27 patients (28 cases), were treated for perilunate dislocations in 20 and fracture-dislocations in 8. Capitate displacement was dorsal in 27 cases and palmar in 1 case, and in 16, the scaphoid was fractured. There was no substantial delay of treatment. In 8 patients treated with closed reduction, follow-up averaged 6 (1-15) years. 19 patients (20 cases) who underwent early open reduction with K-wire stabilization and ligamentous repair, had an average follow-up of 2 (0.5-7) years. The clinical outcome was evaluated using a scoring system based on pain, occupation, ROM and grip strength, while

Management of a dislocated ankle fracture can be challenging because of instability of the ankle mortise, a compromised soft tissue envelope, and the potential neurovascular compromise. Every effort should be made to quickly and efficiently relocate the disrupted ankle joint. Within the emergency department setting, narcotics and benzodiazepines can be used to sedate the patient before attempting closed reduction. The combination of narcotics and benzodiazepines provides relief of pain and muscle guarding; however, it conveys a risk of seizure as well as respiratory arrest. An alternative to c

Colles' fracture is a distal radius injury, with dorsal tilt of the distal radial fracture fragment. Its typical treatment involves reduction and plaster cast immobilization to restore its anatomical position. Sometimes, reduction maneuver may be difficult with poor outcomes, requiring repeated reduction maneuvers or eventual surgical treatment. The author proposes a simple, easy, and reliable manual reduction technique.

We retrospectively reviewed the results of closed treatment in 7 patients with acute locked posterior fracture-dislocations of the shoulder. Shoulders were reduced with patients under general anesthesia and were splinted in neutral rotation for 6 weeks. Follow-up averaged 46 months (range, 24-88 months). All shoulders were reduced within 14 days. Humeral head defects ranged from 18% to 32% of the articular surface, and all patients had documented posterior instability under anesthesia after relocation. Of the 7 patients, 6 had a stable shoulder. The mean American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons sh

We treated 22 children with a supracondylar fracture of the humerus and an ipsilateral fracture of the forearm by closed reduction and percutaneous fixation. There were four Gartland type-II and 18 Gartland type-III supracondylar fractures of the humerus. There were fractures of both bones of the forearm in 16 and of the radius in six. Both the supracondylar and the distal forearm fractures were treated by closed reduction and percutaneous fixation. The mean follow-up time was 38.6 months. At the latest follow-up there were 21 excellent or good results and one fair result. There were no cases

BACKGROUND: Subcapital femoral neck fracture in young adults has many complications, and the incidence is increasing year-by-year. The selection of the proper operation method to avoid them is an ambiguous matter. This study aimed to evaluate the treatment effect of subcapital femoral neck fracture by the capsulotomy and internal fixation with iliac bone grafting or closed reduction and internal fixation in young adults.
METHODS: From March 2003 to February 2010, 65 young patients with subcapital femoral neck fractures were treated, including 39 males and 26 females with average age of 34.5 y

BACKGROUND: A meta-analysis was performed to assess the association between healing rate, avascular necrosis (AVN) of femoral head and two reductions-open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) and closed reduction internal fixation (CRIF) for femoral neck fracture.
METHODS: A literature-based search was conducted to identify all relevant studies published before September 10, 2013. The odd ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were used for estimating the effects of the two reduction methods. Data were independently extracted by two investigators who reached a consensus on all of the items

This retrospective study was performed to understand the clinical results after closed reduction and open reduction in 35 children (mean age 6.4 years) with completely displaced supracondylar fractures of the distal humerus between 1996 and 2000. Closed reduction (21 cases) was attempted, with open reduction (14 cases) indicated in irreducible cases with or without severe swelling. After an average follow-up of 22 months, according to Flynn's criteria, the results were excellent in 18, good in 12, fair in 2, and poor in 3. The satisfactory results rates were similar for closed and open reducti

OBJECTIVE: Surgical technique of closed reduction followed by percutaneous fixation of acute femoral neck fractures.
INDICATIONS: Displaced femoral neck fractures.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: Open femoral neck fractures and concomitant neurovascular injuries.
SURGICAL TECHNIQUE: The patient is positioned supine on a traction table, ensuring optimal fluoroscopic visualization. Closed reduction is attempted before draping to assess reducibility. Gentle axial traction restores length and valgus alignment, followed by internal rotation to correct anterior angulation and restore alignment, guided by the

BACKGROUND: The described technique is useful for achieving closed reduction of severely displaced (i.e., Judet Type-III and IV) pediatric radial neck fractures. It is widely agreed that radial neck fractures with angulation of >30° should be reduced. Various maneuvers have been described, but none uniformly achieves complete reduction in severely displaced radial neck fractures (Types III and IV)1-4. The aim of the present technique is to achieve closed reduction in these severely displaced radial neck fractures without surgical instrumentation.
DESCRIPTION: A stepwise approach is described.

BACKGROUND: The use of simulators in medical education is critical for developing procedural competence prior to treating patients. Current training of emergency physicians to perform distal radius fracture reduction is inconsistent and inadequate.
APPROACH: We developed a 3D printed distal radius fracture simulation training model that is easy to assemble and relatively inexpensive. We present step-by-step instructions to reproduce the model.
EVALUATION: The model was found to have high fidelity for training by both instructors and participants in a simulation-based mastery learning course.

Distal radius fractures are one of the most common orthopedic injuries. After history, physical examination, and diagnostic imaging, treatment begins with closed reduction and immobilization to restore an upper extremity that has both acceptable alignment and stability. Whether for definitive nonoperative management or in preparation for surgical fixation, it is important to understand the principles of closed reduction and immobilization. This article presents a brief review of indications and a technical guide to successful closed reduction and casting for the orthopedic surgeon.

OBJECTIVE: To report the case of a 42-year-old woman with a nasal bone fracture that was easily treated using a surgical navigation system.
METHODS: In this clinical report, the authors suggest that intraoperative surgical navigation systems are useful diagnostically and for localizing sites of nasal bone fractures exactly.
RESULTS: The patient underwent successful closed reduction of the nasal bone fracture.
CONCLUSIONS: Surgical navigation is a useful tool for identifying nasal bone fracture locations and for guiding closed reduction. Surgical navigation is recommended when nasal bone fra
