Absolute arterial cerebral blood volume quantification using inflow vascular-space-occupancy with dynamic subtraction magnetic resonance imaging.

In patients with steno-occlusive disease of the internal carotid artery (ICA), cerebral blood flow may be maintained by autoregulatory increases in arterial cerebral blood volume (aCBV). Therefore, characterizing aCBV may be useful for understanding hemodynamic compensation strategies. A new 'inflow vascular-space-occupancy with dynamic subtraction (iVASO-DS)' MRI approach is presented where aCBV (mL blood/100 mL parenchyma) is quantified without contrast agents using the difference between images with and without inflowing blood water signal. The iVASO-DS contrast mechanism is investigated (3

Quantitative study on cerebral blood volume determined by a near-infrared spectroscopy during postural change in children.

AIM: To investigate changes in cerebral blood volume during standing in healthy children with or without abnormal cardiovascular responses. METHODS: We studied 53 children (age, 10-15 years). Cerebral oxygenated haemoglobin (oxy-Hb) and deoxygenated Hb (deoxy-Hb) were non-invasively and continuously measured using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) (NIRO 300, Hamamatsu Photomedics, Shizuoka, Japan) during active standing. Beat-to-beat arterial pressure was monitored by Portapres. RESULTS: Of 49 children with complete data acquisition, 33 had a normal cardiovascular response to the test (Group

Hemodynamic study of internal carotid artery stenosis and occlusion: value of combined isotopic measurements of regional cerebral blood flow and blood volume.

The assessment of the intracranial hemodynamic consequences of obstructive lesions of the carotid artery by measuring resting rCBF is inadequate because cerebral blood flow may remain constant in spite of significant drops in the intraluminal pressure due to autoregulation. Moreover, flow may be permanently decreased following cerebral infarction, even if the arterial anatomical conditions have resumed their normal state because of the decreased metabolic demand of an infarcted area. Measurement of the regional cerebral blood volume (rCBV) helps with the hemodynamic assessment of these conditi

Prediction of cerebral hyperperfusion after carotid endarterectomy using cerebral blood volume measured by perfusion-weighted MR imaging compared with single-photon emission CT.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Cerebral hyperperfusion syndrome is a rare but serious complication of carotid revascularization, including carotid endarterectomy (CEA) and carotid stent placement, which can occur in patients with preoperative impairments in cerebral hemodynamics. The purpose of this study was to determine whether preoperative cerebral blood volume (CBV) measured by perfusion-weighted MR imaging (PWI) could identify patients at risk for cerebral hyperperfusion after CEA. MATERIALS AND METHODS: CBV was measured by using PWI before CEA in 70 patients with unilateral internal carotid ar

Modelling the overlap and divergence of autistic and schizotypal traits on hippocampal subfield volumes and regional cerebral blood flow.

Psychiatric disorders show high co-morbidity, including co-morbid expressions of subclinical psychopathology across multiple disease spectra. Given the limitations of classical case-control designs in elucidating this overlap, new approaches are needed to identify biological underpinnings of spectra and their interaction. We assessed autistic-like traits (using the Autism Quotient, AQ) and schizotypy - as models of subclinical expressions of disease phenotypes and examined their association with volumes and regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) of anterior, mid- and posterior hippocampus segment

Recanalization and reversal of diffusion abnormalities and markedly reduced cerebral blood volume in a patient with transient ischemic attack.

Resolution of diffusion abnormalities is a finding that is rarely seen in hyperacute cerebral ischemia. We report a serial study of diffusion and perfusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in a case of transient ischemic attack (TIA). In the current case, marked decrease of cerebral blood volume (CBV) as well as reduced diffusion in the affected middle cerebral arterial territory was shown by the initial diffusion and perfusion MRI at 1.5 h after onset. The initial MRI findings as well as neurological symptoms recovered probably due to prompt and spontaneous recanalization of thrombosed vessel

Functional vascular volume and blood-brain barrier permeability images by angio-CT in the diagnosis of cerebral lesions.

We performed angio-CT following i.v. administration of an iodinated contrast medium and analyzed the pixel contrast time-density curves from 4 to 10 min postinjection to derive vascular and volume BBB permeability images. This was performed by applying multiple regression analysis of pixel contrast curves versus blood contrast and integrated blood contrast curves. The two regression coefficients, mapped pixel by pixel, correspond respectively to vascular volume and BBB unidirectional transport rate. Initial application in a small number of normal subjects and patients allowed us to characteriz

Effects of rapid mannitol infusion on cerebral blood volume. A positron emission tomographic study in dogs and man.

Positron emission tomography was used to study the effect of a rapid infusion of mannitol on cerebral blood volume (CBV) in five dogs and in three human subjects. The ability of mannitol to reduce intracranial pressure (ICP) has always been attributed to its osmotic dehydrating effect. The effects of mannitol infusion include increased osmolality, total blood volume, central venous pressure (CVP), and cerebral blood flow, and decreased hematocrit, hemoglobin concentration, serum sodium level, and viscosity. Mannitol's ability to dilate the cerebral vasculature, either directly or indirectly, a

Studies on cerebral oxygen metabolism, blood flow, and blood volume, in patients with hydrocephalus before and after surgical decompression, using positron emission tomography.

Cortical oxygen utilization, oxygen extraction, blood flow, and blood volume, have been measured in patients with hydrocephalus before and after surgical decompression using positron emission tomography (PET). The hydrocephalus subjects fell into two categories: patients with recent-onset obstructive hydrocephalus and symptoms of raised intracranial pressure due to obstruction of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) drainage by posterior fossa or third ventricular cerebral tumours, and patients with hydrocephalus of more insidious onset that was associated either with congenital abnormalities, or which w

Validation of the Charlotte large artery occlusion endovascular therapy outcome score using Viz.ai-derived cerebral blood volume index.

BACKGROUND: The Charlotte large artery occlusion endovascular therapy outcome score (CLEOS) predicts poor 90-day outcomes for patients presenting with internal carotid artery (ICA) or middle cerebral artery (MCA) occlusions. It incorporates RAPID-derived cerebral blood volume (CBV) index, a marker of collateral circulation. We validated the predictive ability of CLEOS with Viz.ai-processed computed tomography perfusion (CTP) imaging. METHODS: The original CLEOS derivation cohort was compared to a validation cohort consisting of all ICA and MCA thrombectomy patients treated at a large health s

Abstinence to chronic methamphetamine switches connectivity between striatal, hippocampal and sensorimotor regions and increases cerebral blood volume response.

Methamphetamine (meth), and other psychostimulants such as cocaine, present a persistent problem for society with chronic users being highly prone to relapse. We show, in a chronic methamphetamine administration model, that discontinuation of drug for more than a week produces much larger changes in overall meth-induced brain connectivity and cerebral blood volume (CBV) response than changes that occur immediately following meth administration. Areas showing the largest changes were hippocampal, limbic striatum and sensorimotor cortical regions as well as brain stem areas including the peduncu

Relationship between early changes in cerebral blood volume and electrocortical activity after hypoxic-ischemic insult in newborn piglets.

BACKGROUND: Early changes in cerebral hemodynamics and depressed electrocortical activity have been reported after a hypoxic-ischemic (HI) insult. However, the relationship between these two parameters is unclear. This study aimed to examine the relationship between changes in cerebral blood volume (CBV) and cerebral Hb oxygen saturation (ScO2) after a HI insult and the low amplitude-integrated electroencephalography (aEEG) duration concomitantly observed. METHODS: Sixteen newborn piglets obtained within 24h of birth were used (n=3 controls). Thirteen piglets were subjected to a HI insult of

Effect of nitric oxide synthase inhibition on cerebral blood flow and injury volume during focal ischemia in cats.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: We tested the hypothesis that inhibition of nitric oxide synthase activity in brain before ischemia alters cerebral blood flow and decreases brain injury after 4 hours of middle cerebral artery occlusion in cats. METHODS: Halothane-anesthetized cats underwent 4 hours of left middle cerebral artery occlusion after they were randomly assigned to receive either intravenous N omega-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester, at a dose that completely inhibited cortical nitric oxide synthase activity (10 mg/kg, n = 10), or an equal volume of diluent (10 mL saline, n = 10).
