Vagal representation in the cerebellum of the cat.

The cervical vagus nerve (VN) was electrically stimulated in Nembutal-anaesthetized cats. The responses recorded from the cerebellar surface were found in lob. V and VI in a bilateral sagittal strip perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the folia. At a longer latency, potentials were also found in the paramedian lobule. Field potential analysis confirmed the existence of a sagittal strip in the deep parts of the lobules. The distribution of these potentials and their field potential profiles indicate that they are transmitted through the climbing fiber (CF) system. Experiments with local a

Potential for Reinforcement Learning in the Cerebellum.

This article explores how simple reinforcement learning algorithms might be implemented by the anatomy of the cerebellum. In doing this, we highlight which anatomical and physiological details are most important for assessing algorithmic fit, and we discuss which algorithm components are easiest to accommodate in a neural system. We describe hypothetical cerebellar implementations of four reinforcement learning algorithms and discuss the anatomical plausibility of the various components required. We show how one of the algorithms can learn to generate short sequences of actions without continu

A journey through the anatomy of the cerebellum.

The present narrative review delves into the multifaceted roles of the cerebellum, highlighting its significance beyond traditional motor functions to encompass cognitive and behavior-related processes, as evidenced by advancements in functional neuroimaging. We provide a comprehensive summary of the cerebellum's embryological development, intricate microanatomy, macroanatomy, and vascular anatomy of the cerebellum, revealing how these aspects contribute to its unique circuitry and operational capabilities. A non-systematic literature search was conducted using the PubMed database, focusing on

Social and emotional learning in the cerebellum.

The posterior cerebellum has a critical role in human social and emotional learning. Three systems and related neural networks support this cerebellar function: a biological action observation system as part of an extended sensorimotor integration network, a mentalizing system for understanding a person's mental and emotional state subserved by a mentalizing network, and a limbic network supporting core emotional (dis)pleasure and arousal processes. In this Review, I describe how these systems and networks support social and emotional learning via functional reciprocal connections initiating a

The cerebellum and cognitive neural networks.

Cognitive function represents a complex neurophysiological capacity of the human brain, encompassing a higher level of neural processing and integration. It is widely acknowledged that the cerebrum plays a commanding role in the regulation of cognitive functions. However, the specific role of the cerebellum in cognitive processes has become a subject of considerable scholarly intrigue. In 1998, Schmahmann first proposed the concept of "cognitive affective syndrome (CCAS)," linking cerebellar damage to cognitive and emotional impairments. Since then, a substantial body of literature has emerged

The Cerebellum in Musicology: a Narrative Review.

The cerebellum is involved in cognitive procressing including music perception and music production. This narrative review aims to summarize the current knowledge on the activation of the cerebellum by different musical stimuli, on the involvement of the cerebellum in cognitive loops underlying the analysis of music, and on the role of the cerebellum in the motor network underlying music production. A possible role of the cerebellum in therapeutic settings is also briefly discussed. In a second part, the cerebellum as object of musicology (i.e., in classical music, in contemporary music, cereb

Deciphering the Role of Klf10 in the Cerebellum.

Recent studies have demonstrated a new role for Klf10, a Krüppel-like transcription factor, in skeletal muscle, specifically relating to mitochondrial function. Thus, it was of interest to analyze additional tissues that are highly reliant on optimal mitochondrial function such as the cerebellum and to decipher the role of Klf10 in the functional and structural properties of this brain region. In vivo (magnetic resonance imaging and localized spectroscopy, behavior analysis) and in vitro (histology, spectroscopy analysis, enzymatic activity) techniques were applied to comprehensively assess th

Organization of the ventricular zone of the cerebellum.

The roof of the fourth ventricle (4V) is located on the ventral part of the cerebellum, a region with abundant vascularization and cell heterogeneity that includes tanycyte-like cells that define a peculiar glial niche known as ventromedial cord. This cord is composed of a group of biciliated cells that run along the midline, contacting the ventricular lumen and the subventricular zone. Although the complex morphology of the glial cells composing the cord resembles to tanycytes, cells which are known for its proliferative capacity, scarce or non-proliferative activity has been evidenced in thi

A Breakdown of Immune Tolerance in the Cerebellum.

Cerebellar dysfunction can be associated with ataxia, dysarthria, dysmetria, nystagmus and cognitive deficits. While cerebellar dysfunction can be caused by vascular, traumatic, metabolic, genetic, inflammatory, infectious, and neoplastic events, the cerebellum is also a frequent target of autoimmune attacks. The underlying cause for this vulnerability is unclear, but it may be a result of region-specific differences in blood-brain barrier permeability, the high concentration of neurons in the cerebellum and the presence of autoantigens on Purkinje cells. An autoimmune response targeting the c

Cerebellum and Emotion in Social Behavior.

Accumulating evidence suggests that the cerebellum plays a crucial role not only in the motor and cognitive domains but also in emotions and social behavior. In the present chapter, after a general introduction on the significance of the emotional components of social behavior, we describe recent efforts to understand the contributions of the cerebellum in social cognition focusing on the emotional and affective aspects. Specifically, starting from the description of the cerebello-cortical networks subtending the social-affective domains, we illustrate the most recent findings on the social ce

Dysplastic gangliocytoma of the cerebellum in a cat.

A 2.5-year-old cat presented with progressive ataxia and lethargy. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed enlargement of the cerebellum and herniation of cerebellar vermis. Postmortem examination confirmed the MRI findings, and histopathology showed numerous large dysplastic neurons populating and displacing the Purkinje cell layer and extending into the molecular and granular layers of the cerebellum. The lesion was diagnosed as dysplastic gangliocytoma of the cerebellum. In humans, this tumor is often associated with Cowden syndrome, a genetic disorder characterized by multiple hamartomas a
