PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of sugar-free gum (SFG) with xylitol and sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) on oral cleansing by in vitro tests and a human clinical trial.
METHODS: Hydroxyapatite (HA) discs were pre-treated with SHMP and evaluated for inhibition of stain formation caused by infusion of black tea in vitro. Subsequently, the effect of SFG formulated with different levels of SHMP was determined using a laboratory chewing apparatus to establish effective dosage of SHMP. Stain levels in both tests were assessed by colorimetry to determine L*, a*, b* values. Finally, a 12-week rand

BACKGROUND: Postoperative ileus is common after surgery. One non-pharmacological intervention that has shown promising results in reducing the duration of postoperative ileus is chewing gum after surgery. However, this has not been investigated in upper gastrointestinal surgery such as pancreatic surgery. Hence the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of chewing gum treatment on patients undergoing pancreaticoduodenectomy ad modum whipple due to pancreatic or periampullary cancer.
METHODS: This study was conducted as a phase III trial that was terminated early. Patients diagnosed

Gum-chewing has been suggested as a method to stimulate bowel motility and shorten postoperative ileus after colorectal surgery. Patients chewing gum pass flatus, and have bowel movement, earlier than those having ordinary postoperative treatment, and have a lower incidence of postoperative complications. The mechanisms suggested in order to explain this phenomena are all centered in the action of chewing, that may act on cephalic-vagal stimulation of digestion, producing hormones associated with bowel motility, or as sham feeding, stimulating the motility of the duodenum, stomach, and rectum,

Published research indicates that regular use of toothpaste containing sodium bicarbonate is effective in reducing volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) and oral malodor. Gaffar initially reported on the use of sodium bicarbonate as an agent to affect VSCs, indicating that sodium bicarbonate had the potential to alter the VSCs to nonvolatile compounds. Chewing gum would also be suspected of providing benefits in controlling oral malodor through its claimed ability to mechanically aid in the removal of dental plaque. Based on the length of chewing time, the opportunity exists for chewing gum to reac

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Xerostomia is frequently reported after radiotherapy (RT) for head and neck cancer (HNC). The aim of this study was to reduce symptoms of radiation-induced xerostomia in HNC survivors, in which the experimental arm used chewing gum for a month. Primary endpoint was changes in scoring of dry mouth as defined by EORTC QLQ-H&N35 between arms.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Participants with any grade of physician-assessed xerostomia, ≥ six month after RT, disease-free and able to chew gum were, for a month, randomized (2:1) to: (Arm A) daily chewing gum or (Arm B) standard care.

BACKGROUND: Chewing gum may stimulate gastrointestinal motility, with beneficial effects on postoperative ileus suggested in small studies. The primary aim of this trial was to determine whether chewing gum reduces length of hospital stay (LOS) after colorectal resection. Secondary aims included examining bowel habit symptoms, complications and healthcare costs.
METHODS: This clinical trial allocated patients randomly to standard postoperative care with or without chewing gum (sugar-free gum for at least 10 min, four times per day on days 1-5) in five UK hospitals. The primary outcome was LOS

BACKGROUND: Insufficient fasting prior to endoscopic procedures performed under sedation may result in potential aspiration of gastric contents. Fasting as per ASA guidelines is recommended prior to these procedures. However, the effect of chewing gum on fasting status has been a subject of debate and often leads to procedural delays.
OBJECTIVE: Evaluation of the effect of chewing gum on the gastric volume and pH.
METHODS: In this randomized controlled prospective observer blinded trail, ASA I-III patients aged more than 18 years scheduled for esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) or a combined E

The proposition that chewing gum can improve alertness was investigated via both physiological and self-rated measures. The Pupillographic Sleepiness Test (PST) provided a measure of pupillary unrest (PUI); a physiological index of daytime sleepiness. Chewing gum reduced the extent of sleepiness as measured by both PUI and self-rated sleepiness. Specifically, in comparison with sham chewing and no chewing controls, the chewing gum condition significantly limited the increase in pupillary unrest following the 11-minute PST within a darkened laboratory: a finding indicating moderation of the day

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of sugar-free and sugar-containing gums on plaque formation, established plaque and salivary debris. Plaque accumulating during three 5-day periods was recorded in a group of 10 students who, in the absence of normal oral hygiene methods, chewed sugar-free or sugar-containing chewing gum or did not chew gum. In a second group of 10 students the effect of chewing the two types of gum on 3-day accumulations of plaque was recorded. Finally, the wet weight of liquorice debris present in saliva with and without gum chewing, was recorded. During the

INTRODUCTION: Chewing gum is a widespread, seemingly mundane behaviour that has been linked to diverse benefits such as improved cognitive performance, reduced stress, and enhanced alertness. While animal and human research indicate that mastication engages extensive sensorimotor networks and may also modulate higher-order cognitive and emotional processes, questions remain about the specific neural mechanisms involved. This review combines findings from neuroimaging studies-including fMRI, fNIRS, and EEG-that investigate how chewing gum alters brain activity in humans.
METHODS: Using a targe

This pharmacokinetic study evaluated diphenhydramine in the plasma of healthy volunteers after a single 25 mg oral dose of dimenhydrinate (diphenhydramine theophyllinate), corresponding to 12.7 mg diphenhydramine, in a chewing gum formulation. Seven volunteers (4 men, 3 women; age: 26.3 +/- 1.2 years; body weight: 63.1 +/- 4.1 kg; height: 172.4 +/- 4.6 cm) chewed the gum for 1 h. Blood samples (10 ml) were collected at different time intervals up to 24 h. Blood plasma was subsequently processed and analyzed for diphenhydramine content using a GLC method and an NPD detector. Analytical data rev

Dental hypersensitivity has been observed in an increasing number of younger patients over the past few decades. The reasons for this include forced or false tooth-brushing techniques, and abrasions caused by bruxism or orthodontic procedures. The aim of the present study was to assess the possible benefits of a potassium chloride (KCl) containing chewing gum in dental hypersensitivity. The study population consisted of 59 selected university students (age: 25 +/- 4.4 years). Each subject suitable for entry into the study had more than 3 teeth sensitive to thermal stimulation (air stimulus ran
