Reduced graphene oxide and PEG-grafted TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanocrystal reinforced poly-lactic acid nanocomposite film for biomedical application.

In this work, both cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) were reinforced into poly-lactic acid (PLA) to enhance the stiffness, strength and thermal stability of the pure polymer i.e. PLA. To enhance the uniform dispersion of CNC (which is a major concern with PLA) and rGO in the hydrophobic polymer matrix, CNC's surface was first modified using TEMPO (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl radical) oxidation method followed by surface grafting of TEMPO-oxidized CNC (TOCNC) performed with polyethylene glycol (PEG). The PEG-grafting on crystalline region of cellulose nanofi

Practical Suggestions for Prevention of Complications Arising from Oxidized Cellulose Retention: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND Bleeding is a major intraoperative complication during surgical procedures. When conventional methods such as ligature and diathermocoagulation are ineffective for bleeding management, hemostatic agents should be used. Oxidized cellulose is one of the major hemostatic agents used worldwide. Oxidized cellulose is often left in situ after hemostasis because of its high level of reabsorption that lasts up to 8 weeks. However, 38 cases of retaining-associated complications are reported in the literature. CASE REPORT A 51-year-old male patient presented in our emergency department with a

Successful closure of a bladder neck fistula complicated by urethral and vaginal stenosis, using oxidized cellulose (Surgicel) for reinforcement.

We describe a case of a bladder neck fistula in a 25-year-old lady presenting with true urinary incontinence, vaginal constriction and induration, with vaginal length reduced to only 1.5 cm. There was an 8-mm fistula involving upper urethra and bladder neck, with fibrosis all around. Using Schuchardt incision, the fistula was reached and mobilization tried. As there was less available tissue, a 3 x 2-cm layer of oxidized cellulose was stitched between the bladder and the vaginal mucosa for reinforcement and to achieve a watertight closure of fistula.

Topical oxidized regenerated cellulose for perioperative blood management in total hip and knee arthroplasty: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA) are established procedures for end-stage joint disease, but perioperative blood loss remains a practical concern. Oxidized regenerated cellulose (ORC) has been used as a local hemostatic material during arthroplasty; however, its comparative value in contemporary blood-management protocols remains uncertain. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, and Scopus were searched from inception to March 2026. Randomized controlled trials and comparative observational studies were eligible if they evaluated ORC in THA or

pH regulation of 1,2-bis(trimethoxysilyl)ethane hydrolysis pathways for enhanced wet state stability of TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofiber aerogels.

2,2,6,6-Tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO)-oxidized cellulose nanofiber (TOCNF) aerogels suffer from poor wet-state structural stability, limiting their applications in aqueous environments. Herein, a pH-regulated silane crosslinking strategy using 1,2-bis(trimethoxysilyl)ethane (BTMSE) was developed to fabricate wet-state mechanically durable and water-stable TOCNF aerogels. To avoid acid-induced aggregation of TOCNF suspensions, BTMSE was pre-hydrolyzed under different pH conditions before mixing with TOCNF dispersions. The pre-hydrolysis pH regulated the competition between cellulose-sila

Use of Oxidized Regenerated Cellulose (ORC)/Collagen/Silver-ORC Dressings Alone or Subsequent to Advanced Wound Therapies in Complex Wounds.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic or senescent wounds are difficult to heal and often require a multimodal treatment plan. Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) or advanced wound dressings, such as oxidized regenerated cellulose (ORC)/collagen/silver-ORC dressings, can be used to promote granulation tissue development and stimulate wound healing in these complex wounds. OBJECTIVE: This article examines the use of ORC/collagen/silver-ORC dressings alone or subsequent to advanced wound therapies in a retrospective cohort of 24 patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Wounds were assessed upon presentation. If ne

An iron oxide nanoparticle-phosphorylated cellulose nanofiber-graphene oxide composite for electrochemical determination of chloramphenicol.

This work presents the development, characterization, and partial analytical method validation of a non-enzymatic electrochemical sensor based on a nanocomposite comprising iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), phosphorylated cellulose nanofibers (pCNF), and graphene oxide (GO) for the determination of chloramphenicol (CAP) by square-wave adsorptive stripping voltammetry. The MNPs@pCNF-GO composite was synthesized and deposited onto a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) by drop-casting, forming an MNPs@pCNF-GO-modified GCE (MNPs@pCNF-GO-GCE). The successful formation and morphological, structura

In Vivo Safety Characterization of Injectable Amidated TEMPO-Oxidized Cellulose Nanofiber Hydrogel Vaccine Formulations in Farmed Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar L.).

Background: Disease outbreaks remain a major constraint on aquaculture production, making vaccination essential for disease management in farmed fish. However, injectable oil-adjuvanted vaccines can be costly and may induce adverse inflammatory reactions and welfare concerns, motivating investigations into alternative injectable adjuvant materials. Methods: We conducted an in vivo safety evaluation of shear-thinning, amidated TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofiber (TO-CNF) hydrogels formulated with an inactivated Vibrio anguillarum bacterin. Formulations were administered intraperitoneally to Atla

A low-cost and simple method to stop intraoperative leakage-type bleeding: use of the vancomycin-oxidized regenerated cellulose (ORC) sandwich.

Intraoperative bleeding may cause life-threatening complications in patients if such bleeding cannot be brought under control. Various materials are available for stopping such bleeding. However, there are some difficulties in the acquisition and application of these materials. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficiency of the low-cost and simple-to-prepare vancomycin-oxidized regenerated cellulose (ORC) sandwich in surgical bleeding control. Thirty New Zealand rabbits were used for this purpose. The animals were separated into three groups as group 1 (n = 10), control group; grou

Colon-targeted probiotic delivery system based on oxidized konjac glucomannan/thiolated chitosan/bacterial cellulose: Enhanced survival, mucoadhesion, and gut microbiota modulation.

Probiotics play a critical role in maintaining human health homeostasis, yet their oral delivery faces challenges due to poor gastrointestinal survival, uncontrolled release, and inefficient targeted colonization. To address these limitations, we developed colon-targeted mucoadhesive (sCS-BC)/OKGM-SA microspheres using a W1/O/W2 double emulsion technique combined with ionic crosslinking, employing oxidized konjac glucomannan (OKGM), thiolated chitosan (sCS), and bacterial cellulose (BC). In vitro digestion assays revealed that the microspheres effectively shielded probiotics under simulated ga

Oxidized Regenerated Cellulose can be a Cause of False Tumor Recurrence on PET/CT in Patients with Lung Cancer Treated Surgically.

OBJECTIVES: Regular follow-up of patients with lung cancer treated surgically is crucial to detect local recurrence or distant metastasis of the tumor. Postoperative follow-ups are performed with thorax computed tomography (CT) and, if necessary, positron emission tomography (PET)/CT. Sometimes, inflammatory tissue reactions due to the materials used during the surgery for hemostasis may cause the appearance of tumor recurrence in imaging modalities. In this study, we presented that oxidized regenerated cellulose (ORC) used intraoperatively may cause false tumor recurrence on PET/CT. METHODS:

Molecular modeling characterization of cellulose and chitosan metal oxide hybrid interfaces.

The interfacial electronic structure of biopolymer-metal oxide hybrids determine their stability, yet this structure is still not well understood. Here, we report a density functional theory study of 10 model systems consisting of cellulose and chitosan functionalized with ZnO and V2O5 separately and in ternary combination at the B3LYP/SDD level. According to frontier molecular orbital analysis, hybridization reduces the energy gap in the ternary composites from 7.106 eV for cellulose and 6.908 eV for chitosan to 3.559 eV and 3.496 eV, while the dipole moment increases from 0.536 D to 26.697 D
