Insertion of a sound amplification device into the round window niche (extracochlear implant) or into the coils of the cochlea (intracochlear implant) can give significant benefits to some carefully selected, severely deaf patients. Imaging has an essential role in selective and pre-operative assessment. Severe otosclerosis and post-meningitic labyrinthitis ossificans are common causes of deafness in these patients and can be demonstrated by computed tomography (CT). The most suitable side for operation can be assessed. We describe our experiences with 165 patients, 69 of whom were found suita

Cochlear implants (CIs) have demonstrated a clear functional benefit in children with severe-to-profound sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) and thus have gained wide acceptance for treating deafness in the pediatric population. When evaluating young children for cochlear implantation, there are unique considerations beyond the standard issues addressed during surgery in adults. Because of advances in genetic testing, imaging resolution, CI technology, post-implant rehabilitation, and other factors, issues related to CI surgery in children continue to evolve. Such factors have led to changes in

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Pediatric cochlear implantation has evolved considerably over the past three decades to include more patients at earlier ages with greater degrees of residual hearing. As an extension, a significant focus of research over the past decade has surrounded preservation of existing acoustic hearing.
RECENT FINDINGS: Multiple studies published within the last 5 years demonstrate aidable acoustic hearing preservation in 60-90% of pediatric patients, with 40-60% experiencing complete hearing preservation following cochlear implantation. Durability of preserved hearing varies among

HYPOTHESIS: Transmodiolar auditory implantation via the middle ear cavity could be possible using an augmented reality system (ARS).
BACKGROUND: There is no clear landmark to indicate the cochlear apex or the modiolar axis. The ARS seems to be a promising tool for transmodiolar implantation by combining information from the preprocedure computed tomography scan (CT-scan) images to the real-time video of the surgical field.
METHODS: Eight human temporal bone resin models were included (five adults and three children). The procedure started by the identification of the modiolar axis on the pre

PURPOSE: The advent of cochlear implantation has been followed by an explosion in surgical and technological advances with subsequent alterations in the treatment of sensorineural hearing loss management. Many individuals with rare genetic abnormalities who once may have not been considered candidates for cochlear implantation are now benefiting from cochlear implantation. One of these unusual syndromes is the 13q deletion syndrome. The clinical features of 13q deletion syndrome, a rare chromosomal abnormality, were originally described in the early 1960s, though the literature currently lacks

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Over the last decade, the selection criteria for cochlear implantation have expanded to include children with special auditory, otologic, and medical problems. Included within this expanded group of candidates are those children with auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder, cochleovestibular malformations, cochlear nerve deficiency, associated syndromes, as well as multiple medical and developmental disorders. Definitive indications for cochlear implantation in these unique pediatric populations are in evolution. This review will provide an overview of managing and habilitatin

OBJECTIVES: The chorda tympani nerve (CTN) is at risk of damage during cochlear implantation, especially during posterior tympanotomy. The aim of this study was, therefore, to elicit the risk of taste disorders following cochlear implantation surgery involving a mastoidectomy and a posterior tympanotomy approach.
METHOD: Twenty-six patients underwent a taste test before, 3 days after, and 6 weeks after cochlear implantation surgery. The taste sensations - sweet, sour, salt and bitter - were determined. Patients' self-ratings of taste function were also obtained. In addition, the surgeons prov

OBJECTIVES: We describe our experience of intraoperative and postoperative complications of cochlear implantation in an adult population.
METHODS: Between April 1986 and June 2010, the senior author (A.S.) performed 449 cochlear implantations in two different institutions. Of these, 212 implantations were in adults. The operative techniques were similar in all cases.
RESULTS: Complications were observed in 12 of the 212 adult cases (5.7%), of which 10 were major (4.7%) and 2 minor (1%). In 7 cases, reimplantation was necessitated by device failure (6 cases; 2.8%) or device extrusion (1 case;

BACKGROUND: Cochlear implantation has been used to rehabilitate profoundly deafened adults for more than 25 years. However, surgical labyrinthectomy is often considered a contraindication to cochlear implantation, especially if there is a significant delay between the two procedures. As the role of cochlear implantation continues to expand, this idea requires reconsideration.
CASE REPORT: A 59-year-old woman presented to our clinic after undergoing bilateral surgical labyrinthectomies for intractable Ménière's disease 21 years prior. Despite the significant time delay, she underwent cochlear

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Donnai-Barrow syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive disorder associated with severe sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). Several ocular abnormalities have also been described in this syndrome, including hypertelorism, down-slanting palpebral fissures, myopia and retinal detachment. The condition is also associated with diaphragmatic hernia, exomphalos, absent corpus callosum and developmental delay. We describe the first recorded case of cochlear implantation in this rare disorder.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: This case of Donnai-Barrow syndrome was identified from our paed

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Medulloblastoma is the most common pediatric malignant tumor of the central nervous system in children. Treatment includes surgical excision, external beam radiation, and multiagent chemotherapy. Otologic sequelae are common and may result from radiation and/or chemotherapy. Profound sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is a known complication of neuro-oncologic treatment and may render these patients eligible for cochlear implantation (CI). Issues of CI in this population, including diagnosis, treatment of preoperative middle ear disease, operative and postoperative course

CONCLUSIONS: We observed 4 cases of paroxysmal positional vertigo (PPV) among 62 cochlear implant (CI) recipients. They occurred in the implanted ear without chronological relation with the surgical procedure or the implant's activation. All of them relapsed within 3 months after an initially successful repositioning maneuver, and finally recovered after the second one. None of the patients showed labyrinthine weakness in the implanted ear. The outbreak of PPV did not affect the patients' speech perception performances.
OBJECTIVES: To report and discuss the occurrence of PPV after cochlear im
