Relation between intracranial volume and the surface area of the foramen magnum.

Several investigators have estimated the intracranial volume (ICV) in the past which indirectly reflects the brain volume. Most of these studies have been made on the dry skulls using linear dimensions, packing methods or occasionally radiological methods. It is also reported that the etiology of cerebellar tonsillar herniation is closely related to the size of the foramen magnum (FM). In the present study the ICVs have been estimated in 28 dry skulls using filling water method and the surface area of FMs were measured planimetry method. The estimated mean ICV was 1,311 +/- 133 cm. Surface are

Evaluation of velopharyngeal closure by 4D imaging using 320-detector-row computed tomography.

OBJECTIVE: Current imaging techniques for velopharyngeal closure (VPC) evaluation are two-dimensional, static, or distressing, thus necessitating multiple procedures to understand this three-dimensional and dynamic area. We validated the use of a novel four-dimensional (4D) computed tomography (CT) technique for the morphological and kinematic evaluation of VPC in cleft palate patients based on dynamic volume scanning with 320-detector-row CT. METHODS: Five patients aged 4-10 years (40% males) with persistent velopharyngeal insufficiency post palatoplasty underwent conventional tests (cephalo

The use of cephalometric landmarks with 3-dimensional volumetric computer modeling to position an auricular implant surgical template: a clinical report.

The number of tools available to make a correctly positioned surgical guide for auricular implant placement is rapidly expanding as advances in 3-dimensional computer modeling continue. While the correct orientation of a missing auricle previously relied solely on soft tissue topography, computer modeling software now allows for navigational viewing of hard tissue and cephalometric landmarks. This clinical report describes a technique to establish the orientation of an auricular surgical guide incorporating the use of fundamental cephalometry. Cephalometry as a treatment planning tool has been

The diagnosis and management of intrauterine growth retardation.

Twenty-eight pregnant patients exhibiting subnormal fetal growth patterns by serial ultrasonic cephalometry were studied. Only 12 (43%) delivered small-for-gestational-age (SGA) infants indicating a poor correlation between the prenatal assessment of intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) by ultrasonic cephalometry and the neonatal evaluation of the newborn as SGA. The most important factors in the evaluation of the fetus with subnormal serial ultrasonic cephalometry were: 1) the type of ultrasonic growth pattern ("late flattening" vs "low growth profile"), 2) the presence or absence of matern

Validity and reproducibility of cephalometric measurements obtained from digital photographs of analogue headfilms.

UNLABELLED: The emerging market of digital cephalographs and computerized cephalometry is overwhelming the need to examine the advantages and drawbacks of manual cephalometry, meanwhile, small offices continue to benefit from the economic efficacy and ease of use of analogue cephalograms. The use of modern cephalometric software requires import of digital cephalograms or digital capture of analogue data: scanning and digital photography. The validity of digital photographs of analogue headfilms rather than original headfilms in clinical practice has not been well established. Digital photograp

Morphological variety of the soft palate in normal individuals: a digital cephalometric study.

OBJECTIVES: The literature describes the morphology of the soft palate as being of only one kind and ignores its diversity, but in our clinical work we discovered that the morphology of the soft palate has a variable presentation on lateral cephalometry. The aim of our study was to investigate the variation of the velar morphology. METHODS: In this study, the sample comprised 200 normal subjects whose ages ranged from 5-48 years (mean 19.37 years). The morphology of the soft palate on lateral cephalometry was examined and classified into six types. The dimensional differences of the soft pala

Reference values for craniofacial structures in children 4 to 6 years old: review of the literature.

This review article addresses the question as to what methods can be used to investigate cranial structure and growth development in children 4 to 6 years old, and what the relevant reference values are for this age group. We screened the literature for epidemiological, longitudinal and cross-sectional studies investigating healthy children 4 to 6 years old without abnormalities and orthodontic therapy. Radiographic cephalometry is a practical, valid tool for analyzing craniofacial structure and growth processes. But it has several disadvantages, including the use of ionizing radiation, measur

Cephalometric analysis in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome.

Cephalometry is useful as a screening test for anatomical abnormalities in patients having obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. In this study, various conventional parameters in cephalometry, such as the distance and angles determining the oropharyngeal space, and the areas of the soft palate, oral cavity, tongue and pharynx in both posterior-anterior and lateral view X-ray films, were measured before and after surgery in order to evaluate the preoperative predictability and usefulness of uvulopalato-pharyngoplasty and/or midline laser glossectomy (MLG) for the purpose of preoperative assessment

Evaluation of the upper airway in obstructive sleep apnoea.

The evaluation of the upper airway (UA) includes the physical examination of pharyngeal structures and a number of imaging techniques that vary from the mostly used lateral cephalometry and computed tomography to more sophisticated methods such as tri-dimensional magnetic resonance image (MRI). Other complex techniques addressing UA collapsibility assessed by measurement of pharyngeal critical pressure and negative expiratory pressure however are not routinely performed. These methods provide information about anatomic abnormalities and the level of pharyngeal narrowing or collapse while the p

New 3-dimensional cephalometric analysis for orthognathic surgery.

Two basic problems have been associated with traditional 2-dimensional cephalometry. First, many important parameters cannot be measured on plain cephalograms; and second, most 2-dimensional cephalometric measurements are distorted in the presence of facial asymmetry. Three-dimensional cephalometry, which has been facilitated by the introduction of cone-beam computed tomography, can solve these problems. However, before this can be realized, fundamental problems must be solved. These include the unreliability of internal reference systems and some 3-dimensional measurements, and the lack of to
