Infection prevention in bone marrow transplantation and radiation patients.

This article reviews the prevention of oral and systemic infection in bone marrow transplantation and radiation patients. Prophylaxis of herpes virus reactivation in bone marrow transplant and leukemic patients has resulted in reduced morbidity associated with their medical management. In order to reduce the risk of systemic infection, reduction in ulcerative mucositis is desirable. The use of antifungal and antibacterial agents has not been encouraging to date. Cytoprotective agents have shown some initial success in preventing mucosal breakdown. Further study is required to confirm these ini

Development and characterization of mucoadhesive-thermoresponsive gels for the treatment of oral mucosa diseases.

INTRODUCTION: The mucositis is an inflammatory, erosive and ulcerative process of the oral mucosa. It is usually caused by radiation, chemotherapy, infections, diabetes, smoking and it is characterized by severe pain and difficulty eating and can have a very serious impact on quality of life. A suitable treatment must ensure pain control and mechanical protection to promote mucosal healing. The purpose of this work was to study an in-situ gelling formulation to be sprayed onto the damaged oral mucosa by self-administration. The formulation must be able to quickly form a film when applied in th

A review on synthetic strategy, molecular pharmacology of indazole derivatives, and their future perspective.

With different nitrogen-containing heterocyclic moieties, Indazoles earn one of the places among the top investigated molecules in medicinal research. Indazole, an important fused aromatic heterocyclic system containing benzene and pyrazole ring with a chemical formula of C7 H6 N2 , is also called benzopyrazole. Indazoles consist of three tautomeric forms in which 1H-tautomers (indazoles) and 2H-tautomers (isoindazoles) exist in all phases. The tautomerism in indazoles greatly influences synthesis, reactivity, physical and even the biological properties of indazoles. The thermodynamic internal

Effects of mepirizole and basic antiinflammatory drugs on HCl-ethanol-induced gastric lesions in rats.

Mepirozole, a basic antiinflammatory drug and duodenal ulcerogen in laboratory animals, macroscopically protected the gastric mucosa of rats from HCl-ethanol-induced damage in a dose-dependent manner. These effects were evident when the agent was given orally, intraperitoneally, or subcutaneously at 3 or 10 mg/kg 0.5 hr before HCl-ethanol administration. Histologically, the surface epithelial and pit cells were not protected by mepirizole, but most of the mucosal cells located in the deeper portions were well preserved. Gastric acid secretion in the pylorus-ligated or acute fistula preparation

Anti-prion drugs reduce endoplasmic reticulum stress and protect human dopaminergic neurons from death.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by the pathologic aggregation of α-synuclein, which induces endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and activates the unfolded protein response (UPR), ultimately leading to the death of dopaminergic neurons. This study investigated whether drugs known to mitigate protein aggregation in prion disease models would attenuate the stress response and cell death in PD models. Flunarizine and ten of its structural analogues, previously identified through a drug repositioning approach to reduce the aggregation of PrPSc prion protein, were evaluated in a Chinese hams

[Management of mucositis following radiotherapy for head and neck cancers].

Acute mucositis is common after radiotherapy for head and neck cancers. During the past 3 decades, there was a gradual evolution in the treatment modalities for locally advanced carcinomas (concomitant radio-chemotherapy, accelerated radiotherapy). These new strategies are accompanied by an increase in early mucosal reactions. At the present time, there is no widely accepted prophylaxis or effective treatment. Many traditional remedies or new agents seem ineffective (Sucralfate, Chlorhexidine, GM-CSF, Silver nitrate, Prostaglandin, anti-oxidants, Benzydamine hydrochloride), while others seem p
