Reflective intelligence: A neuroscience-informed framework for purpose and belonging.

BACKGROUND: Reflection is central to learning and moral development, yet the psychological and neural processes that support it are often examined separately rather than as an integrated system. As a result, educators frequently rely on reflection without a clear understanding of how it contributes to purpose and belonging. OBJECTIVE: This paper develops the Reflective Intelligence framework, which synthesizes research from neuroscience, psychology, and education to explain how reflection supports meaning-making and value-aligned action. APPROACH: The framework integrates evidence on three l

The involvement of the human prefrontal cortex in the emergence of visual awareness.

Exploring the neural mechanisms of awareness is a fundamental task of cognitive neuroscience. There is an ongoing dispute regarding the role of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) in the emergence of awareness, which is partially raised by the confound between report- and awareness-related activity. To address this problem, we designed a visual awareness task that can minimize report-related motor confounding. Our results show that saccadic latency is significantly shorter in the aware trials than in the unaware trials. Local field potential (LFP) data from six patients consistently show early (200-30

Ultra-high resolution imaging of laminar thickness in face-selective cortex in autism.

Gray matter cortical thickness (CT) is related to perceptual abilities. The fusiform face area (FFA) (Kanwisher et al., The Journal of Neuroscience: The Official Journal of the Society for Neuroscience, 17, 4302-4311, 1997) in the inferior temporal lobe is defined by its face selectivity, and the CT of the FFA correlates with the ability to make difficult visual decisions (Bi et al., Current Biology, 24, 222-227, 2014; McGugin et al., Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience, 28, 282-294, 2016, Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience, 32, 1316-1329, 2020). Integrating predictive frameworks and cognitive models of face perception.

The idea of a "predictive brain"-that is, the interpretation of internal and external information based on prior expectations-has been elaborated intensely over the past decade. Several domains in cognitive neuroscience have embraced this idea, including studies in perception, motor control, language, and affective, social, and clinical neuroscience. Despite the various studies that have used face stimuli to address questions related to predictive processing, there has been surprisingly little connection between this work and established cognitive models of face recognition. Here we suggest th

A neurobiological approach to the cognitive deficits of psychiatric disorders.

Deficits in brain networks that support cognitive regulatory functions are prevalent in many psychiatric disorders. Findings across neuropsychology and neuroimaging point to broad-based impairments that cross traditional diagnostic boundaries. These dysfunctions are largely separate from the classical symptoms of the disorders, and manifest in regulatory problems in both traditional cognitive and emotional domains. As such, they relate to the capacity of patients to engage effectively in their daily lives and activity, often persist even in the face of symptomatically effective treatment, and

Looking at eye gaze processing and its neural correlates in infancy-implications for social development and autism spectrum disorder.

The importance of eye gaze as a means of communication is indisputable. However, there is debate about whether there is a dedicated neural module, which functions as an eye gaze detector and when infants are able to use eye gaze cues in a referential way. The application of neuroscience methodologies to developmental psychology has provided new insights into early social cognitive development. This review integrates findings on the development of eye gaze processing with research on the neural mechanisms underlying infant and adult social cognition. This research shows how a cognitive neurosci

The cognitive and neural bases of creative thought: A cross-domain systematic review and meta-analysis of transcranial direct current stimulation studies.

Creative thought enables humans to flexibly generate, evaluate and select novel and adaptive ideas across different contexts. Decades of research indicates that it involves two key aspects: retrieval of previously acquired knowledge and manipulation of that knowledge. However, the cognitive processes underpinning these aspects remain underspecified. The broader clinical-cognitive neuroscience literature suggests these functions rely on general-purpose cognitive mechanisms supporting semantic cognition, controlled episodic memory retrieval, and executive mechanisms. Transcranial direct current

Single-trial visually evoked potentials predict both individual choice and market outcomes.

A central assumption in the behavioral sciences is that choice behavior generalizes enough across individuals that measurements from a sampled group can predict the behavior of the population. Following from this assumption, the unit of behavioral sampling or measurement for most neuroimaging studies is the individual; however, cognitive neuroscience is increasingly acknowledging a dissociation between neural activity that predicts individual behavior and that which predicts the average or aggregate behavior of the population suggesting a greater importance of individual differences than is ty

Modelling meaning composition from formalism to mechanism.

Human thought and language have extraordinary expressive power because meaningful parts can be assembled into more complex semantic structures. This partly underlies our ability to compose meanings into endlessly novel configurations, and sets us apart from other species and current computing devices. Crucially, human behaviour, including language use and linguistic data, indicates that composing parts into complex structures does not threaten the existence of constituent parts as independent units in the system: parts and wholes exist simultaneously yet independently from one another in the m

Connections between mechanisms for anosognosia and implicit memory.

Mograbi and Morris review work highlighting an interesting phenomenon whereby individuals are explicitly anosognosic for their deficits despite intact expression of implicit awareness. Parallels exist between this phenomenon and recent cognitive neuroscience findings demonstrating intact memory test performance despite unawareness of performance. We discuss these parallels with regard to the proposed CAM model. Given that it is possible to investigate the neurological underpinnings of explicit and implicit processing in memory tasks, methods from cognitive neuroscience may offer substantial in

Compositionality in a Parallel Architecture for Language Processing.

Compositionality has been a central concept in linguistics and philosophy for decades, and it is increasingly prominent in many other areas of cognitive science. Its status, however, remains contentious. Here, I reassess the nature and scope of the principle of compositionality (Partee, 1995) from the perspective of psycholinguistics and cognitive neuroscience. First, I review classic arguments for compositionality and conclude that they fail to establish compositionality as a property of human language. Next, I state a new competence argument, acknowledging the fact that any competent user of

Toward an evolutionary and syndromic psychiatry: Dogs as a comparative model for the neuroscience of psychopathology.

Psychiatric disorders arise from dysfunctions of neural systems that are deeply conserved across mammals, yet contemporary psychiatric classification remains fundamentally anthropocentric, relying heavily on subjective experience, symbolic language and self-report. This creates a major challenge for veterinarian psychiatrists and for comparative neuroscience: how can psychopathology be characterized across species when introspective access is unavailable? The domestic dog provides a uniquely powerful model for addressing this question, combining conserved affective and cognitive neural circuit

How culture shapes social cognition deficits in mental disorders: A review.

Social cognitive skills are indispensable for successful communication with others. Substantial research has determined deficits in these abilities in patients with mental disorders. In neurobiological development and continuing into adulthood, cross-cultural differences in social cognition have been demonstrated. Moreover, symptomatic patterns in mental disorders may vary according to the cultural background of an individual. Cross-cultural studies can thus help in understanding underlying (biological) mechanisms and factors that influence behavior in health and disease. In addition, studies

A standardized naturalistic audio stimulus dataset with unsupervised labeling.

This study presents a standardized naturalistic audio stimulus dataset designed for use in trial-wise cognitive neuroscience, neuroimaging, and behavioral research. The dataset provides short, recognizable auditory stimuli that are normed for emotional valence and startlingness. To create such a dataset, the current study collected 291 audio files from a range of sources and standardized them to a duration of 1.5 s. A final sample of 361 participants rated the audio clips on emotional valence, startlingness, and recognizability, and subsequently freely described the audios by typing what they

Finite case series or infinite single-case studies? Comments on "Case series investigations in cognitive neuropsychology" by Schwartz and Dell (2010).

In this commentary, though acknowledging that a case-series approach in neuropsychology is not always possible, we set out a series of considerations that in our view make this approach generally superior to single-case study. We argue that case-series designs are crucial for theory-testing, assessment of computational models, evaluation of inter-patient variation (including selection criteria, patient homogeneity/heterogeneity, premorbid individual differences, etc.) and to establish solid foundations for the interpretation of behavioural dissociations and associations. We conclude by suggest

Getting blood from a stone: Improving brain-behavior inferences without brain data.

In recent years, the cognitive neuroscience literature has come under criticism for containing many low-powered studies, limiting the ability to make reliable statistical inferences. Typically, the suggestion for increasing power is to collect more data with neural signals. However, many studies in cognitive neuroscience use parameters estimated from behavioral data in order to make inferences about neural signals (such as fMRI BOLD signal). In this paper, we explore how cognitive neuroscientists can learn more about their neuroimaging signal by collecting data on behavior alone and using alte

FOUR APPROACHES TO THE UNCONSCIOUS.

BACKGROUND: The concept of the unconscious has evolved across disciplines, originating in philosophy, hypnosis, and psychoanalysis, and later redefined through modern neuroscience and cognitive science. Whereas early models primarily regarded it as a repository of repressed content, contemporary perspectives emphasize its adaptive, dynamic, multi-layered, and often non-pathological functions. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: This article provides a conceptual review of four major frameworks - psychoanalysis, Ericksonian hypnosis, cognitive sciences, and neuroscience. Through comparative analysis, it exa
