AIMS: To evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of a phone-based parent-to-parent support program, in which parents who have had children with substance use problems provided support and guidance to other parents seeking help about their child's substance misuse.
METHOD: 228 parents completed a 2.5-day coach workshop and 6-months of ongoing training and support in the Invitation to Change Approach (ITC), a program blending evidence-based strategies for addressing substance use disorders. Trained parent coaches provided support and guidance to 278 parents for up to 8 weeks. We evaluated th

Clinicians often identify parent-child relationships that are believed to be problematic for the child's future emotional growth, yet there are minimal outcome data on which to base anticipatory guidance. This 2-year follow-up study examined the stability and child behavioral correlates of parental perceptions of increased child vulnerability and parental overprotection. Of 192 potential participants, 114 parents (93% mothers, 86% white, 75% married, 90% middle-upper socioeconomic status) with children age 4 to 7 years successfully completed the Parent Protection Scale, Child Vulnerability Sca

With a limited number of child and adolescent psychiatrists available to see youth patients, many common psychiatric problems in youth are managed by other providers. Clinical pearls from experts in child and adolescent psychiatry can help general practitioners with this management. Some common issues are discussed here for which practical guidance is offered, ranging from approaches to assessment and how to start and titrate medications for the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, depression, and sleep problems.

OBJECTIVE: Psychological maltreatment (PM) is a widespread form of child maltreatment both in high-risk and maltreating families as well as in the general population of parents, yet there are no intervention programs that target it directly. The current study was designed as the first step in a larger program of research concerning educating parents about PM. In this study we evaluated the content of universal parenting programs to assess whether they include content on PM. Three questions were addressed: (1) Which types, if any, of PM were included in the content of these programs? (2) Which

Trichotillomania, though uncommon, is one of the causes of unexplained hair loss, especially in children. Three girls in the age group of 4-6 years were observed in our pediatric dermatology clinic to have trichotillomania. In one child, there was co-existent alopecia areata. All were referred to the child guidance clinic and they all showed improvement with behavior therapy. A close liasion between the dermatologist, psychiatrist and parents would go a long way in preventing this alopecia

The differential diagnostic work-up of (early) infantile nystagmus depends largely on the presence of syndromic or neurological abnormalities, in addition to the child's age and ocular findings. In some cases, a careful medical history and physical examination alone are sufficient to establish a diagnosis. Electrophysiology, imaging, molecular genetics and metabolic diagnostics are further essential components of the neuropediatric part of the problem analysis. This paper aims to provide guidance on how to proceed in a way that is as efficient as possible and as gentle as possible on the child

This article is a review of the literature on the experiences of parents and their interactions with healthcare providers while caring for their technology-dependent child(ren) in their homes. Results are presented in the following themes: information needs, respect and partnership with healthcare providers, care coordination, and experiences with home healthcare nurses. Parents needed information and guidance and felt supported when providers recognized parents' expertise with the child's care, and offered reassurance and confirmation about their practices. Home healthcare clinicians provided

BACKGROUND: Rectal foreign body refers to any object that enters the colon and rectum through the mouth or anus, becomes impacted, and cannot be expelled spontaneously. Foreign bodies in the pediatric gastrointestinal tract are relatively common in pediatric emergency departments; most of which are coins, fruit pits, button batteries, magnets, and toy parts ingested orally. Rectal foreign bodies in children are rare.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a rare case of a preschool child who experienced two episodes of rectal foreign body within one year. Through a retrospective analysis of the child's

INTRODUCTION: Child abuse in Africa is a major threat to the achievement of the sustainable development goals on the continent and has become increasingly topical with a dramatic increase in recognition and an appreciation of the long term harmful effects on the affected population. The aim of this review was to outline current management of child abuse (especially sexual abuse) and highlight current preventive practice that could be beneficial in a resource-limited environment.
METHODS: A search of Medline and reference lists of the literature on child abuse in African countries and relevant

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate dietary intake impact outcomes up to 3.5 years after the NOURISH early feeding intervention (concealed allocation, assessor masked randomized controlled trial).
METHODS: In this study, 698 first-time mothers with healthy term infants were allocated to receive anticipatory guidance on protective feeding practices or usual care. Outcomes were assessed at 2, 3.7, and 5 years (3.5 years post-intervention). Dietary intake was assessed by 24-h recall and Child Dietary Questionnaire. Mothers completed a food preference questionnaire and Children's Eating Behavior Questionnaire

This study examined the development of autobiographical memory specificity (AMS) in a longitudinal randomized controlled trial of 242 maltreated and nonmaltreated children (aged 36-86 months; 50.4% male; 39.7% Black, 25.9% White, 34.5% Latinx/other) and their mothers. Half of the maltreated families were randomized to receive an intervention to improve maternal reminiscing. The effects of maltreatment and the intervention on children's AMS via two indices of maternal reminiscing, sensitive guidance, and elaboration, were evaluated. Bidirectional associations between AMS and child maladjustment

This article reviews the physiology of cerebrospinal fluid formation and flow, the causes of hydrocephalus in the pediatric patient, symptoms of increased intracranial pressure, recent advances in shunt technology, the medical and surgical management of hydrocephalus, and potential complications of ventricular shunting devices. Nursing care in the post-operative period and for the child with shunt malfunction is discussed, as well as the long-term management needs and anticipatory guidance issues as related to a child with a ventricular shunting device. The visible evidence of child physical abuse most often is minimal or nonexistent, and the children at greatest risk of becoming victims are those too young to verbalize the history. As pediatric clinicians, we must be able to recognize potential sequelae of abuse and the high-risk situations that lead to physical abuse; we also must acknowledge that victims of child physical abuse often have injuries at multiple locations and in multiple organ systems. As a routine part of pediatric practice, healthcare providers, through anticipatory guidance, try to maximize the child's safety in the home e

Passive immobilisation is regarded as able to potentially cause physical distress and intense anxiety manifestations. The study aims to investigate the physiological variations of children with special health care needs while using a Papoose board and a combination of basic behaviour guidance during dental treatment. This is a randomised crossover trial involving 90 children with special health care needs receiving standard dental care with two methods of behaviour guidance sequentially. Exposure A is a combination of tell-show-do, distraction, and positive reinforcement, while exposure B is p

AIM: The incidence of caries in children is closely related to daily habits and may also be influenced markedly by a mother's attitude to child-care. For example, if a mother has a mental health problem such as child-care anxiety, this may prevent her obtaining advice on the daily health requirements of her children including the need to brush the teeth regularly. It is therefore important that mothers receive guidance in order to minimize the incidence of caries. This study examined the effect of child-care anxiety in mothers on the prevalence of caries in 3-year-old children.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary hypoperfusion is common in children with congenital heart diseases (CHDs) or pulmonary hypertension (PH) and causes adult pulmonary dysplasia. Systematic reviews have shown that some children with CHDs or PH have mitigated clinical outcomes with COVID-19. Understanding the effects of pulmonary hypoperfusion on postnatal alveolar development may aid in the development of methods to improve the pulmonary function of children with CHDs or PH and improve their care during the COVID-19 pandemic, which is characterized by cytokine storm and persistent inflammation.

Parental Presence (PP) and Non-violent Resistance (NVR) are the core concepts to describe an approach in counselling helpless parents of children with behavioral disorders. Basically PP means the presence of the parents in the life of their child. It can get lost when escalating conflicts so much become part of the everyday life of the family that these processes can't be handled constructively any more. The escalation then follows either a pattern of complementarity--the readiness of the parents to easily give in, or a symmetric pattern of increasing mutual hostility. Parents then often withd

This study investigated inadequate parent-child relationships, problems with regard to sexuality, and substance abuse among African university students. They reported experiencing positive aspects of the parent-child relationship, such as acceptance, love, understanding, encouragement, and guidance, as well as negative aspects, including inadequate communication and parents' authoritarian attitudes. Numerous sexual issues and the abuse of alcohol and other drugs were perceived as serious problems among teenagers in general. Although an inadequate parent-child relationship appears to contribute

Pediatricians spend a substantial part of patients' visits counseling on development and behavior. In many cases, the root of behavioral challenges is the relationship between the child and their caregiver. Pediatricians need to know the signs of unhealthy relationship patterns that indicate the need for more resources other than the usual anticipatory guidance. This article reviews the attachment patterns that a child can form with their caregiver, detailing the characteristics of secure and insecure relationships. This article also describes the conditions in which a disorder of attachment o
