Cognitive Mechanisms in Chronic Tinnitus: Psychological Markers of a Failure to Switch Attention.

The cognitive mechanisms underpinning chronic tinnitus (CT; phantom auditory perceptions) are underexplored but may reflect a failure to switch attention away from a tinnitus sound. Here, we investigated a range of components that influence the ability to switch attention, including cognitive control, inhibition, working memory and mood, on the presence and severity of CT. Our participants with tinnitus showed significant impairments in cognitive control and inhibition as well as lower levels of emotional well-being, compared to healthy-hearing participants. Moreover, the subjective cognitive

Dysfunctional cognitions and adult psychological functioning in child sexual abuse survivors.

Two studies explored the relationship between cognitions and long-term symptoms in adult child sexual abuse (CSA) survivors. In Study 1, an American sample of 43 survivors completed questionnaires assessing attributional style and dysfunctional beliefs in cognitive themes affected by victimization, as well as measures of posttraumatic symptoms. Survivors' attributions of negative events were more internal, stable, and global than those of 29 comparison subjects without a history of CSA. However, only the globality scale was significantly related with severity of long-term symptoms. High correl

PsicoCare: a pilot randomized controlled trial testing a psychological intervention combining cognitive-behavioral treatment and positive psychology therapy in acute coronary syndrome patients.

BACKGROUND: Although psychological factors play a significant role in the onset and prognosis of acute coronary syndrome (ACS), psychological interventions (PIs) are rarely included in cardiac rehabilitation (CR) programs due to inconclusive evidence regarding specific intervention components and effect sizes. This study aimed to assess the efficacy of a PI based on cognitive-behavioral treatment (CBT) and positive psychology therapy (PPT) in improving psychological and clinical outcomes in patients with ACS. METHODS: This PsicoCare trial was an open-label randomized controlled trial that com

Demographic, psychological, behavioral, and cognitive correlates of BMI in youth: Findings from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has implicated demographic, psychological, behavioral, and cognitive variables in the onset and maintenance of pediatric overweight/obesity. No adequately-powered study has simultaneously modeled these variables to assess their relative associations with body mass index (BMI; kg/m2) in a nationally representative sample of youth. METHODS: Multiple machine learning regression approaches were employed to estimate the relative importance of 43 demographic, psychological, behavioral, and cognitive variables previously associated with BMI in youth to elucidate the ass

Adverse life events and cognition in older adults: the role of gender and psychological resilience.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined gender differences in the association between stressful life events and late-life cognition, with psychological resilience as a potential moderating factor. METHODS: Longitudinal data were drawn from a population-based sample of 1,815 participants (Mage = 70.71, SDage = 1.50, 48% women). Stressful life events were indicated by both the number of recent life events in the past 6 months measured by the List of Threatening Events Questionnaire and lifetime traumatic experiences captured by questions from the Composite International Diagnostic Interview. Psychological and cognitive-emotional moderators of suicidal ideation and self-harm in young adults.

The risk for suicide has been conceptualized as a continuum from dysfunctional psychological and cognitive states to suicidal thoughts and behaviour. Little is known about risk and protective factors along the continuum. In the current study, we assessed ninety-four university students (36 individuals indicated suicidal ideation and 33 reported self-harm) for suicidality, depression, entrapment, defeat, hopelessness, mindfulness, self-compassion, and implicit associations with death/suicide. We used regression models and moderation analyses to test if mindfulness, self-compassion, and implicit

Optimizing immersive learning in crisis management: cognitive and psychological mechanisms of VR training.

BACKGROUND: Virtual Reality (VR) training holds significant promise for crisis education, yet the cognitive and psychological mechanisms through which it enhances higher-order decision-making skills remain inadequately explained. Grounded in Presence Theory and Cognitive Load Theory, this study investigates how VR training improves decision-making competence, examining the mediating role of immersion and the moderating effect of training duration. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 352 emergency response professionals from China, selected via stratified random sampling. Data

Physical, psychological, and cognitive function and quality of life in survivors of severe critical illness.

Survivors of critical illness frequently experience persistent physical, psychological, and cognitive impairments after intensive care unit (ICU) discharge, which may contribute to reduced quality of life. Previous studies have described these outcomes in heterogeneous ICU populations with variable illness severity and using non-uniform assessment approaches. We conducted a standardized, multimodal assessment with validated scales in a cohort of severely ill ICU patients. This prospective, single-centre observational study included 100 adults (median age 63 years; 69% male) who required invasi

Alexithymia and its relationship with cognition and psychological outcomes in patients with drug-resistant epilepsy.

INTRODUCTION: Drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) is associated with substantial cognitive and psychosocial burden. Alexithymia has been proposed as a relevant emotional processing deficit in epilepsy, but data in DRE are limited. This study examines alexithymia and its associations with cognition and psychological outcomes in patients with DRE. METHODS: Seventy-five patients with DRE underwent cognitive and psychological assessment. Alexithymia was assessed using the TAS-20 and affective symptoms using the DASS-42. A comprehensive neuropsychological battery was administered and composite scores fo

Psychological resilience as a behavioral proxy for cognitive reserve in multiple sclerosis: A theoretical reappraisal.

Psychological resilience has emerged as a robust protective factor in multiple sclerosis (MS), consistently associated with reduced depression, lower fear of relapse, and improved health-related quality of life. However, resilience in MS has been predominantly conceptualized as an intrapersonal psychological trait, limiting its explanatory scope for cognitive and neurological outcomes. In this theoretical manuscript, we propose reconceptualizing psychological resilience as a dynamic behavioral-psychological system that may function as a behavioral proxy for cognitive reserve. This proposal is

Untangling the tangled relationship between cognitive and psychological comorbidities in epilepsy: Bidirectionality and mediation.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive and psychological abnormalities are known to be frequently occurring complications of the epilepsies, but their patterns of co-occurrence, directions of effect, underlying mechanism(s), and causal pathways remain uncertain. The intent of this investigation was to advance understanding of these issues in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). METHODS: A total of 121 patients with TLE were administered a comprehensive neuropsychological battery, and symptoms of diverse psychological syndromes were assessed with a standardized psychological inventory. The cognitive and

Migraine Treatment Using Erenumab: Can Lead to a Cognitive and Psychological Qualitative Improvement?

Migraine is one of the most disabling disorders in the world, associated with poor quality of life. Migraine prevention strategies have increasingly evolved since monoclonal antibodies against the calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), or its receptor, were identified. CGRP is the ideal target of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs). In particular, erenumab is the mAb that has shown good therapeutic efficacy in reducing pain intensity and having high tolerability. In this study, we aimed to investigate the efficacy of erenumab on both cognitive performance and psychological well-being. This was a pil
