Reducing carbon footprint in high H2S emissions: A synergistic microalgal-bacterial solution for sugarcane biorefineries.

Sugarcane vinasse, a major by-product of ethanol production, poses environmental and health risks due to its high sulfate content, promoting severe hydrogen sulfide (H2S) formation (up to 50,000 ppmv) during acidogenic fermentation. The resulting H2S and high carbon dioxide (CO2) levels in off-gas create serious hazards, often leading to conventional desulfurization systems' clogging and high maintenance. This study is the first to investigate a Chloroidium-based combined microalgal-bacterial (CMB) system for simultaneous, high-strength H2S abatement and CO2 sequestration from these challengin

Reducing the carbon footprint of cataract surgery: co-creating solutions with a departmental Delphi process.

BACKGROUND: Climate change is arguably the greatest threat to global health of the 21st century. Although cataract surgery is a major contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions, recent literature review identified a paucity of evidence-based strategies for improving the environmental impact of cataract services. Our study aimed to assess the effectiveness of a departmental Delphi process for improving cataract services' environmental sustainability. METHODS: All members of ophthalmology theatre teams in a UK teaching hospital were invited to participate in a three-stage Delphi process. Te

Improving cancer care while reducing its carbon footprint: GHG-mitigating strategies highlighted at ESMO 2025.

BACKGROUND: The environmental impact of cancer care is an emerging concern, yet therapeutic strategies that may incidentally reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions remain poorly described. The 2025 ESMO Congress, where nearly 3000 abstracts were presented, offered an opportunity to identify clinically validated approaches that could lower the carbon footprint of oncology. METHODS: All abstracts from the 2025 ESMO Congress were reviewed. Studies suggesting meaningful downstream reductions in drug use, visit frequency, treatment duration, or overall care intensity were selected. For each, GHG em

Virtual joint school prior to hip and knee arthroplasty: patient feedback and carbon footprint savings.

INTRODUCTION: Patient education programmes prior to hip and knee arthroplasty reduce anxiety and create realistic expectations. We describe a 'virtual joint school' (VJS) model and analyse patient feedback and environmental impact. METHODS: Eligible patients first viewed online educational videos, and then attended an interactive virtual session during which knowledge was reinforced. Each session was attended by eight to ten patients along with a relative or friend, and was hosted by a multidisciplinary team consisting of nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and a former patient

Optimizing EU carbon footprint tracking: A low-energy blockchain approach with Proof of Elapsed Time.

Carbon dioxide (CO2), responsible for over 80% of greenhouse gas emissions, necessitates urgent global climate action. To address this, organizations must accurately measure and offset their carbon footprints. Blockchain technology offers a promising solution by ensuring data transparency, traceability, and integrity in emission tracking. Despite concerns about its energy use, Blockchain enhances accountability in carbon footprint assessments, particularly in industrialized European Union (EU) countries. This paper focuses on the Proof of Elapsed Time (PoET) algorithm, a low-energy consensus m

Multidimensional Inequality of CO2 and Air Pollutant Footprints in China under Dual-Carbon Policy.

Economic inequality plays an important role in pollution control and sustainable development, yet the inequalities of CO2 and air pollutant emissions remain unknown under China's dual-carbon policy. Here we construct a comprehensive framework to quantitatively evaluate inequalities and evolution in individual CO2 and air pollutant footprints in China for 2020-2060. Results show that the per capita footprint of the top 10% is the highest (CO2, 28.5 t; NOx, 50.6 kg), whereas that of the bottom 50% is the lowest (CO2, 1.2 t; NOx, 4.7 kg). Over 90% of inequality in individual footprints is attribu

Carbon footprint dataset of concrete based on field surveys at commercial mixing plants in Shandong, China.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from concrete have grown rapidly, ranking second after the power sector. Current emission factors often overlook regional heterogeneity. To bridge this knowledge gap, this study takes Shandong Province, a typical region in China, as a case study. Considering the difference in geography, history, culture, and economic development, Shandong is divided into five subregions: Eastern, Western, Southern, Northern, and Central Shandong. This study developed a fundamental carbon footprint dataset of concrete by collecting 993 mix proportions of strength grades (C25-C60)
