Body Fat Distribution Contributes to Defining the Relationship between Insulin Resistance and Obesity in Human Diseases.

The risk for metabolic and cardiovascular complications of obesity is defined by body fat distribution rather than global adiposity. Unlike subcutaneous fat, visceral fat (including hepatic steatosis) reflects insulin resistance and predicts type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. In humans, available evidence indicates that the ability to store triglycerides in the subcutaneous adipose tissue reflects enhanced insulin sensitivity. Prospective studies document an association between larger subcutaneous fat mass at baseline and reduced incidence of impaired glucose tolerance. Case-control s

Body fat mass distribution and interrupter resistance, fractional exhaled nitric oxide, and asthma at school-age.

BACKGROUND: Obesity and asthma often coexist. We hypothesized that detailed body fat distribution measures might be more strongly associated than body mass index (BMI) with childhood asthma. OBJECTIVE: We examined the associations of total body and abdominal fat measures with respiratory resistance (Rint), fractional exhaled nitric oxide (Feno), and risks of wheezing and asthma in school-aged children. METHODS: In a population-based prospective cohort study among 6178 children aged 6 years, we measured BMI, fat mass index, android/gynoid ratio, and preperitoneal and subcutaneous fat mass by

The relationship of internalized racism to body fat distribution and insulin resistance among African adolescent youth.

This study examined the relationship of internalized racism (INR) and hostility to body fat distribution and insulin resistance in black adolescent children age 14-16 years on the Caribbean island of Barbados. Questionnaire data on psychosocial variables and anthropometric measurements, together with a fasting blood sample, were obtained from 53 low-birthweight and 119 normal-birthweight adolescents. Insulin resistance was calculated using the homeostasis model assessment (HOMA). Spearman correlation analyses showed that both INR (r = 0.244) and hostility (r = 0.204) were significantly (p < 0.

Associations of Body Fat Distribution and Cardiometabolic Risk of Testicular Cancer Survivors After Cisplatin-Based Chemotherapy.

BACKGROUND: It is unknown how body fat distribution modulates the cardiometabolic risk of testicular cancer survivors after cisplatin-based chemotherapy. METHODS: For 455 patients enrolled in the Platinum Study at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, visceral (VAT) and subcutaneous (SAT) adipose tissue was quantified on prechemotherapy computed tomography. The VAT-to-SAT ratio was calculated as a quantitative measure of central adiposity. Endpoints were incidence of new posthemotherapy cardiometabolic disease (new antihypertensive, lipid-lowering, or diabetes medication), and postchemother

The Relationship Between Body Fat Distribution and Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver in Adults With Type 1 Diabetes.

OBJECTIVE: Obesity, which is associated with nonalcoholic fatty liver (NAFL), has increased among people with type 1 diabetes. Therefore, we explored the associations between body fat distribution and NAFL in this population. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: This study included 121 adults with type 1 diabetes from the Finnish Diabetic Nephropathy (FinnDiane) Study for whom NAFL was determined by magnetic resonance imaging. Body composition was assessed by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Genetic data concerning PNPLA3 rs738409 and TM6SF2 rs58542926 were available as a directly genotyped polymorp

The relationship between coronary atherosclerosis and body fat distribution measured using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry.

OBJECTIVE: Body fat distribution is closely related to cardiovascular diseases. We aimed to evaluate the relationship between truncal fat distribution and the extent of coronary atherosclerosis. METHODS: Total body fat and regional body fat distributions were measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) in 746 Korean patients who underwent coronary angiography. The ratios of truncal fat mass to total body fat mass (FMtrunk/FMtotal), truncal fat mass to fat mass in both legs (FMtrunk/FMleg) and truncal fat mass to fat mass in both arms (FMtrunk/FMarm) were calculated as representative

Body fat distribution and metabolic derangements in patients with familial partial lipodystrophy associated with mandibuloacral dysplasia.

Mandibuloacral dysplasia (MAD) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder that is characterized by mandibular and clavicular hypoplasia, acroosteolysis, delayed closure of cranial sutures, joint contractures, and mottled cutaneous pigmentation. It is also associated with partial lipodystrophy, but the pattern of fat loss has not been well characterized. We studied body fat distribution in two male and two female patients with MAD by anthropometry, dual energy x-ray absorptiometry, and magnetic resonance imaging. Blood glucose and insulin responses during an oral glucose tolerance test and fasting

Sex hormones, body fat distribution, resting metabolic rate and glucose-induced thermogenesis in premenopausal obese women.

The topographic specificity of upper body obesity is known to be at the origin of a series of metabolic complications. In contrast to this negative effect, women with abdominal obesity usually can lose more body weight than women with gluteal-femoral obesity. In order to find some contributive explanations for this effect, we studied resting metabolic rate (RMR) and glucose-induced thermogenesis (GIT) in both types of obesity. Since upper body obesity is characterized by androgen excess, a relationship between body fat distribution, sex hormones, RMR and indices of thermogenesis was studied. O

Does body fat distribution promote familial aggregation of adult onset diabetes mellitus and postmenopausal breast cancer?

Noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and postmenopausal breast cancer share a number of risk factors, including obesity, increased waist-to-hip ratio, and a positive family history. If risk for these diseases is mediated through a familial tendency for abdominal obesity, then one might expect to see familial clustering of both diseases. We analyzed data from a prospective cohort study of 41,837 Iowa women age 55-69 years. Diabetes was not associated with incidence of breast cancer [relative risk (RR) = 0.97]. The association between family history of breast cancer and breast cancer incidence

Magnesium and obesity: influence of gender, glucose tolerance, and body fat distribution on circulating magnesium concentrations.

Obesity is characterized by a high risk for glucose intolerance and cardiovascular disease. Since magnesium deficiency or depletion have often been associated with both pathologies, is of interest to study magnesium status in severely obese subjects before any form of treatment. Negative magnesium balances have been described in overweight persons submitted to total starvation, hypocaloric diets, and obesity surgery. For this reason 80 non-diabetic obese men and 118 age-matched obese women were studied. Serum and erythrocyte magnesium concentrations were significantly higher in the male popula

Obesity, Body Fat Distribution, and Blood Pressure in Hispanic and Non-Hispanic Whites in a National Survey.

OBJECTIVES: Recent data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) indicated that despite a higher prevalence of obesity in Hispanic women than non-Hispanic White women, their hypertension prevalence did not differ. Obesity and large upper arm (UA) circumference can affect the accuracy of BP readings. Anthropometric data were used to test the hypothesis that UA circumference was related to systolic blood pressure (BP), indicating possible inaccuracy of readings in either group. METHODS: The data analysis was conducted using the NHANES 2017-March 2020 pre-coronavirus di

Impact of Body Fat Distribution and Insulin Sensitivity on In Vitro Fertilization Outcomes: A Prospective Observational Study.

Background: Since overweight is increasing worldwide, the interest in its potential impact on fertility treatment has increased. Whilst the body mass index (BMI)-based overweight classification is simple, BMI cannot measure body fat distribution. In this research, we aim to investigate whether waist circumference (WC) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) are better predictors of ovarian response in IVF cycles than BMI. Methods: This prospective observational study included 265 couples undergoing their first IVF/ICSI treatment. BMI, WC, WHR, and insulin sensitivity (measured with homeostatic model asse

Body fat distribution in women with familial partial lipodystrophy caused by mutation in the lamin A/C gene.

Familial partial lipodystrophy (FPLD), Dunnigan variety, is an autosomal dominant disorder caused due to missense mutations in the lamin A/C (LMNA) gene encoding nuclear lamina proteins. Patients with FPLD are predisposed to metabolic complications of insulin resistance such as diabetes. We sought to evaluate and compare body fat distribution with dual-emission X-ray absorptiometry in women with and without FPLD and identify densitometric, clinical and metabolic features.

Breast-cancer incidence in relation to height, weight and body-fat distribution in the Dutch "DOM" cohort.

In a cohort of 11,663 participants in a breast-cancer screening program, height, weight, waist circumference and hip circumference were measured, and information about menstrual and reproductive history was obtained by questionnaire. After exclusion of 83 women with unclear menopausal status, the subjects were divided into 3 sub-cohorts: 5,891 women who were pre-menopausal at the time of data collection, 3,521 women who had entered the study after natural menopause, and 2068 women who had been hysterectomized and/or ovariectomized. After a median follow-up of 10.6 years, 147, 76 and 52 inciden

Effect of family history, body-fat distribution, and reproductive factors on the risk of postmenopausal breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: A family history of breast cancer reflects shared cultural factors, genetic predisposition, or both. There is evidence that the estimated risk associated with a family history of breast cancer increases multiplicatively in combination with other risk factors. We examined the combined effect of family history and anthropometric and reproductive factors on the risk of breast cancer in postmenopausal women. METHODS: Using data from a prospective cohort study, we studied 37,105 women 55 to 69 years of age to determine whether known risk factors for breast cancer are modified by a repo

Body fat distributions differentiate the risk of type 2 diabetes in women with a history of gestational diabetes.

AIMS: To explore whether postpartum body fat distributions can predict type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) risk in women with a history of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). METHODS: Data of 442 women with GDM history from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2018 were adopted. Body fat distributions were measured via dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and analyzed with 14 DXA-derived indices. The association between body fat distributions and risk of T2DM in women with a history of GDM was assessed using multivariable logistic regression. RESULTS: We found th

Assessment of body fat distribution by ultrasound as a risk factor for mortality and readmission in patients admitted for sepsis.

BACKGROUND: Sepsis is a serious condition with high mortality. Body fat can influence the production of inflammatory cytokines at the systemic level, leading to adverse outcomes; therefore, the distribution of body fat may have prognostic value. The objective is to evaluate whether there is a relationship between the distribution of body fat measured by ultrasound and prognosis in patients admitted with sepsis. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted in patients admitted for sepsis at a Spanish hospital between September 2023 and June 2024. The risk of mortality and readmission at 3
