Life Cycle Assessment in the Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification of Land-Based Carbon Dioxide Removal: Gaps and Opportunities.

Life cycle assessment (LCA) has been widely used to evaluate the carbon negativity and environmental impacts of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) pathways. Various monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) protocols have been developed to assess the carbon credits of CDR projects within voluntary and compliant carbon markets. Many MRV protocols incorporate life cycle thinking, LCA methods, and data. This perspective examined recent LCA studies and MRV protocols published by main carbon registries, focusing on four critical land-based CDR methods: bioenergy combined with carbon capture and stora

A Dynamic Succession-Based Life-Cycle Simulation Model for Projecting Carbon Source-Sink Transitions in Urban Plant Communities.

Urban plant communities are widely regarded as important nature-based solutions for climate mitigation, yet their actual carbon benefits remain uncertain: vegetation growth is accompanied by carbon emissions from construction and long-term maintenance, and existing assessments rarely integrate community succession, interspecific competition, and maintenance-related emissions within a consistent life-cycle framework. To address these limitations, this study developed a dynamic succession-based life-cycle simulation model to project the 50-year carbon source-sink transitions of 150 typical urban

Integrating soil organic carbon loss into building life cycle assessment and urban planning: implications for urban sustainability practice.

Urban expansion depletes soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks through topsoil disturbance, removal, and sealing, contributing to carbon emissions and climate change. However, SOC considerations are largely absent from urban sustainability practice. This study integrates SOC loss into two distinct assessment domains-urban planning and building life cycle assessment (LCA)-to evaluate its magnitude at both the urban and building levels and investigate potential pathways to mitigate it. At the urban level, a business-as-usual urban expansion scenario for Auckland, New Zealand, is modelled and compared

Life cycle assessment of soil carbon dynamics in peach and olive cultivation in Greece: Implementing nature-based solutions.

Carbon sequestration is a natural process that removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and stores it in plant biomass, soils, oceans, and geological formations- a very important process for reducing greenhouse gas concentrations, mitigating climate change and improving soil health. This study explores the environmental impact of implementing Nature Based Solutions (NBSs) in peach orchards and olive groves in Greece, using a cradle-to-farm-gate Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach. It specifically examines the chemical, physical, and soil conditions necessary for humification and organic car

From thaw till fall: Interacting hydrology, carbon cycle, and greenhouse gas dynamics in a subarctic stream-lake continuum.

Carbon-water interaction studies between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems are especially needed today in Arctic and Boreal regions, as they are facing drastic warming and precipitation shifts. Despite the importance of streams in the carbon cycle, northern stream-based studies are scarce, owing to a lack of measurements throughout the north, and possibly skewing global greenhouse gas estimates. We used a combination of multiscale measurements to quantify water sources (H2O isotope proxies), carbon availability (dissolved in/organic carbon concentrations) and quality (water absorbance, SUVA25

Airway exposure to multi-walled carbon nanotubes disrupts the female reproductive cycle without affecting pregnancy outcomes in mice.

BACKGROUND: The use of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) is increasing due to a growing use in a variety of products across several industries. Thus, occupational exposure is also of increasing concern, particularly since airway exposure to MWCNTs can induce sustained pulmonary acute phase response and inflammation in experimental animals, which may affect female reproduction. This proof-of-principle study therefore aimed to investigate if lung exposure by intratracheal instillation of the MWCNT NM-400 would affect the estrous cycle and reproductive function in female mice. RESULTS: Estrou

Life cycle assessment of recycling food-contaminated polylactic acid packaging: net-energy, carbon emissions, and cost-based scenario assessment.

This study presents a goal-oriented life cycle assessment of end-of-life strategies for food-contaminated polylactic acid (PLA) packaging, an increasingly prevalent waste stream driven by the growth of food delivery services. Using empirically measured contamination data from 100 delivery meals, four recycling pathways (five scenarios) were evaluated: thermal recycling, mechanical recycling, chemical recycling, and anaerobic digestion (AD)-based systems. Net energy balance, non-biogenic CO2 emissions (CO2E), and daily operational cost (OpCost) were quantified for a functional unit of one day o

Environmental evaluation of wood-based remodeling in aging buildings focusing on indoor air quality and life-cycle carbon emissions.

The application of wood-based interior finishes in building remodeling is increasing; however, empirical evidence regarding their impacts on indoor air quality (IAQ) under real-world conditions remains limited. This study evaluates IAQ changes before and after wood-based remodeling through mock-up testing and field measurements conducted in two contrasting buildings: an occupied childcare facility (SB1) and an unoccupied university classroom (SB2). Mock-up experiments characterized baseline emissions from softwood materials, identifying monoterpene hydrocarbons particularly α-pinene as the dom

Closing the Loop in the Carbon Cycle: Enzymatic Reactions Housed in Metal-Organic Frameworks for CO2 Conversion to Methanol.

The preparation of value-added chemicals from carbon dioxide (CO2) can act as a way of reducing the greenhouse gas from the atmosphere. Industrially significant C1 chemicals like methanol (CH3OH), formic acid (HCOOH), and formaldehyde (HCHO) can be formed from CO2. One sustainable way of achieving this is by connecting the reactions catalyzed by the enzymes formate dehydrogenase (FDH), formaldehyde dehydrogenase (FALDH), and alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) into a single cascade reaction where CO2 is hydrogenated to CH3OH. For this to be adaptable for industrial use, the enzymes should be immobiliz

Low-temperature destruction of carbon tetrachloride over lanthanide oxide-based catalysts: from destructive adsorption to a catalytic reaction cycle.

The catalytic destruction of carbon tetrachloride in the presence of steam, CCl(4) + 2 H(2)O-->4 HCl + CO(2), was investigated at 200-350 degrees C over a series of lanthanide (La, Ce, Pr and Nd) and alkaline-earth metal (Mg, Ca, Sr and Ba) oxide-based catalysts with kinetic experiments, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and DFT calculations. This new catalytic reaction was achieved by combining destructive adsorption of CCl(4) on a basic oxide surface and concurrent dechlorination of the resulting partially chlorinated solid by steam. Transcriptomic differences in chromatin and cell cycle regulation in A549 cells after irradiation with carbon ions and X-rays.

INTRODUCTION: High-linear energy transfer (LET) radiation such as carbon ions exhibits greater biological effectiveness than conventional low-LET X-rays, but the transcriptional mechanisms underlying this advantage remain incompletely understood. We hypothesized that high-LET radiation induces a qualitatively different transcriptional response rather than simply amplifying low-LET signaling. METHODS: A549 non-small cell lung cancer cells were exposed to equal physical doses (8 Gy) of X-rays or carbon ions (LET 73 keV/µm), and transcriptomic profiling was performed 4 h post-irradiation. Fe-Mn MOF-derived modified carbon felt cathode: Accelerating iron redox cycle for efficient electro-Fenton degradation of nanoplastics.

Micro/nano plastics (M/NPs), as enduring worldwide environmental contaminants, present significant risks to aquatic ecosystems and human health. The electro-Fenton process demonstrates significant application potential; however, traditional electro-Fenton systems are hindered by sluggish Fe3 +/Fe2+ redox cycling, inadequate electrical conductivity, and restricted pH tolerance. This study fabricates a stable Fe/Mn-MOF-derived modified carbon felt (FeMn@CF-600) and employs it as the cathode for heterogeneous electro-Fenton process. Manganese doping endows it with abundant micropores and more exp

Temperature-Pressure Swing Process for Reactive Carbon Capture and Conversion to Methanol: Techno-Economic Analysis and Life Cycle Assessment.

A model was developed to conduct techno-economic analysis (TEA) and life cycle assessment (LCA) for reactive carbon capture (RCC) and conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) to methanol. This RCC process is compared to a baseline commercialized flue gas CO2 hydrogenation process. An ASPEN model was combined with existing TEA and LCA models into a larger TEA/LCA framework in Python. From preliminary experimental data, the model found a levelized cost of $0.79/kg methanol for the baseline process and $0.99/kg for the RCC process. The cradle-to-gate carbon intensity of the baseline process was 0.50 kg

Maternal vitamin D deficiency increases the thromboxane/prostacyclin ratio through alterations in the one-carbon cycle in Wistar rats.

This study aims to test the hypothesis that vitamin D deficiency can influence long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid metabolism through alterations in the one-carbon cycle. Wistar rats (n = 8 per group) were given either a control (1,000 IU D3/kg diet) or a vitamin D deficient (VDD) (0 IU D3/kg diet) diet from pre-pregnancy to delivery. On day 20 of gestation, pregnant female rats were delivered by C-section to collect placenta and blood. VDD group demonstrated high serum parathyroid hormone, low serum phosphate, low plasma folate, higher plasma homocysteine, and higher plasma malondialdehyde

Urbanisation accelerates carbon cycling and greenhouse gas emissions along a river-ocean continuum in the humid subtropics.

Carbon is constantly transported from the land into the ocean via rivers, and urbanisation accelerates this process. Meanwhile, greenhouse gas emissions from rivers are expected to be significant, but precise drivers remain poorly understood. In this year-long study, we focused on the Lam Tsuen River and its estuary in Hong Kong to investigate how carbon was cycled in the urbanised river-ocean continuum. Compared to the natural upland sites, the urbanised lowland sites were found to have significantly higher concentrations of both dissolved organic carbon (DOC; mean: 2.9 mg L-1 and 0.9 mg L-1

Coupled effects of glyphosate on soil carbon cycling regulated by dose, time, and environment: A global meta-analysis.

Glyphosate (GLY) is the most widely used herbicide worldwide, yet its effects on microbially mediated soil carbon-cycling processes remain controversial. Using random-effects meta-analysis, machine-learning interpretation, and path modeling, this study integrates 1099 paired observations from 103 studies worldwide to systematically evaluate how GLY exposure conditions and initial soil physicochemical properties jointly modulate soil carbon cycling responses. Across all observations included in the meta-analysis, GLY increased soil CO2 emission by 16.32% and soil organic carbon (SOC) by 9.98% o

Degradation dynamics of saflufenacil and tiafenacil in agricultural soils and their impacts on soil microbial networks and carbon-nitrogen cycling.

Herbicides are vital for sustaining global crop production; however, the limited understanding of their residual effects on soil microbial interactions and ecosystem processes leads to an underestimation of their long-term ecological risks to agricultural soil health. This study investigated the degradation dynamics of two novel PPO-inhibiting herbicides, saflufenacil and tiafenacil, and their impacts on microbial networks and carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycling across five contrasting agricultural soils. Both herbicides dissipated rapidly, with half-lives ranging from 0.8 to 4.1 days, and deg

Global CO2 sequestration potential of recycled aggregates: Modeling, life cycle analysis, and accelerated carbonation strategies.

Recycled aggregates (RAs) carbonation shows great potential for CO2 reduction. This study developed a CO2 sequestration model for RAs based on the conservation of carbonated elements, considering the service-life, production, and storage stages of RAs. Moreover, the uncertainty analysis was conducted on the predicted CO2 sequestration. The results indicate that the annual CO2 sequestration in the service-life stage rises rapidly before 2048, then slows with a gradual and fluctuating increase. The mean value of carbon emissions of RAs' production with one-time crushing method is 2.5 kg CO2 /t R
