from 13 adult avalanche victims in Grenoble, France, all with at least one bone fracture. Using MIP, MPR, and 3D reconstructions, we systematically

Engineering of Impact Ionization Characteristics in GaAs/GaAsBi Multiple Quantum Well Avalanche Photodiodes.

The presence of large bismuth (Bi) atoms has been shown to increase the spin-orbit splitting energy in bulk GaAsBi, reducing the hole ionization coefficient (β) and thereby reducing the excess noise seen in avalanche photodiodes. In this study, we show that even very thin layers of GaAsBi introduced as quantum wells (QWs) in a GaAs matrix exhibit a significant reduction of β while leaving the electron ionization coefficient, α, largely unchanged. The optical and avalanche multiplication properties of a series of GaAsBi/GaAs multiple quantum well (MQW) p-i-n structures with nominally 5 nm thick

Prevalence of airway patency and air pocket in critically buried avalanche victims - a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Survival of critically buried avalanche victims is directly dependent on the patency of the airway and the victims' ability to breathe. While guidelines and avalanche research have consistently emphasized on the importance of airway patency, there is a notable lack of evidence regarding its prevalence. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this review is to provide insight into the prevalence of airway patency and air pocket in critically buried avalanche victims. METHODS: A scoping review was done in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISM

Factors affecting survival from avalanche burial--a randomised prospective porcine pilot study.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The majority of avalanche victims who sustain complete burial die within 35min due to asphyxia and injuries. After 35min, survival is possible only in the presence of a patent airway, and an accompanying air pocket around the face may improve survival. At this stage hypothermia is assumed to be an important factor for survival because rapid cooling decreases oxygen consumption; if deep hypothermia develops before cardiac arrest, hypothermia may be protective and prolong the time that cardiac arrest can be survived. The aim of the study was to investigate the combined effect

Rescue missions for totally buried avalanche victims: conclusions from 12 years of experience.

The planning and execution of avalanche rescue missions to search for totally buried avalanche victims are mostly based on personal experience and preference, as evidence-based information from literature is almost completely missing. Hence, the aim of this study was to identify major factors determining the survival probability of totally buried victims during avalanche rescue missions carried out by organized rescue teams (Austrian Mountain Rescue Service, Tyrol). During the 12-year period studied, 109 totally buried persons (56 off-piste, 53 backcountry), were rescued or recovered; 18.3% su

Two-dimensionally expanded flow cytometry with an array of time-gated single photon avalanche diodes.

Conventional flow cytometry typically relies on narrow fluidic channels and optical filters, which can limit the handling of varied sample types and increase system complexity. Here we present two-dimensionally expanded flow cytometry (2DFC) employing an array of time-gated single-photon avalanche diodes (SPADs) to enable parallelized, high-throughput fluorescence detection of single cells and cell clusters of various sizes. In 2DFC, individual time-gated SPADs serve as interrogation points of the flow cytometer, enabling two-dimensional expansion of the interrogation area through an array of

Gate-tunable broad-spectrum avalanche photodetector based on WSe2/MoTe2 type-I heterojunction.

Two-dimensional materials have demonstrated revolutionary potential in optoelectronic devices due to their atomic-scale thickness, high carrier mobility, and broad bandgap coverage. Among them, tungsten diselenide (WSe2) and molybdenum ditelluride (MoTe2), as representative members of the transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) family, can be vertically stacked to form a type-I van der Waals heterojunction, offering a strategy for designing high-performance avalanche phototransistors (APTs). The core operating principle of an APT relies on carrier avalanche multiplication under a high electric f

High-speed InGaAs/GaAsSb type-II superlattice avalanche photodiodes beyond 2 µm.

The 2 μm spectral window has emerged as a promising candidate to mitigate the impending capacity crunch of the standard C-band. However, the development of high-speed photodetectors, specifically avalanche photodiodes (APDs), remains a bottleneck compared to the maturity of 2 μm fiber and amplifier technologies. In this paper, we report on a high-speed surface-illuminated APD operating at 2 μm, grown on an InP substrate with an InGaAs/GaAsSb type-II superlattice (T2SL) absorption layer. The device exhibits an extended cutoff wavelength exceeding 2.4 μm. The responsivity is measured to be 0.14

A COVID-19 Diagnosis Like an Avalanche Triggers a Series of Adverse Events but Saves a Life in the End.

Patients diagnosed with cancer are less frequently covered by preventive measures for cardiovascular diseases. The frequent co-occurrence of these diseases makes it necessary to apply parallel diagnostics and cardiological treatment with anti-cancer therapy. Frequently. multidisciplinary team discussions are needed. Case report: We present a case of a 73-year-old former smoker with hyperlipidemia, type 2 diabetes, and arterial hypertension, after a partial right nephrectomy in 2005 due to kidney cancer, diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 infection in April 2022. Hypoxia and hypercapnia effects on cerebral oxygen saturation in avalanche burial: A pilot human experimental study.

BACKGROUND: A sufficient supply of oxygen is crucial to avoid hypoxic cardiac arrest and brain damage within 30 min in completely-buried avalanche victims. Snow density influences levels of hypoxia and hypercapnia. The goal of this study was to investigate the effects of hypoxia and hypercapnia on cerebral oxygenation (ScO2) in humans breathing into an artificial air pocket. METHODS: Each subject breathed into a closed system (air-tight face mask - plastic tube - snow air-pocket of 4 L) up to 30 min. Each subject performed three tests in different snow densities. ScO2 was measured by a near-i

Experimental characterization of after-pulsing probability in InGaAs/InP-based single-photon avalanche photodiodes.

We present an automated, software-driven instrument for rapid and precise characterization of after-pulsing probability (PAP) in single-photon avalanche diodes (SPADs). The system replaces subjective manual analysis with a robust algorithm that separates correlated after-pulses from uncorrelated noise in inter-arrival time histograms. Using this instrument, we systematically map PAP as a function of dead time (1-80 μs) and detection efficiency (2.5%-25%) for commercial InGaAs/InP SPADs in free-running and gated modes. For the ID210 detector at 10% efficiency, PAP decreases from 12.8% to 3.2% a

Altered cardiac timing neural avalanche in major depressive disorder: new insights from magnetoencephalography.

AIM: Previous studies have found that patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) exist in a subcritical state, impairing information processing. However, the mechanisms behind these abnormalities remain unclear, as biomolecular explanations offer only a partial explanation. The brain's efficiency depends not only on molecular networks but also on peripheral physiological rhythms, particularly cardiac signals. Given that MDD involves deficits in heart-brain interactions, this study aims to examine how resting-state neural avalanche dynamics vary across cardiac cycles in MDD. METHODS: We col

Right-Predominant Pulmonary Edema After Complete Avalanche Burial: Two Cases and Mechanistic Considerations.

Avalanche burial occasionally precipitates pulmonary edema, yet its pathogenesis remains poorly understood. Two male back-country skiers (aged 39 and 53 years) were completely buried for 30 min and 20 min, respectively, by the same avalanche, and immobilized in a right-lateral posture without safety devices. They arrived 2 h post-extrication, conscious but hypothermic (32.4 °C and 34.2 °C, respectively), tachycardic, tachypneic, and hypoxemic (SpO2 88% and 83%, respectively). Chest radiography and computed tomography demonstrated extensive infiltrates or ground-glass opacities confined predomi
