Global Patterns, Temporal Trends, and Potential Non-Infectious Risk Factors for Burkitt Lymphoma from 1990 to 2021.

BACKGROUND: The heterogeneity in the health burden and non-infectious risk factors of Burkitt lymphoma (BL) across sex, age, and geographic distribution remain inadequately understood. METHODS: Based on Global Burden of Disease study 2021, we estimate the health burden of BL from four metrics: incidence, mortality, prevalence, and disability-adjusted life years. Subgroups were stratified by age, sex, region, and socio-demographic index (SDI). Joinpoint regression was used to evaluate the average annual percentage change (AAPC) to quantify trends in the health burden. Predictions were performe

Using Household Consumption and Expenditures Survey (HCES) data to assess dietary intake in relation to the nutrition transition: a case study from Cape Verde.

BACKGROUND: Few surveys of food and nutrient intakes are conducted at the individual level in low- and middle-income countries, whereas Household Consumption and Expenditures Surveys (HCES) are regularly carried out to monitor economic conditions. Because of the paucity of individual-level data, there is interest in using HCES to aid in the design of food and nutrition policies. OBJECTIVE: Data from the 2001/02 HCES from Cape Verde were used to assess household dietary intakes in the context of the country's nutrition transition. METHODS: The survey included weighed measurements of household

Manifestations of inflammatory bowel disease in patients of Haitian and Cape Verdean descent.

OBJECTIVE: Several studies have reported unique ethnic phenotypes of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). An appreciation of disease manifestations in different populations may improve clinical outcomes. There are no studies examining IBD in patients of Haitian or Cape Verdean descent. We sought to define the IBD phenotype in these populations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective review comparing Haitian and Cape Verdean immigrant IBD patients to Caucasians, all receiving care at Boston Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. The following variables were analyzed: family histor

Post-transfusion Malaria in Morocco and Non-endemic African Countries: A Systematic Review of Reported Cases.

Malaria remains a major global health problem, particularly in Africa. Although transmission is primarily vector-borne, Plasmodium can also be transmitted through blood transfusion, resulting in post-transfusion malaria (PTM). PTM is typically linked to asymptomatic parasitemia in donors and, while uncommon, may be rapidly progressive and potentially fatal. We conducted a systematic review to summarize published PTM cases in African countries considered non-endemic and to identify risk factors and prevention gaps relevant to transfusion services. We searched PubMed/MEDLINE, Google Scholar, and

Global, Regional, and National Burden of Female Infertility Attributable to Chlamydia Infections, 1990-2023: An Analysis Based on the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023.

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia infection, the most common bacterial sexually transmitted infection worldwide, frequently leads to tubal infertility. With the rising global prevalence of female infertility, the World Health Organization has highlighted untreated sexually transmitted infections as a preventable cause. Chlamydia has been identified as a leading contributor to infertility attributable to sexually transmitted infections; however, comprehensive and up-to-date estimates specifically focused on chlamydia-attributable female infertility remain limited. This study aimed to quantify the global, r

Horizontal Gaze Palsy and Progressive Scoliosis With ROBO 3 Mutations in Patients From Cape Verde.

Horizontal gaze palsy with progressive scoliosis (HGPPS) is a rare and autosomal recessive syndrome. We describe 2 cases of HGPPS which are the first documented in patients of African ancestry from an isolated population in Cape Verde. They demonstrated typical findings on neuro-ophthalmic examination and brain magnetic resonance imaging. One patient had novel heterozymous mutations of the ROB0 3 gene.

Building resilience against the growing threat of arboviruses: a scoping review of Aedes vector surveillance, control strategies and insecticide resistance in Africa.

BACKGROUND: The number of reports of arboviral outbreaks is increasing and, consequently, the need for effective surveillance and vector control plans for Aedes-borne diseases is becoming more urgent. To explore the current state of knowledge of Aedes arbovirus vectors in Africa, we reviewed studies published between 1980 and 2023 that involved Aedes vector surveillance, vector control or insecticide resistance, with the aim to synthesize information and identify knowledge gaps to guide future Aedes research and control in Africa. METHODS: Studies conducted in Africa and published between 198

Impact of population ageing on cancer-related disability-adjusted life years: A global decomposition analysis.

BACKGROUND: As the global population ages, the burden of cancer is increasing. We aimed to assess the impact of population ageing on cancer-related disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). METHODS: We used the decomposition method to estimate the impact of ageing, population growth, and epidemiological change on cancer-related DALYs from 1990 to 2019, stratified by 204 countries/territories and by their sociodemographic index (SDI). This approach separates the net effect of population ageing from population growth and change in age-specific DALY rates. RESULTS: Cancer-related DALYs among indi

Global burden of 292 causes of death in 204 countries and territories and 660 subnational locations, 1990-2023: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023.

BACKGROUND: Timely and comprehensive analyses of causes of death stratified by age, sex, and location are essential for shaping effective health policies aimed at reducing global mortality. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2023 provides cause-specific mortality estimates measured in counts, rates, and years of life lost (YLLs). GBD 2023 aimed to enhance our understanding of the relationship between age and cause of death by quantifying the probability of dying before age 70 years (70q0) and the mean age at death by cause and sex. This study enables comparis
